My name is Katherine and I love a vampire. I don’t love him in the way werewolves love their mates, I love him with a raw passion that exceeds logic and reason. My bodyguard Geoffrey doesn’t understand this love. He sees me as some fragile child still learning to walk. Every moment of every day my guardian watches over me. Father says it’s for my own safety but Geoffrey takes it one step further and never allows anyone to approach me without good reason.
My father is the alpha of the Solar Pack. He always takes a human wife and uses her for parts. I have seen the extent of my father’s love and I do not want any part of it. He just remarried and already it sent my mother into a frenzy that caused her heart to give out. Solene was the best thing that ever happened to him and for him to throw her away like a used tissue it sickened me.
Enter Devereaux Lecroix. He saw me for what I was strong, confident, and being restricted by the confines of a werewolf pack. I was born human as all my siblings ever are so I was expected to be given a choice in who I loved and where I spent the rest of my life. He gave me that choice, he saw me, loved me, and chose to free me from that prison I grew up in. Devereaux in all his glory had an exquisite figure, his blond hair and bright green eyes drew me in letting me know that he was my prince. His mother Lady Lacroix was the powerful leader of the vampire nest just one town over. She had the resources to save me all I needed to do was petition for the shift.
When a human petitions to be changed everyone is aware. My father would be told, the king and queen Fredrick and Emilie would be told, everyone who needed to know would be aware within hours of receiving the pamphlet. Was I ready to face the consequences of that?
Consequences were nothing compared to what I would gain. Geoffrey on the other hand wanted me to consider the pack life instead. He approached Devereaux and challenged him for my hand. I held no love for Geoffrey but that didn’t matter. Proper social convention dictates that upon receipt of my petition any suitor shall challenge for me. Geoffrey not only had the support of my father, but he had the support of our town mayor who didn’t want to lose someone so close to the alpha of the pack.
So with it decided that Geoffrey would duel Devereaux my life was placed on hold. It took weeks for the duel to take place, in that time I was placed under house arrest. My father had no shortage of cages for the young pups to make their full moon shifts. I had to hear them howling at the night begging for the moon to take pity on them. If I hadn’t already made up my mind before hearing that curse echoing in my ears was enough. Sure i might lose the sunlight, I might lose the ability to taste food and wine, but I would gain a love that would span multiple human lifetimes.
The morning of the duel I was permitted to see both the competitors. I declines to speak with Geoffrey when he approached me, there was no love and he needed to know I would never forgive him for what he was going to do. He told me how much he cared for me, how he had watched me blossom into a beautiful young woman. Apparently I did not need to throw my life away. Eternity was a long time and he was certain Devereaux would never be faithful for that long. I was setting myself up for failure, I needed to get my mind straight. It was his belief that he was going to win. There was no chance he was going to lose.
Devereaux, my champion, knows better than to try to touch me before the match. We gazed longingly into each other's eyes and I told him that no matter what I would love him until I die. I study every bit of him making sure to commit it to memory just in case the worst happens. The fear is very real for both of us, he could lose, I could be forced to stay with the werewolves, and we may very well never see eachother again. Before he leaves he hands me a locket. It’s gorgeous decorated on a silver chain with a large round face. The silver frame has emeralds on the edge tracing every inch in a circular pattern. The center has a large “L” carved into it in intricate calligraphy. Apparently this was his mother’s and he wanted me to have it so that I always knew the vampires were ready to welcome me into their family.
I had never received such a thoughtful gift before. My own mother was filled with so much resentment towards my father that she ignored me for the better part of my life, my father only cared about my future as if it affected his pack. Let’s face it, they weren’t my pack, they weren’t my family.
The battle was one I wasn’t allowed to watch, my father made sure I was tucked away in a carriage that was awaiting instructions on where to take me after the match. The match may have only taken a few minutes but to me time stood still. I could hear the cheering from the werewolves, the vampires were respectable and more reserved. This was going to be a bar fight and vampires were more accustomed to the polite constructs of a proper duel.
The way it was explained to me later was that Devereaux was showing a much higher promise early on than Geoffrey. Geoffrey was used to fighting younglings like himself, granted being a century old wasn’t a simple bat of the eye, but compared to Devereaux’s nearly three centuries it was a walk in the park. The poor werewolf was lost in his rage unable to make up the difference during the battle and found himself rendered without limbs rather quickly.
When it was over Devereaux spring into action taking me as quickly as possible back to the nest where I met my new family. They welcomed me like a child who was sorely missed after all these years. With his victory my petition was accepted and he turned me the next night. He was so perfect, so pure, and my every dream. Not a single mark on his gorgeous bady from the fight.
He would later ask me if I had any regrets about the way I left and I reassured him time and time again. I never belonged with those werewolves. They never appreciated me as a person. My father may have loved the idea of having children, but he was woefully unprepared for the emotional expectations that came with it. Sure when I was little he’d read to me stories about famous werewolves throughout history, but he never truly cared about how I was feeling.
When I heard he had another daughter years later I was saddened. She was sure to face the same terrible fate I was, lost to the wimp of a werewolf pack who didn’t care for her. I sought Lady Lacroix’s aid many times about it, but unfortunately there was nothing she could do at this point. It would take a miracle for her to be able to bring her into the nest without proper paperwork. The least I could do though would be to send a few vampires who were now under my command to watch over her. If she was anything like me she would be lonely, depressed, and isolated from any form of human interaction. The Least I could do would be to give her some assurance she was not alone. I sat down and wrote my letter a drone would give to her in passing.
My Dear Lady Claudia Howell of the Solar Pack,
You are the second daughter born of the ever powerful alpha York. I commend you and everything you are as you are more special than you believe. I am Katherine, I am your eldest sister. While you have no reason to trust me, or to love me, I simply write to you to let you know I am here for you. I know the extent of our father’s love, I know the terrors he spills through the streets. I found a way to escape him and his evil. No doubt he would have kept my existence hidden from you. Why would he want his greatest failure to be known throughout the pack? Especially since the very idea of what I had done might taint your views of the lies he weaves. If you ever find need for an escape you can find it with the Lacroix Vampires, we reside in the town of Dewsbury to the west. I hope this letter finds you well. It may not be my place to request this, but I do hope you keep my extension a secret from our father. He is not open to Vampires after I ran away to join them, but make no mistake. I am happier than I ever was in that pack. I love with a love so pure and full of life that I can feel my still heart flutter whenever he walks into a room. My only wish is that you will one day have a love as powerful. Never think the Solar Pack is your beginning or end, you are a human. You hold power the werewolves could never dream of. You are an alpha’s daughter but not confined by the pull of the full moon. PLease believe me when I implore you to never settle. Reach for what you want. You hold that Power.
For your consideration
Lady Katherine Lacroix
My name is Katherine. When I was born I was taught to love my father’s pack. I broke free, and one day I wish that same fate for my youngest sister. The werewolves are not all powerful like my father wishes, he sees them as the master race. A race I know to be flawed. While my husband is far from perfect I know him to be the man of my dreams. I know Devereaux is who will guide me to be more than what I believe. Everyday I show him my love. My name is Katherine Lacroix, I am in love with a vampire.
