Chapter Five“Claudia? You there?” mom! What is she doing here?!
My eyes open wide in shock and he lets go of me instantly.
“s**t. I had no idea she was coming over,” I whisper.
“Umm, Mom? I’m here,” I call out, giving him an apologetic smile.
Immediately she saunters through the gate and in our direction. Noting that she’s immaculately dressed as always, every time I see her I am more convinced that I received the vast majority of genes from my dad’s side of the family, not hers.
“You weren’t answering the door, and your car wasn’t... Hey, Claudia, whose car is that?”
She’s hardly aware of us until she’s halfway up the garden path.
“Oh.” She gives Peter the visual once-over in a critical fashion which only a mother can get away with. “I see.”
