The failure of their first attempt did nothing to calm Vespera’s ambition or her rage—if anything, it made her more dangerous. She had been so certain that accusation alone would be enough to ruin Kai, and seeing her plans crumble had filled her with a cold, burning fury that she could no longer hide behind polite manners and smiles.
Within days, the atmosphere in the palace shifted again. Where before the threats had been quiet and subtle, now they grew sharper, more obvious. Kai began to notice small, worrying changes: the food she prepared sometimes tasted faintly of herbs she did not recognise, the paths she walked were suddenly blocked or guarded by unfamiliar men, and notes left in her quarters carried veiled warnings that left her skin crawling.
“Leave while you still can,” one note had said, written in an unsteady hand. “You are walking into a trap that will not miss.”
When she showed it to Rian, his jaw tightened with concern. “She is not just angry anymore,” he said quietly, looking at the paper with deep seriousness. “She is desperate. And desperate people do not think clearly. They take risks they would never normally take… but they also become careless, and that is exactly what we need.”
That evening, after all the staff and visitors had gone, Rian called Kai to sit with him by the fire, the room secure and private so they could speak without fear of being overheard.
“We cannot wait any longer,” he told her, his voice firm and resolute. “Every day that passes puts you in greater danger, and every day she grows stronger in her lies. We have proven she will stop at nothing to protect herself, and we have shown that simple accusations will not work. Now it is time to stop hiding and start showing the world exactly what she is.”
Kai leaned forward, her heart beating faster with excitement and fear. “What do we do?”
“We gather proof,” Rian answered. “We find the documents, the witnesses, and the facts that cannot be denied. And then… we bring the truth into the open. Not just to the King’s council, but to the entire court, and eventually to the people of the kingdom. She has ruled through deception and fear for far too long. It is time her mask was torn away, and everyone sees the monster she really is.”
Over the next weeks, they worked in secret, moving carefully but steadily. Rian used his authority to order old records and royal documents brought from the palace archives—documents that Vespera had hidden or destroyed years ago, when she first began plotting to take control. Kai, who knew the layout of the archives better than anyone, having spent hours there as a child looking for clues and answers, helped him search through the dusty shelves and locked cupboards.
They found it all there: ledgers showing how Vespera had stolen gold and grain meant for the people, lists of servants and officials she had paid to lie or betray their oaths, and most damning of all, hidden letters and notes that proved she had plotted against King Theron for years, and had even ordered his death to clear her way to power.
But documents alone were not enough. They needed people who would speak up, people who had seen her cruelty or been harmed by her actions, people who could testify to the truth with their own voices.
One evening, while they were reviewing the papers they had found, Kai thought of someone she had not seen in years. “There is someone,” she said slowly. “An old servant named Mara. She worked in the palace kitchens for as long as I can remember, and she was always kind to me. She saw things… she saw how Vespera treated people, how she would order people punished for no reason, how she took what she wanted without caring who she hurt. And she left the palace not long after my father died, because she was afraid of what would happen to her if she stayed. She lives in a small village not far from here now.”
Rian’s eyes lit up. “If she is honest and remembers what happened, she could be our strongest witness. If she will speak up.”
“We can go to her,” Kai said. “I know the way, and I know she will listen to me. She always believed I was innocent, even when everyone else said I was guilty.”
Two days later, they travelled out of the palace quietly, dressed as ordinary travellers, taking a route that avoided any notice. When they reached the small village, Mara was surprised to see them, but her face broke into a warm smile when she saw Kai. She listened carefully as Kai told her everything that had happened, about Vespera’s crimes, about the proof they had found, and about what they wanted her to do.
Mara did not hesitate. “I saw it all,” she said firmly, her eyes growing bright with anger and sadness. “I saw how she looked at your father, how she changed him little by little, making him trust no one but her. I saw how she ordered things hidden, how she punished people who spoke the truth. I was afraid to say anything before… but now I see that you are back, and that there are people who want justice. I will tell everyone what I know. I will stand before any court and say exactly what I saw.”
With Mara’s promise, they had the most powerful testimony they could ask for. When they returned to the palace, Rian gathered the full council of lords, officials, and important people from all parts of the kingdom, and called them all to a great meeting in the main hall of the palace.
When everyone was seated and quiet, Rian stood and looked out over the crowd, his voice clear and strong enough to reach every corner of the room.
“For too long,” he began, “this kingdom has been held back by lies, by deceit, and by the cruelty of one woman who has ruled from the shadows. For years, we have been told stories that were not true, and we have believed things that were not right. Today, I am going to show you the truth.”
He ordered the documents and records they had found to be brought forward, and he had Mara speak, telling them everything she had seen and knew. As she spoke, one by one, the truth was laid bare: the thefts, the betrayals, the plotting, and finally, the truth about King Theron’s death.
When she finished speaking, a murmur of shock and anger ran through the hall. People looked around at each other, their faces changing as they realised how they had been tricked, how they had trusted someone who had only ever wanted power for herself.
Then, Rian turned to where Vespera sat, hidden at the back of the hall, surrounded by her loyal followers. Her face was pale, her hands trembling, and all her confidence was gone.
“You have heard the truth,” Rian said, his voice loud and clear. “You have seen the proof, and you have heard the words of those who know what happened. You have ruled through fear and lies, but now those lies are gone. What do you have to say for yourself?”
Vespera stood up, her face twisted with rage, but there was no strength in her eyes anymore. “These are lies!” she shouted, her voice shaking. “They have tricked you! This girl is a traitor, and this man wants to take what is mine!”
But her words fell flat. No one cheered for her, no one defended her. The people who had once bowed to her now looked at her with disgust and fear, and even her most loyal followers began to look away, realising that their loyalty had been given to a criminal.
Kai stood where she was, her heart full of emotion—joy, relief, and a deep sense of justice. She looked at the woman who had destroyed her life, and she did not feel hatred anymore. She felt only the knowledge that the truth had finally come to light, and that evil would be punished.
Rian walked over to Vespera and stood before her, his expression firm but just.
“You are accused of treason, of murder, and of stealing from the people you were meant to serve,” he said. “You will be held to answer for every crime you have committed. And the time has come for the rightful order of this kingdom to be restored.”
He turned back to the crowd, and his voice rose again, strong and hopeful.
“Today, we begin a new chapter. The lies are gone, and the truth stands clear. The Princess Kailara, who was wrongfully accused and driven away, has returned. And she is the rightful heir to this throne, to take her place as ruler of this land that her father built, and that you and I will now build together, in justice and truth.”
The hall fell silent for a moment, and then, slowly at first, then growing louder and louder, voices began to call out. “Long live the Princess!” they shouted. “Justice has been done! Truth has won!”
Kai stood there, listening to the cheers and seeing the faces around her, and she knew that everything had changed. The darkness was gone, the shadows were lifted, and finally, after so many years of pain and waiting, justice had come.
