Chapter 1 - The Interview

909 Words
My name is Taylor Smith, and I'm 23 years old, and I've been working as an Assistant for about 5 years. My Boss, Mr. Jack Watson, was one of the most powerful and successful man in New York. Being on Forbes Top 10 Entrepreneurs for a few years, Mr. Watson was the CEO of his own Company, very known in the Financial Industry. I started working at this Company when I was just a Freshman at Business School, and applied for their Internship Program. And this is my story. The chances of me getting in the internship were very low, since I was still on my first year of college, but I wanted to get some extra money by myself. My parents sent me an allowance that was enough for my living expenses, but I tried to earn my own money, and save as much as possible too. Hundreds of candidates, with far more experience than me, and there I was, waiting for my turn at the Interview. I was just analyzing the other candidates, and they were talking with each other about their other interviews at famous companies. This was my first interview in my whole life. Growing up in a small town in the middle of nowhere made it easy for me to get summer jobs. But nothing there can be compared to this internship. I started getting worried, thinking that there's no way I'm going to get in, how it would be a dream come true to work in a place like this. Distracted by my own thoughts, the time passed by, and soon enough it was my turn. "Mr. Smith?" said the secretary. "Y-yes.." I was so nervous, that I stuttered. "It's your turn now." she said smiling. "Oh, thank you." her smile helped me a lot. I collected all my strength, and went to the designated door, and knocked. "Come in." said a very deep voice. Slowly I opened the door, and got into the room. The whole interior was made of glass and steel, with all the decorations in white and silver tones. Everything was beautifully on its place, and in the middle of the room was THE Mr. Jack Watson. I couldn't believe the interviews were being carried away by Mr. Watson himself. I've only seen him on Business magazines, on TV, and heard about him in many articles online. It was quite a shock for me to meet my hero in real life. "Excuse me." I said, after closing the door behind me. "You may sit." he ordered. I walked to the chair slowly, taking care to not stumble on my way there. He was looking at my file, and after I seated, he started asking questions. "How old are you?" "18, sir." "Do you have any experience being an assistant?" "No, sir." "You can call me Mr. Watson." "Okay... No, Mr. Watson." "Hmmm... If you don't have any experience, why are you here?" His question almost made me cry, there, embarrassing myself in front of one of the most powerful man in the world. Taking a deep breath, and blinking a few times to hide my upcoming tears, I answered. "I came from a small town, and just started Business School here in New York. I am here because it's my dream to work in a Company like yours, and I will do anything in my power to accomplish my goals. I don't have any experience in this business, but I can assure you that I will put my best effort to do the best I can in everything you ask." This was my only chance to appeal my will and determination to work here. "That is quite a promise you're making." he said. "I always try my best in everything I do." I answered. That was true, but unfortunately I had only my words to prove it. Mr. Watson looked at my file once more, and said. "Let's see then." "Okay..?" I answered a little bit confused. "That's all, Mr. Smith. You can go now." "Thank you, Mr. Watson." I got up, shook his hand, smiling a little, and got out of the room. After closing the door behind me, I took a deep breath, that I didn't know I was holding. That was intimidating. No wonder he is powerful. His aura exhales power. I said my good bye to the very nice secretary, and went back to my dormitory. On my way out of the building, I looked around, wondering if someday I would be able to work there, or this would be the last time I'd be there. Distracted, I ended up crashing into a guy, who was also distracted by his phone, making my bag, and his phone fly away. "I'm so sorry!! I wasn't looking..." I apologized. "Of course! Clearly you wasn't looking!!" the other guy answered angry. He was on his twenties, and his wardrobe was outstanding, since he was wearing sunglasses, a leather jacket and jeans. I rapidly got my bag, and found his phone close to it. Oh, noo... The screen cracked.. "I am very sorry!!" I apologized again, giving back his damaged phone. "You should be." "I can pay for the damage..." I tried to solve the problem. "Don't bother!" he answered harshly and left. "Okay..." I was left confused in the middle of the lobby. I wish I can work here, but I hope I never meet this guy again.
