Face to Face

The air inside Vespera’s chambers felt thick, heavy with the scent of expensive perfumes, dried roses, and something colder—something sharp and unforgiving that brought every buried memory rushing back to Kai in an instant. This room had once been familiar to her; she had run across these same marble floors, touched these same silk tapestries, sat beside this very woman thinking she had found a mother. Now, stepping over the threshold felt like walking straight into a cage lined with fine silk and hidden blades. Kai kept her head bowed low, exactly as a humble servant should, her hands folded demurely before her, every muscle held tense and controlled. She could feel Vespera’s gaze sweeping over her from head to toe—inspecting, dissecting, searching for even the smallest c***k in her disguise, exactly as Rian had warned she would. Those cold, pale eyes had always missed nothing; they had studied Kai for years, learning every habit, every expression, every tell that might betray her true thoughts. Now, they were doing it all over again, with far more dangerous intent. “Come closer, child,” Vespera spoke, her voice smooth, melodic, and sickeningly sweet—the same tone she had used years ago to mask every cruel word and wicked plan. “Do not stand so far away as if you are afraid of me. I am merely the King’s mother, and your Queen Dowager. I only wish to see the girl who has captured so much of His Majesty’s attention lately.” Kai stepped forward slowly, each step measured and quiet, stopping several paces before the raised dais where Vespera sat enthroned amidst cushions and gold. “Thank you, Your Majesty. I serve only to please the King and obey all who rule over us.” “Such polite words,” Vespera murmured, tilting her head slightly, her eyes never leaving Kai’s face. She rose slowly from her chair, gliding forward with that graceful, predatory elegance she was famous for, circling Kai just as Rian had done many times before—but where his inspection held curiosity and suspicion, Vespera’s held pure menace wrapped in beauty. “And yet… there is something about you. Something familiar. Tell me, girl… where are you from originally? You speak clearly, move with a grace uncommon to those born in hardship.” It was the first test, sharp and direct, designed to catch her off guard. Kai had rehearsed this answer a hundred times, but hearing it asked by her, with that knowing glint in her eyes, sent a cold jolt through her veins. “I come from the outer villages, Your Majesty,” she replied softly, keeping her tone humble and slightly rough, just as a peasant girl would speak. “My parents were simple farmers. I learned manners only during my time serving in the lower halls here.” “Farmers,” Vespera repeated slowly, dragging the word out as if tasting something bitter. She reached out suddenly, her fingers gripping Kai’s chin firmly, lifting her face upward until their eyes met directly—those cold, beautiful blue eyes staring straight into Kai’s soul, searching, probing, recognising. “And yet… your eyes… they hold a fire I have only seen in one other person. A girl I knew many years ago. A girl who sadly… met a terrible end.” Kai forced herself not to flinch, not to look away, meeting that icy gaze with wide, seemingly innocent eyes, masking the hatred and pain screaming inside her chest. She knows, her mind whispered. Or at least she suspects. She is taunting me, trying to make me react. “I know of no one like that, Your Majesty,” Kai said, her voice steady though quiet. “I have lived a simple life. I have never been anywhere but the fields and the palace.” Vespera smiled then—a beautiful, terrifying smile that never reached her eyes. “Of course. Forgive me. Sometimes faces from the past linger in my memory, and I mistake them for strangers. Grief does strange things to the mind, you know… especially when one loses those closest to them.” She released Kai’s chin, her fingers trailing lightly down Kai’s jawline in a gesture that felt far too intimate and threatening all at once. “I lost my beloved husband, King Theron… and my dear stepdaughter, Princess Kailara. Such a tragedy. She was a wild, stubborn little thing… always thinking herself above everyone else. She ran away, you see… or so they say. Perhaps she is still alive somewhere… hiding, pretending to be something she is not. Wouldn’t that be interesting?” The words hung heavy between them, a clear, unmistakable challenge thrown right into her face. Kai’s heart hammered wildly against her ribs, but she kept her expression perfectly blank, looking at Vespera with only respectful confusion. “I… I have heard stories, Your Majesty. But surely… the Princess is gone. Everyone says so.” “Everyone says many things,” Vespera whispered, stepping even closer, leaning in until only inches separated them, her voice dropping low and venomous, stripped of all false sweetness for just a heartbeat. “But I have learned… that dead things sometimes have a way of crawling back from the dark. And when they do… they often bring nothing but trouble and betrayal. And I always know exactly how to deal with pests that refuse to stay buried.” The threat was clear as day, sharp and deadly, hanging thick in the air. Kai felt the full weight of the woman’s hatred, her fear, her absolute certainty that she would crush any threat to her power without mercy or hesitation. This was not just suspicion anymore—Vespera believed. She didn't have proof yet, but she knew deep down exactly who stood before her. And she intended to make Kai suffer for every moment she had dared return. Then, just as quickly, Vespera pulled back, her expression smoothing back into that regal, composed mask, as if nothing threatening had passed between them. She turned away and walked back to her chair, speaking loud enough for her waiting ladies and guards to hear. “You seem a capable enough girl. But I must warn you… serving the King is a heavy responsibility. There are many who would seek to use someone in your position to gain favor or spread lies. Be very careful who you trust, and what you say… for eyes are always watching, and even the smallest mistake can lead to ruin. Or worse.” She looked back at Kai over her shoulder, her gaze cold and triumphant. “You may go now. But I will be watching you closely, maid. Very closely. And should I find you are not exactly who you claim to be… I promise you, the punishment will be most severe.” Kai bowed low, deep and respectful, hiding the fire burning in her eyes. “Thank you for your guidance, Your Majesty. I will remember every word.” As she turned to leave, she felt Vespera’s gaze burning into her back like a physical blow, following her every step until the heavy doors finally closed behind her. Once out in the corridor, safe from those piercing eyes, Kai let out a shaky breath she had been holding for what felt like an eternity. Her hands were trembling—not from fear alone, but from the raw, raging emotion of finally standing face‑to‑face with the woman who had destroyed her world, and surviving it. She had played her part perfectly, she knew—but Vespera had played hers even better, revealing exactly how deep her hatred ran, exactly how terrified she truly was of the past returning to haunt her. And as Rian had planned, she had taken the bait completely—confirming her suspicions, revealing her threats, and sealing her own path toward destruction. Kai hurried back toward the royal chambers, her mind racing. Vespera was certain now. She would act soon—perhaps very soon—either to accuse her openly or to silence her forever. And now the trap was fully set. All they needed was for the Queen Dowager to make her fatal move… and then, finally, the truth would come crashing down upon her. When Kai stepped back inside Rian’s chambers, he was waiting by the hearth, instantly reading the tension written across her face. “She knows,” Kai whispered, meeting his gaze, her eyes blazing with fierce resolve. “She knows exactly who I am… and she intends to destroy me before I can destroy her. The game is truly on now.”
