'Never, ever leave me again, Cubbie,' Nisse sobbed, and Maze smiled.
'I won't, baby. I'm back now,' she soothed, wiping away his tears, 'see? All better now.'
Nisse nodded before reaching into his pocket.
'Got this for you...' he sniffled, thrusting it towards her. She gasped in realisation.
'No way... my locket?'
'Ja! I found it for you!' Nisse nodded vigorously, and she opened it. Inside were three pictures of her dearest memories. One was of her, Nisse and Fai, all smiling and happy. She closed it and latched it around her neck with a sigh. That seemed like a very long time ago.
'Hey, Cubbie?'
'Yes, Nisse?'
'I miss Mutti,' Nisse admitted. 'Und Vati too. Und glücklich Fai. But I missed you the most.'
Maze smiled and hugged him close to her, watching his tail sway and curl.
'I missed you too, baby. I missed you too.'
'We were always close in the Aulers- that was our team-but those two were closer than anyone else. They were like mother and son, and I was her main friend. That's why, when she decided to foster him, I got roped in as a foster father. When the others... left, it was just us, but then she was taken away. We were a family and she left us. Nisse was heartbroken. It made sense for him to hug her after all this time,' Fai explained, and Dakota wiped his eyes.
'You must be so glad to have her back! You were obviously very close,' He gushed, and Fai scoffed.
'I don't want her here, she shouldn't even be here! She should be fighting now anyway.'
'I'm afraid not. She was only there so that they could analyse her style, sorry,' Cad informed, 'and by the way, she's permanent.'
Fai cursed silently as Zeko checked the time.
'Break, you guys. Let's take some time off!'
Nisse sprang to his feet, and Maze made to follow him. Zeko rushed to her side as she wobbled slightly.
'I'll be fine,' she assured him, setting steady feet one in front of the other as she followed Nisse. He hovered, worried even so.
Fai's mind spun as he watched her inconspicuously. Why couldn't she have gone somewhere safer?
