Eyes Everywhere

The first light of dawn had barely touched the high windows of the royal chambers when Kai returned, her movements quiet and precise as always, yet carrying a quiet confidence that hadn’t been there before. The heavy weight of secrecy still rested upon her shoulders, but it no longer felt like a burden meant to crush her; instead, it felt like armor. Every glance she cast, every word she heard, every step she took now served a clear purpose: she was watching, listening, and gathering the threads that would one day unravel Vespera’s entire web of deceit. Rian was already awake, seated by the window going over letters and dispatches, but he looked up the moment she entered. There was no need for words between them now—just a brief, shared look that held understanding, caution, and the quiet strength of their unspoken pact. To anyone else, she was simply a servant arriving to begin her day’s duties, and he was merely the King acknowledging a member of his household. But between them lay a truth that could burn the whole palace down if ever revealed. “Prepare water and fresh linen,” he said calmly, his tone formal, just loud enough for anyone lingering outside to hear. “And have breakfast brought shortly.” “At once, Your Majesty,” she replied, bowing her head, though as she passed near his chair, her voice dropped to a breathless whisper only he could catch. “Two guards changed shifts last night—men I have never seen before. They were posted unusually close to your private door.” Rian gave the faintest nod, his expression never shifting. “New assignments from the Captain, I expect. Or perhaps… placed by other hands.” He turned back to his papers. “Keep your eyes open. Even the walls have ears here.” Throughout the morning, the flow of visitors began as usual—lords, advisors, military commanders, and messengers coming and going with reports, petitions, and sealed correspondence. Kai moved silently in the background, pouring wine, refilling inkwells, tending the fire, always present yet never drawing attention to herself. But her ears were tuned to every word, every hesitation, every choice of phrase that held double meaning. It wasn’t long before she spotted exactly what Rian had warned her about. Mid‑morning, Lord Valerius arrived—an older noble with silver hair and a smile that never quite reached his cold grey eyes. He was known to be close to the Queen Dowager, often seen lingering in the western wing, yet he always approached Rian with exaggerated deference and loyalty. As he spoke of trade routes and border defenses, Kai noticed how his gaze constantly drifted, scanning the room, lingering on maps laid out across the table, and glancing sharply in her direction more than once, as if trying to place exactly who she was and why she was permitted so close to the King. “And how fares Her Majesty, the Dowager Queen?” Rian asked casually halfway through their discussion, his tone polite but entirely neutral. “I trust she is well?” Lord Valerius bowed deeply, hands clasped together reverently. “She is in excellent health, Sire. Though she often expresses concern… for your safety, and for the stability of the realm. She worries that certain influences may be clouding your judgment, or that untrustworthy persons might gain too easy access to your presence.” His eyes flickered toward Kai again, sharp and deliberate. “She urges caution above all things. Some faces are not as familiar as they ought to be.” Kai kept her head bowed, polishing a silver goblet slowly, her heart steady despite the clear threat hidden beneath his courteous words. He is talking about me, she realised instantly. Vespera already suspects someone new is close to him, and she is sending warnings through her puppets. Rian’s expression remained unreadable, though his voice hardened just slightly. “I choose my own household, Lord Valerius. And I judge trustworthiness by loyalty and service, not by familiarity or birth. Her concern is noted… but I decide who stands near me.” “Of course, Sire. Only what is best for the kingdom,” Valerius replied smoothly, though Kai caught the flash of annoyance in his eyes before he masked it again. When he finally departed, Kai waited until the heavy doors clicked shut before stepping closer to Rian’s side, speaking softly and quickly. “He is her spy. He came not just to report to you, but to observe you—and me. She knows someone new has your ear, and she is already trying to cast doubt.” “I expected as much,” Rian muttered, his jaw tight with frustration. “She tests me constantly, trying to see how far she can push, trying to isolate me from anyone she cannot control. She fears anyone who might help her see the truth. And she fears you most of all, even if she does not yet know exactly who you are.” He turned fully toward her, his gaze intense and serious. “You are walking through a minefield, Kai. Every glance, every moment you spend near me makes you a target. If she suspects even a fraction of the truth… she will not hesitate to eliminate you quietly before you can expose her.” “I have survived her attempts before,” Kai answered firmly, lifting her chin. “And I am not hiding from her shadows anymore. Let her watch. Let her suspect. Every move she makes, every word she speaks, only gives us more proof of her true nature.” Rian reached out, briefly brushing his fingers against hers—a touch of reassurance, quick and fleeting before he pulled away again, conscious that even inside these chambers, nothing was truly private. “Brave words. But be careful. Vespera does not strike openly; she strikes through poison, accidents, false accusations… things that leave no trace and look like misfortune. Trust no food you did not prepare yourself. Drink nothing unless poured from sealed vessels. And never walk alone through quiet corridors or unlit passages.” “I will be cautious,” she promised, though her resolve only hardened further. “But I will not stop watching her. If she is planning something—against you, against the realm, or against me—I will find it out.” Later that afternoon, opportunity presented itself sooner than expected. Rian was called away to meet with his council, leaving Kai alone in his chambers to tidy and secure documents. As she sorted through letters and reports, her sharp eyes caught sight of a folded note tucked carelessly behind a ledger—written in a hand she did not recognise, but sealed with the faint imprint of the silver swan, Vespera’s personal emblem. Her breath caught. This was exactly the kind of evidence they needed. Quickly but carefully, she memorised every word written within—a message sent from Vespera to Valerius, instructions urging him to “keep close watch over the new attendant” and “discover her origins and purpose without delay,” warning that “the lost rat may have returned to gnaw at our foundations.” Her blood ran cold but her mind raced fast. She knows. Or at least, she strongly suspects I am alive and here. When Rian returned shortly after, Kai immediately stepped forward, her voice low and urgent. “I found this—hidden among your papers. She knows I am here, Rian. She suspects exactly who I might be, and she has ordered her men to investigate and watch my every move.” Rian read the lines she recited back to him, his expression darkening into stormy intensity. “Then we move faster than planned. If she is already hunting you, we cannot wait months to gather proof. We must accelerate everything, draw her out into the open where her treachery will be undeniable to all.” He looked at Kai, fierce and determined. “This just became far more dangerous… but also far clearer. She is revealing her hand, and every move she makes tightens the noose around her own neck.” He reached out, gripping her shoulders gently but firmly, looking deep into her eyes. “You are in grave danger now, Kai—more than ever before. But you are also the key to ending this nightmare once and for all. Can you endure this? Can you play this part perfectly, even while knowing she hunts you?” Kai did not hesitate for even a heartbeat. She met his gaze steadily, fearless and resolute. “I have endured five years of running and hiding. I have endured losing everything I loved. I will endure this, and more, until she answers for her crimes. I am not leaving your side, and I am not stepping back into the shadows—not until justice is done.” Rian gave a sharp, determined nod, fire burning in his own eyes matching hers. “Then let her come. Let her send her spies, her threats, and her lies. We will turn every single one against her. And soon enough… the hunter will become the hunted.” As she returned to her tasks, Kai knew with absolute certainty: the game had shifted again. No longer were they simply gathering information and waiting. Now, they were actively drawing Vespera into her own trap, walking a razor‑thin line between survival and destruction, truth and lies… but walking it together. And whatever came next, whatever dangers lay ahead, she would face them head‑on—for her father, for her crown, and for the man standing beside her who had finally given her a reason to hope again.
