Chapter 2: A Heart That Chose Too Fast

754 Words
The campus was alive with the buzz of autumn—the smell of roasted coffee drifting from the café, music echoing from open dorm windows, and students rushing between classes. But for Isabella Carter, the world felt smaller lately, like it only existed between one person and one heartbeat—Ethan Hayes. She’d never fallen for anyone like this before. With Ethan, everything felt raw and real. He didn’t say things to impress her; he spoke like someone who saw the world differently. And somehow, that made her want to see it too. They started spending more time together—sneaking off between lectures, sharing fries at the diner where he worked, and driving around the city at night with no destination. Ethan’s car was old, the kind that rattled at every red light, but Isabella didn’t care. She loved how free it made her feel. “Tell me something no one knows about you,” Ethan said one night as they parked near the waterfront, watching city lights shimmer across the river. Isabella hesitated. “I hate the life my parents want for me.” He looked at her, surprised. “The rich life?” “The caged life,” she corrected softly. “Everything’s perfect, but it doesn’t feel like mine.” Ethan smiled faintly. “Then make it yours. You’re stronger than you think.” She turned to face him, her heart racing. “You really think so?” He reached over, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “I know so.” And then, like gravity couldn’t wait another second, she kissed him. It was slow at first—uncertain, trembling—but real. The kind of kiss that made you forget the world existed. When they finally pulled apart, she was smiling through her tears. “Now you know something no one else does,” she whispered. After that night, they were inseparable. They studied together, laughed until sunrise, and found comfort in each other’s quiet moments. He became her secret, her escape, her heartbeat between chaos. But not everyone was blind. Rumors spread quickly on campus—a rich girl dating a poor boy. Her friends whispered, her roommates questioned her choices. One of them, Claire, even tried to warn her. “Bella, be careful,” she said one morning as they walked to class. “People talk. And if your dad finds out…” “I don’t care,” Isabella cut in. “He makes me happy. That’s all that matters.” But happiness was never that simple. One evening, Ethan surprised her with a small gift—a silver chain with a tiny heart pendant. “It’s not much,” he said shyly, “but when you wear it, I want you to remember this—no matter what happens, I’m not going anywhere.” She hugged him tight, whispering against his chest, “Neither am I.” For the first time, she believed that love could win. But fate has a way of testing promises. Later that week, her father’s black Mercedes appeared outside her dorm. She froze when she saw him—William Carter, the man who owned half the companies in New York and the other half’s respect. He wasn’t smiling. “Get in the car,” he ordered. “Dad, I was just—” “I said get in the car, Isabella.” The silence during the ride was deafening. When they arrived home, her mother was waiting in the marble-floored living room, her expression cold but controlled. Her father finally spoke. “We need to talk about the boy you’ve been seeing.” Her heart dropped. “Dad—” “You will end it. Now.” Tears welled in her eyes. “You can’t tell me who to love.” Her mother’s voice cut through the tension, calm but cruel. “You think he loves you? He loves what you represent—money, status. He’ll never fit into this world, Isabella. And deep down, you know that.” She shook her head, voice trembling. “You don’t know him.” Her father’s eyes hardened. “If you don’t end it, I will make sure he does.” That night, Isabella cried harder than she ever had. She wanted to call Ethan, to tell him everything—but her phone was taken away, her freedom locked behind glass walls and family expectations. And for the first time, she realized love wasn’t the hardest part. Fighting for it was.
