The next morning, Aria woke up feeling like she was walking on air. She had never felt such a strong connection with anyone before, and she couldn't wait to see Kael.
Just as her feets touched the flip flops, a knock came on the door.
“Yes please, come in” she said, walking to the mirror.
Aria was surprised to see an Envoy emerge into her room. She wore a curious face.
“To what do I owe this unexpected visit” came her voice.
“You've been called up on by the council, your presence is needed immediately”
“Alright I'll be out in a minute”. The envoy left with a slight bow.
She arrived at the Council hall a bit anxious, her eyes darted over to Kael's and Cassie's who stood at the corner. She smiled waving at Cassie who rolled her eyes off her.
“You sent for me,” Aria said, her voice echoing in the hall.
“Yes, we did,” Elara said.
“Well Kael summoned us this morning, I think he wants to say something to you”
Aria turned to Kael. “Kael?” She called.
“What's this about?”
Kael heaved a sigh, hesitating for a moment.
“Go on,” Cassie whispered.
“Cassie?” Aria called, her heartbeat increasing as she tensed up.
“What is it?” she asked, trying to keep her voice steady.
“I don't think we're compatible Aria, I no longer want you as my mate”
“I choose Cassie”
Every council member seated gasped in shock, Aria stood frozen, unsure she heard right.
“You must be joking, right?” Aria uttered.
“I'm not” came Kael's response. Aria stumbled back, her hands covering her mouth as she sprawled on the floor in uncontrollable tears.
She felt a wave of anger and hurt wash over her, why would Cassie do such a thing to her?
“You were my best friend, I trusted you Cassie” those words left her mouth and all Cassie could do was to stare.
Aria turned in her heel and walked away.
“Kael, you do know you can't go back on this right?” Elara asked.
Unresponsive, the council members got on their heels, each exiting the hall.
“You got what you wanted,” Kael said to Cassie.
“What I wanted?” Cassie scoffed.
“ You weren't forced into this Kael.”
“You had a choice and you made it, she might have been my best friend but you know I do it better”
“Oh please shut up Cassie” he spat rudely at her.
Cassie lauged.
“Oh you think I don't deserve it?You must have been so madly in love with Aria, Kael. All these years I waited patiently for you to fall out of love with her….and this”
Grabbing Cassie on the neck, Kael pinned her roughly on the wall, his breath hot against her face. She laughed, groaning painfully.
“Don't ever underestimate me Cassie” he said huskily.
“Don't!” He warned.
“I know you want me and that's why you rejected her, I give you what she doesn't and knows what that is?” Cassie managed to ask breathlessly.
“Satisfaction. The feeling of being in control of my mind and body” she spoke sexily, her eyes darting off to his lips.
Kael fell under Cassie's intoxication and he couldn't help but kiss her, his hands wandering all over her body. She moaned loudly in the hallway.
“I don't think we should be doing this here”
Kael said, pulling away.
“I know you want to f**k me Kael” Cassie hissed.
“So are we going to do it here or at your place, before I change my mind..” Keal grabbed her hands, his eyes locking onto hers. “Let's go then”
Aria woke up with a throbbing headache, her eyes swollen from all the tears earlier. She reached out for a glass of cup of water at the side table and drank a full cup. After that, she realised it was evening and could hear the drums beating, people cheering and dancing to the tunes.
“Cassie!” rang her thought.
“That backstabbing b***h!” she cursed hurrying up on her feet, anger flashing in her eyes. Aria couldn't believe what had just happened a few hours ago as she was trying to process everything the door flung open.
Steve stood at the doorstep, his eyes filled with pity for his poor girl.
“Aria” he called. Aria bursts out crying as she places her head on his shoulders.
‘Hey it's fine” he whispered
“Let it all out”
“Where did it all go wrong, Father?” She asked, sobbing.
“I love Kael”
“He's unworthy of you” Steve spoke, patting Aria on her back. She rose from his shoulders wiping off her tears.
“I'll go speak with him right away, Cassie's behind all of this, that b***h!”
“No. You'll stay here. And you'll stay away from the son of a b***h too.”
“You're kidding right?, you don't expect me to stay away from Kael, we've been together for years…”
“Well not anymore!”
Aria scoffed. “Are you listening to yourself father?.”
Aria scurried off before Steve could intervene. She left her chambers out in the open space where everyone seemed to be in a good and vibrant mood. Some eyes perked on her, and she heard some murmurs.
“Poor thing”
“Serves her right, she always felt too big around Kael” another chipped.
Aria trudged into Kael's chambers and found two stern bodies of champions standing at the door.
“I'm here to see Kael,” she said.
They both took a short glance at each other and without uttering a word they let her in. That was easy. She thought.
Her mind was filled with Keal and as she knobbed the door inwards, she froze, her jaws dropped open.
