Once the entire school discovered that Sam was a lesbian, she did become the pariah she predicted and the gates of brutality opened upon her. Even the girls on her team who tolerated her before no longer wanted anything to do with her and they certainly didn’t want her on their team.
She told her mother the ongoing saga at school and her mother had to get involved on her daughter’s behalf. Sue threatened to sue the school and the diocese if they attempted to act against her daughter. The school couldn’t refuse to let Sam play or expel her from school for being a homosexual but they could make life miserable for her and that is exactly what the students did.
