Chapter 4The Journey

696 Words
The sun barely peeked over the jagged peaks of Shadowclaw as Killian strode into the council chamber, where the scent of smoldering embers and damp stone filled the air. Warriors lined the walls, their presence a silent reminder that strength governed here. Seated before him were representatives of the Silver Fang pack, their expressions grim with urgency. Killian took his place at the head of the long wooden table, his silver eyes scanning the room. Lucas stood at his right, arms crossed over his chest, while the Silver Fang Beta, Magnus, met Killian’s gaze with forced calm. The tension between the two packs was palpable; they had never been allies, merely neighboring forces tolerating one another. Magnus cleared his throat. “Alpha Black, we appreciate you granting us this meeting.” “Speak,” Killian said simply, leaning back in his chair. “You wouldn’t have come here if it wasn’t a matter of life and death.” Magnus exchanged glances with the elder beside him before nodding. “You’re right. We need your help.” Killian raised an eyebrow, unimpressed. “Silver Fang never asks for help.” “This is different,” Magnus admitted, his voice lower now. “We seek something that is buried deep within the unclaimed lands. A treasure of great importance to our pack.” Killian narrowed his eyes. “Treasure?” Magnus hesitated for a moment before continuing, “A relic left behind by our ancestors - an artifact with power. We have reason to believe it’s hidden within the heart of the forest.” Killian’s expression remained unreadable. “And why would I risk my warriors to dig up the past for you?” Magnus clenched his fists, barely keeping his composure. “Because we don’t just suspect rogues are after it - we know they are. If it falls into the wrong hands, it won’t just be Silver Fang that suffers.” The room fell silent. Killian’s wolf stirred at the possibility of danger lurking beyond their borders. The forest was vast and unforgiving, and if rogues were desperate enough to seek out something buried for centuries, that meant trouble. Lucas leaned toward him. “If what they say is true, we could be facing more than just rogue attacks. If there’s power in that relic, it could shift the balance between packs.” Killian studied the Silver Fang wolves carefully before exhaling. “And what do I get in return?” Magnus didn’t hesitate. “An alliance. If we succeed, we stand together against any future rogue threats. Our warriors, our resources, at your command.” The offer was tempting, but Killian wasn’t one to be easily swayed. He had spent years keeping Shadowclaw independent, refusing to rely on outsiders. But a threat was a threat, and Killian was not foolish enough to ignore a danger that could reach his pack. He let the silence stretch, letting Magnus squirm before he finally spoke. “Fine. We leave at dawn.” A breath of relief passed through the Silver Fang members, though Killian could see the uncertainty in their eyes. They had gotten what they wanted, but they had no idea what they were truly walking into. The morning air was thick with tension as the warriors of Shadowclaw and Silver Fang gathered at the pack’s outskirts. The expedition was small - Killian, Lucas, Magnus, and a handful of their strongest fighters. Their mission was clear: enter the unclaimed lands, retrieve the relic, and return before anyone - or anything - stood in their way. Killian rode at the front of the group, his sharp gaze scanning the terrain as they moved into the dense, towering woods. The forest was ancient, its secrets buried beneath layers of moss and shadow. Even the birds seemed to hush as they ventured deeper, as if the trees themselves whispered warnings. Lucas pulled up beside him, voice low. “This doesn’t feel right.” Killian’s grip tightened on the reins. “It’s not.” Something was waiting for them in the heart of the forest. He could feel it in his bones. But they had no choice but to press forward.
