Chapter 19

633 Words
His father clears his throat slightly, trying to break the tension with a strained smile. Aiden's Father:”So… how did you and Aiden meet, exactly? He isn't usually one to bring people home.We were almost certain he was still single, weren't we Claire?” “It was when I had an accident,he saw me laying unconscious on the road so he took me to the hospital. And since then,we’ve known each other.” His mother’s lip curls ever so slightly— Aiden's Mother:”…How quaint.“ Aiden’s grip tightens again, his jaw clenching before he finally snaps—his voice sharp with warning. “That's enough. We're not here for interrogation. Either you two can actually try to be pleasant, or we'll leave now. Your choice.” His father looks at his son for a long moment before smiling again, a little less forced this time. Aiden's Father:”Of course. No need to be so grumpy, Aiden—it was just a little question.” Aiden doesn't respond—just grumbles and starts pulling me forward again, clearly wanting to end this as quickly as possible. But as I walk past Claire, her voice stops me again, her eyes narrowed on me. Aiden's Mother:”Wait a moment, sweetheart.” “Yes?” I lift my brows up. Aiden's Mother:”Tell me, sweetheart…. What exactly do you do for a living? Are you a student…? Or do you… work?” “Oh,i don’t currently have a job but I’m a graduate”. Her expression immediately goes cold—her lips pressing into a thin, unimpressed line as she exchanges a look with her husband. Aiden's Mother:”…Graduated from what, exactly? Community college?“ Aiden's Father: “Well! That’s… something at least! Right Claire?” His laugh is clearly nervous as he tries to smooth things over before Aiden loses it completely. I’m completely pissed at his mom but my slight smile still there. “Babe why don’t you show me around”,i whisper to him. Finally breaking the tension with a low murmur,Aiden replies— “Yeah,We can do that.” Without another word, he starts guiding me toward the hall—ignoring the way his mother’s eyes burn into my back as I walk away. Once we’re out of earshot, he leans down slightly to growl against my ear. ” …Told you she was ruthless. You good? Or are we leaving now?” “I’m kinda hurt that they don’t like me.” He presses a kiss to my forehead, his voice low and thick with when he speaks again. “Yeah. That’s why I don’t f*****g talk to them unless I have to, sweetheart.Tell me now… do you want out? Because we can leave right the hell now if that’s what you need.Or …We can give them a real reason to b***h about us before we go. Your choice.” “Just show me around. They’re so…cold.” "They always are.I was an accident and we were never even close. I barely remember them from my childhood. I had nannies who raised me until I was old enough to be shipped off to boarding school. It was very lonely, I never felt loved or cared for. But that's life and so I decided to make a name for myself and make my own fortune. I was foolish enough to think they would be proud of me, but no, it was never good enough." “Baby! I’m so sorry”. “It’s just life—This used to be my bedroom”. He opens the door and we enter. “I swear to God,nothing in this damn house is private”. He locks the door behind him, drags me to his chest and kisses me hard.
