CHAPTER 5
We get out of the car,
"How's Jon doing?" Drew asks sounding genuinely concerned.
"He completely shattered his ankle, he's going to be on crutches for 8 weeks." I say sadly as we walk into The Hockey Hall of Fame. "Whoa," The sight of everything leaves me speechless.
"It's amazing!" Drew says.
"No kidding!" We walk up to the desk,
"Hello how may I help you?" the lady at the desk asks.
"Hello, may I have 2 adult tickets and 2 youth tickets?" Dad asks.
"Sure thing," she says typing some things into the computer, "that would be 70 dollars." Whoa, The Hockey Hall of Fame doesn't come cheap! Dad swipes his card and she stamps our hands.
"Thank you and enjoy The Hockey Hall of Fame."
"We should for how much we're paying." I mutter.
"Come on Angie lighten up!" Drew says as we walk down the hall.
There's so many cool things here! So many jerseys, pictures, papers, sticks you name it! All autographed by different famous hockey players. We take in everything until finally we get to the best part of The Hockey Hall of Fame. The Stanley Cup! Drew and me quickly run up to it leaving Mom and Dad way behind. Only one of the three is here right now.
"It's amazing," I say in awe. Drew tries to touch it.
"Don't touch it!" I say smacking his hand. "You’re not supposed to touch the Cup until you win it!"
"My dream is to one day hoist that Cup." Drew says softly. I love Drew to pieces but the odds of him going pro let alone winning the Cup is very slim.
"Your biggest concern right now should be getting back to Bantam Travel after taking a year off in Peewee." I tell him.
"That should be the last thing you’re worried about." Drew assures me, "Your worries should be starting your hockey career at age 14."
"Okay so I'm a little bit behind for playing on an organized team. But as far as work ethic and relationships I'm up to date on that." I tell him.
"Yeah your relationships are definitely up to speed." he says teasing me, "So what does your boyfriend s***h future teammate think about you playing anyways?"
"I honestly don't know, all he said that is if I wanted to do it I should go for it and he thinks it sounds amazing." Drew laughs,
"Sounds like an answer so you won't get mad at him." You know it's bad when your little brother can even pick up on that. I laugh nervously,
"Ha ha um yeah," Drew senses my unease and switches the topic.
"This is awesome!" He says pulling our attention back to the Stanley Cup. Mom and Dad come join us,
"Ah the good old Stanley Cup." Dad says putting his arm around Mom.
"Haven't you seen it before Dad?" I ask him.
"Yes, I have, before Drew was born and you and Grant were little like 13 years ago I went and saw the Stanley Cup final. It was already in Game 7." he says, "Grant was just wanting to learn to skate and you were crawling around just trying to keep up with him." I laugh,
"Seems like nothing's changed." I say as Dad smiles,
"Well you keep up easier now." Dad remarks.
"True,"
"Who won that year?" Drew asks.
"Dallas, they played the Buffalo." Dad tells us.
"Must have been exciting," I say fantasizing how that must have felt.
"It was, especially since Dallas is my team." Dad says.
"Too bad they haven't been able to win a Cup since 1999!" Drew taunts.
"Your precious Dead Wings aren't that great either. They haven't won since 2008!" I point out.
"Chicago hasn't won since 2010!" Drew reminds me.
"More recent than Detroit."
When it comes NHL teams everyone in my family has their favorites. My team's Chicago, Dad's is Dallas, Mom's is LA, Grant's team is Toronto, and Drew's is Detroit even though everyone in our family hates them and refers to them as the Dead Wings. Literally everyone in our family hates Detroit except for Drew. He had to be the odd one of the group.
"What time is it?" I ask Dad.
"Oh about 3:00," he answers.
"Seriously? We've been walking around for 3 and a half hours?" I ask.
"Yeah and I'm pretty sure we haven't even seen everything there is to see. Are you guys ready to go though?" Dad asks.
"Totally I'm starving!" Drew says.
"Alright let's go," Mom says heading towards the door. Just as we're about to go out our very own Southview Lions walk in.
"Hey Angie!" Alex says holding up his hand for a high five. I give him a high five,
"What's up Alex?" I ask.
"Not much, have you been getting updates on Jon?" he asks.
"Of course," I say feeling my phone buzz. Ironically, it's Jon. "Speaking of him," I say to Alex while answering the phone.
"Hey Jon,"
"Hey Angel, the surgery's over." he tells me sleepily.
"How did it go?" I ask.
"Painful, still is, but I'm on the way to recovery!" He says sounding positive.
"Do you have your cast yet?" I ask.
"Yeah, I'm already back in my hotel room chilling out." Jon says yawning.
"Oh nice, do they have you on any meds?" I ask.
"Just some to help with the pain, are you at the hotel by chance?" he asks.
"No, I'm actually at The Hockey Hall of Fame but we're about to leave." I say.
"Oh cool, well I'll let you go." he says yawning again. I laugh,
“Sounds like you need to sleep anyways.” Jon laughs too,
“Maybe, I’ll see you tonight Angel.”
"Later," Jon hangs up and Alex laughs,
"Um I think you're getting updates before we do."
"Could be," I say nervously wanting to dismiss the topic. Mom and Dad are talking to Grant and Drew is lingering around the door.
"You going to do stats with us tonight?" Alex asks.
"Um I don't know,"
"Well you should it could just help Jon feel better." Alex says teasing me. I start to smile,
"Whatever," I say looking at the ground. He must of notice my sudden smile because he started to tease me about that too.
"You’re smiling!" he taunts. I feel my cheeks reddening,
"Am not," I say a little bit defensively.
"Well if anything you’re blushing now." he says.
"No, I'm not it's just warm in here." I say taking off my hoodie.
"Sure, anyway how was the Hall of Fame?" he asks.
"Amazing! You'll absolutely love it!" I tell him. Mom and Dad come up,
"Ready to go?" Mom asks.
"Totally," I say glancing at Alex, he snickers.
"Good job in the game today Alex." Dad compliments.
"Oh, thank you Mr. Miller." Alex says.
"Well bye Alex," I say leaving.
"Later Angie,"
I walk to the doors with Mom and Dad.
"Well should we go get some lunch?" Mom asks.
"Mom it's like 3:20 it's almost time for dinner." Drew points out. I laugh,
"He's got a point Mom."
"Well if we eat a late lunch then we can have a late dinner after the game." Dad says.
"True," I say getting in the van.
"So back to my original question, where do you guys want to go for lunch?" Mom asks again.
"Let's go get subs so we can go do some other stuff." Drew says.
"Sounds good to me," I say in agreement.
"I think I saw a place like that back near the Ice Arena." Mom says.
"Alright we can head that way. Kids keep your eyes open." Dad says. We drive back towards the Ice Arena.
"I haven't seen anything for food," Drew says. All of a sudden, I see a sign for a sub shop.
"Right there Dad!" He quickly turns into the driveway. We get out of the van. I stretch and look around. I see the Rink right across from us. I start to laugh,
"Hey Dad, I found the rink!" He starts to laugh too,
"How could we miss that?"
"Let's go I'm hungry!" Drew whines. We go in, it's a nice little restaurant. There's only about ten tables. We go up and order, I get a foot-long, with turkey on Italian with mayo and pickles. We sit down,
"So, you guys want to see if the rink has any shinny?" Dad asks
"Yes!" Drew and me pretty much yell in unison.
"It's been over a week since I've stepped on the ice!" I complain.
"Well maybe if you would have played Bantam like I said you should you wouldn't have had that issue." Drew says. That's what Drew always says when I complain about lack of ice time. I roll my eyes, "You know I'm right!" Drew says.
"Eat your sub!" I tell him. He laughs and eats. After Drew and me are finished eating we go to the Rink and check the schedule. We look and find shinny starts in a half hour!
"Dude let's go grab our gear!" Drew says running out the doors. I chase after him,
"Slow down Drew!" I yell. He stops, and I catch up, "Are you sure you want to play shinny with Canadians?" I ask. It doesn't matter that I always play shinny, I always second guess myself a little bit before going out and playing with our boys, let alone guys from Canada!
"Angie who care if we make fools of ourselves? Not that we will, but we're in Canada no one knows us!" Unless our boys show up,
"I know but-"
"Look Angie if you don't want to play you don't have to but I am." Drew says cutting me off. We get to the car and find Mom and Dad getting in.
"Any shinny?" Mom asks when we get in.
"Yeah but Angie's second guessing it." Drew says calling me out.
"Well you don't have to play if you don't want to Ang." Mom says. Sometimes I wonder if Mom wants me to be more girly like paint my nails, and wear dresses. Ugh just the thought makes me shudder.
"No, I want to play." I insist.
"Alright then let's go!" Dad says, and we drive over to the Ice Arena.
