Chapter Twenty-Six: Another Date
Claire picks up her phone and gives William a call. She hasn’t spoken t him since their date. Her only contact with him has been through the harassing phone calls, and Claire isn’t totally convinced the calls are truly from William. She’s sure he’s the one orchestrating everything, but she isn’t certain the calls are coming from him. She’s sure William won’t answer. She’s sure the phone will go straight to voicemail or that he’ll decline the call, but William picks up on the second ring. “Claire,” he says, “I’m in the middle of something important. Can you make this quick?” “I wanted to invite you to dinner," Claire says. “Of course, it will be my treat again.” “I can’t,” William says, his tone clipped. “I have a lot of work and family stuff dealing with. Did you need anything else?”
