Auntie Ama took Abina to the market to buy some essentials – soap, bag , and a uniform for school. Abina felt a thrill seeing the school supplies; this was really happening.
That evening, Auntie Ama sat Abina down. "Abi, I've talked to some people about getting you into a good school. But you'll need to work hard and help out here too. Can you do that?" Abina nodded eagerly. She was ready.
Auntie Ama's husband, Kofi, was often away on business, but when he was home, he seemed to watch Abina with an intensity that made her uncomfortable. Abina tried to brush it off, focusing on settling in and adjusting to the new school. One night, as Abina was getting ready for bed, Kofi came into the room, his eyes locked on hers. Abina felt a shiver run down her spine, but before she could react, he was standing over her, his hands grabbing at her. Abina tried to scream, but his hand was over her mouth. The next morning, she stumbled out of her room, tears streaming down her face. Abina felt a wave of shame and fear. She knew she wasn't mistaken, and she knew she had to get out of there.
