The room felt stifling, a concoction of despair that indicated hopelessness and the acrid, potent odor of simmering herbs that assaulted Elara's sense of smell. Smoke spiraled and drifted lazily from the pot over the fire, gently winding its way into the dim corners of the small dwelling as if it aimed to suffocate the very essence inside. Each inhale seemed more burdensome than the one before. Elara knelt beside her father's bed, her trembling hands twisting a damp cloth. His face, once sturdy and reassuring, had become gaunt and pale, marked with signs of suffering. Each strained breath caused his body to convulse, a trace of blood darkening the corner of his lips. “Papa, I beg you,” Elara murmured, her voice wavering under the pressure of her fear. “You can’t leave me. I’ve already lost Mama—I can’t bear to lose you too.” Her father’s hollow eyes opened, lacking their usual brightness but still containing a flicker of the man he had been. “Elara…” His voice was a harsh whisper, barely reaching her. “I assured your mother that I would keep you safe. I... I won’t break that vow. Not now.” A harsh cough seized his frail body, spattering blood onto the cloth she held to his mouth. Tears streamed down Elara’s face as she clutched his hand, her grip trembling with trepidation. Memories of her mother’s unexpected death surged in her mind—the uncontrollable weeping, the unbearable void left in its wake. “I can’t carry this weight alone,” she cried. “You must fight, Papa. Please.” His frail fingers stirred in her grasp. “You’re braver than you know, my little star,” he croaked, a faint, pained smile flickering over his lips. “But... sometimes... strength means letting go.” “No!” Her voice rose in rebellion, yet her cry was overwhelmed by another bout of coughing that left him struggling for breath. An urgent knock at the door jolted her, sharp and persistent. She quickly wiped her face, forcing herself to regain her composure. The door groaned open, revealing Liam, her lifelong friend. His tall silhouette filled the doorway, his blue eyes shrouded in concern. “Elara,” he spoke gently, stepping inside. “The medicine man is waiting outside. He says he needs to talk to you.” Elara stole a glance back at her father, whose chest was rising and falling alarmingly unevenly, before she rose to her feet. Liam gently grasped her arm as she walked past. “You don’t have to go through this on your own,” he reassured her, his voice firm yet tinged with worry. “I’ll be right here.” She nodded, stifling a fresh surge of tears as she stepped outside. The healer stood beneath the ancient oak tree in the yard, his expression somber and serious. The lines on his weathered face seemed to darken as he met her gaze. “Elara,” he started, his voice deep and measured, “I’ve done all I can. The herbs aren’t working. His ailment... it’s beyond my capabilities.” Her heart plummeted as the breath left her chest. “No,” she replied resolutely. “There must be something Anything.” The healer hesitated, then sighed heavily. “There is... one thing. A rare elixir made from the starflower herb. It’s powerful enough to save him, but...” “But what?” she pressed, desperation sharpening her tone. “It grows only in the Alpha’s private gardens,” he said. “The herb is expensive, and the Alpha only gives it to those who earn his favor.” The words hit her like a blow. The Alpha, Kaelen Blackthorn, was a man known for his cruelty and greed. His favor came at a price few could afford to pay. The healer placed a hand on her shoulder, his expression grim. “I’m sorry, child. I wish I could do more.” As he walked away, Elara stood rooted to the spot, the weight of his words pressing down on her chest. Back inside, Elara slumped into a chair, her head in her hands. “What do I do, Liam?” she whispered, her voice barely audible. Liam knelt beside her, his warm hand covering hers. “We’ll figure it out,” he said gently. “You’re not alone in this.” Before she could respond, a deafening knock rattled the door. Both of them froze as the door burst open, the hinges creaking in protest. Four palace warriors stormed inside, their armor gleaming even in the dim light. The leader, a scar-faced brute, scanned the room with a sneer. “Elara Thorn?” he barked. Elara stood slowly, shielding her father with her body. “I’m here. What do you want?” “The Alpha has summoned you and your father to the palace,” the warrior declared. “Immediately.” He’s sick!” she protested, her voice shaking. “He can’t travel.” The scar-faced warrior sneered. “That’s not our concern.” Two of the warriors seized her father, dragging him from the bed. He cried out in pain, his frail soul unable to resist. “Stop!” Elara screamed, struggling versus the warriors who restrained her. “You’re hurting him!” Her father’s tear-filled vision met hers as he coughed up increasingly blood, his voice too weak to protest. “Elara, run,” he rasped. “Go—save yourself!” Panic surged through her. She tapped self-ruling from her captors and bolted for the forest, her heart pounding in her chest. Behind her, she heard the warriors shouting, their heavy boots thundering without her. “Elara!” Liam’s voice tabbed out as he chased without her. The forest sealed virtually her like a suffocating embrace. Branches clawed at her skin, roots threatened to trip her, but she didn’t stop. Her lungs burned, her legs screamed in protest, but still, she ran. The warriors unprotected her just as the forest thinned. Her screams echoed as they dragged her, kicking and fighting, when toward the imposing silhouette of the palace. Liam’s drastic shouts faded into the distance, leaving her utterly alone. In the throne room, Alpha Kaelen’s cold, gingerly vision locked on Elara as she was shoved to her knees surpassing him. Her father was dumped abreast her, his frail form lifeless but still breathing. Kaelen’s smirk widened as he loomed over her. “You’ve caused quite a stir, Elara Thorn. Let’s see if you’re worth the trouble.”
