Chapter 4

654 Words
Noah was clearly panicked. He knew full well that it was my father's patent that had propelled him to become the wealthiest man. He tried to speak, but my father pulled me away without a word. Just then, the principal called, angrily accusing me of not only disregarding the award ceremony but also of having an inappropriate private life. All the parents had gathered at the school and were demanding my expulsion. When I arrived at the school, I saw photos everywhere of me and Noah in intimate settings, each in different places. In the photos, I was completely naked, while Noah's face wasn't even shown. All the parents assumed I was living an unseemly life, believing I was constantly around different men, trying to please them, and thus unfit to be a teacher. To quell the parents' anger, the school eventually decided to expel me. As I wandered out of the school gates in a daze, I received a call from the traffic police. My father had been in a car accident, and the driver had fled the scene. I rushed to the hospital, but the attending doctor kept shaking his head. "The patient has multiple organ injuries, and the surgery is highly complex. We can only stop the bleeding for now, but to perform the surgery, we will need Mr. Leclair himself to be the surgeon to have any chance of saving him." Ethan was the best doctor at Morrow Hospital. I immediately called Noah, desperately begging him to have Ethan perform the surgery on my father. Noah agreed without hesitation. While waiting for Ethan to arrive, the police, based on a video of the accident scene unintentionally captured by a passerby, managed to track down the fleeing driver. "Mrs. Morrow, the driver intentionally ran into your father. We have strong evidence. If you don't want to settle out of court, we will help you file a lawsuit." Thinking of my father's mangled body, I could barely hold back my fury. "I won't settle out of court, and I will never issue a letter of forgiveness." The reckless driver walked past me, his expression arrogant, even whistling at me as he passed. "Beautiful lady, you'll be the one to come and pick me up." I forced myself to suppress the disgust, shooting him a look, then ignored him. Half an hour passed, and Ethan still hadn't arrived. I called Noah again, and his voice was unusually low. "Zoey, the one who hit your father is Freya's brother. Freya only has one relative. When she found out her brother was detained, she climbed to the roof and said if you don't write a letter of forgiveness, she'll jump off with the child." I finally understood why Adrian Wainwright had been so confident—because the person behind him was Noah. I asked coldly, "So what?" Noah sneered. "Zoey, you can't have everything. Do you want to save your father, or do you want Adrian to go to jail? Choose one." I nearly shouted in anger, "Noah, go watch the video, go see how he deliberately ran into my father. He tried to kill him! How do you expect me to forgive him?" Noah's voice remained indifferent. "I've already seen the video. It's just a regular car accident. He has no grudge with your father. It's just an accident. Why can't you just let it go and forgive him?" From the other side of the phone, I heard Freya's voice. "If Adrian goes to jail, I won't live either." Noah completely lost his patience and spoke into the phone. "If that's the case, I'll arrange for Ethan to go abroad for an exchange tonight. Zoey, you don't have much time left. 10, 9, 8..." My heart throbbed in intense pain. My father's life had become the bargaining chip Noah was using to force me to give in. When he reached 2, I yelled, "Stop."
