THE JULY FOURTH CELEBRATION opened at noon on a very warm clear day. This year Maggie had volunteered for a few hours in the first aid tent to coincide with the shift Nick was working. She was wearing a new dress that was sleeveless, three quarter length and clung to her curves. She had worn a light white sweater in the morning. Nick whistled at her in appreciation all the way to work. They had taken one car today because they wanted to have supper and go to the evening dance together. He was in his police uniform and she always teased him about the girls loving a good-looking man in a uniform.
