Chapter 7- Coincedence

He completely overlooked King, who remained seated, observing this turn of events with veiled interest. Onyx glared at him, bounding her soft hands into fists. "Darius, watch your mouth. This is a public place." She glanced briefly at King as she said this, trying to communicate to the uncultured man to be careful with his next words. Despite her ire at his presence, Onyx kept her tone levelled. She knew he wouldn't listen to her, but she still tried to speak some sense to him. This wasn't the first time Darius was harassing her in public. He did it whenever he saw fit. The man had an interest in her she couldn't understand. She repeatedly declined Darius's advances, but he continued to assert that she was his wherever he went. Onyx couldn't do anything drastic about his continual pestering because all of Leytan City favoured him. Darius was a scion of one of the wealthiest families In the city. People avoided crossing paths with him unless they wanted to please him. Upsetting Darius meant invoking the wrath of his entire family, and his family always went to great lengths to destroy whoever they were dissatisfied with. Still ignoring King, Darius scoffed at Onyx's warning. He took a threatening step towards her, narrowing his eyes in a deriding manner. "Don't take an inch when given a yard, dear Onyx." His jeering smile triggered an irritation in her. She clenched her teeth together as he took more infringing steps towards her. "Who in Leytan city doesn't know you are the one I have taken fancy to? Why do you think you can recruit men behind my back and I would be pleased with it?" Darius' smile twitched as a wave of possessiveness washed over him. This was his woman. Ever since she moved to Leytan City, Onyx had always occupied his thoughts. She was bewitching in every sense. Her strong will, despite her brittle look, overpowered every female he had ever met and her maturity was something young girls her age lacked. For a woman of her status, she wasn't the snobbish or extravagant type. Onyx threaded on tender grounds. She had a smile for everyone and always stuck to her business. Onyx wasn't just alluring, but she carried this glow around her that made a man want to claim her for himself. Her wonderful curves were delicate and wantonly provoking in every way imaginable. Darius wanted to get her in his bed, but that could wait for later. That wasn't the principal aim of his demand for her. When she caught his fancy, Darius employed his men to do a thorough background check on her. They spied on her for months and he got the tip that she had connections with the Alpha of Luminescence Park in Ivoria City. That was a strong connection Darius craved and he would stop at nothing to get it. Ivorian city was rich in white gold, but they were wary of foreigners or visitors. The city had a strict privacy policy that made it difficult for outsiders to gain access to any of their dealings. Darius believed having an Alpha from that city in his court would push him to great lengths in the capital market. He could expand his wealth and name throughout the 13 cities of Bloomsville Kingdom. Sticking close to Onyx would get him closer to that dream, and he would continue to do that until he got what he wanted. Pleasures could come later, or not. She was his forbidden fruit and nobody else was going to have her. "Darius, get out of my company or I'd call the authorities on you." Onyx fumed, her voice low with anger. Her eyes shot out daggers that could have killed him if they were real. Darius bent his head forward to let out a taunting laugh. When he looked back at her, his eyes gleamed with unguarded mockery. He mimicked her words with a jeer that offended Onyx. It took all the restraints in her not to strike this man in the face. She was still very aware of King's overpowering presence and having him witness this blatant humiliation upset her more than she could handle. Her knuckles grew a ghostly white from the tight fisting of her hands. They were almost turning blue from their lack of blood. "What do you want, Darius?" Onyx's voice trembled from the intense rage she felt. Her captivating eyes had darkened into a storm. It agonised her to ask this question, especially when she knew the response wouldn't be in her favour. Darius gave a content smile that showed his crooked dentition. Onyx winced at this, her irritation for him boiling stronger. When it came to looks, Darius wasn't the appealing sort. His only saving grace was the luxury wears he drowned himself with. Without his money, he looked as distasteful as his soiled character. "It's simple, my dear, Onyx." Darius lowered his voice to a threatening whisper. It was the first time his voice had dropped since he stormed in blustering like an untamed beast. "Do as I say, and I wouldn't have to go on extra measures to destroy you." Darius inched closer to her face as he continued with his threat. "With just one call, I can make your company go bankrupt. I would ensure your daughter gets expelled from her school and no other school would take her. On my order, you'd get thrown out into the streets and you'd have no choice but to come begging for me." Every word Darius spoke fanned against Onyx's skin, with a scorching intensity that melted her to the bone. She knew he meant his threat. Darius was as ruthless as they came. So many people in this city committed suicide just to escape his judgement. She would just be another trophy for his immoral achievements. "What do you want, Darius?" Onyx repeated this question with a calm that surprised her. "It's simple darling." Darius reared back, observing his jagged nails like they were the most interesting thing in the world. "Just make me the father of that bastard you call your child." He let out a maniacal laugh, reaching to touch her chin. His hand didn't make it to her face. In a rapid and fluid motion, King grabbed him by the collar, pulling him back. His rough pull made Darius stumble on his feet. He hit the floor with an unflattering flourish. "Are you tired of living?" King demanded with imminence. His fury shook the entire room, causing the windows and door to clatter. Onyx slumped down into her seat, a stray tear escaping one eye. She let out a sigh of relief that soon gave room for a renewed dread. "What the hell!" Darius screamed exactly like a crabby child. His voice was nowhere as menacing as King's, who hawked over him with a murderous glare. With each fatal step King took, Darius crawled back, trying to get away from him. Tired of straining his neck to look down at him, King bent to grab his collar again. He plucked him up with a lenient grace. After yanking him to his feet, King straightened the crease on Darius's ruffled shirt with feigned concentration. "Who the hell are you?" Darius slapped his hands off, embarrassed beyond belief. This hulking man in front of him petrified him, but he wouldn't let him see that. He stood his ground, daring to glare even though his body felt like soaked noodles. King shook his head at him with a frown then turned back to take his seat without awarding him a response. Darius barked after him, too infuriated to stop shuddering. "How dare you touch and threaten me? Do you know who I am? Do you know what..." Darius's words trailed into the air when his grieving gaze caught King's CV laying discarded on the table. He staggered back with a startled chuckle. "Are you..." Darius let his gaze wander between a bewildered Onyx and a complacent King. He let out another incredulous laugh and then pointed at King. "You are here for an interview and you dare to put those filthy fingers on me?" Darius turned to Onyx, eyes twitching with spite. "Is this what you are hiring, you b***h?" "Watch your mouth?" King growled at him, not bothering to stand up. "I would drain out your blood in one squeeze if you say one more word of insult to Miss Jameson and her daughter." "King, please." Onyx heaved, fearing more for King's life than hers. He didn't know what Darius was capable of, and if he continued like this, he might not live to tell the tale. Both men disregarded her, too focused on glowering at each other to notice her silent plea. Onyx hyperventilated as she watched this brewing disaster. "You know what? I admire your confidence." Darius stood up straight, folding his arms and scowling down at King who subdued his staredown. "I assume that you don't know what I am worth in this city. You are too starved to be well informed. But, because I like you, I'd give you the grace to seek my forgiveness." Darius narrowed his eyes into slits. "You'd kneel now, bow to me, apologise for your insolence, and scurry out of here or else..." "Or else what?" King's lips curled into an intrigued smile. "You'd experience the wrath of the Thatcher family." Darius sneered his brown eyes, taking on a conquering look. "The Thatcher family?" King repeated in a whisper, his cankerous stare morphing into shock. That was undoubtedly Sage's family line. It wasn't a direct bloodline, but King had an indefinite memory of Sage mentioning her connection with the Thatchers. She had hinted at them being part of her family's ancestral line. King was aware that Sage descended from a large web of extended relatives, but he didn't know how much they were. Her father, Malcolm Myrna, spread his seeds wherever he saw fit, granting him more bastards than legitimate children. Nova had done thorough research on Sage and presented King with all there was to know about her except information about her family tree. He made a mental note to ask for research on this aspect of her life. In his absence, Sage renamed his stolen company from the K dynasty to Sage's dynasty. Typical, except that she spread out the company's shares with the silver dust pack. King didn't know why she did that, but he could make a strong guess. She wanted power. Power only an alliance with the Pack members could grant her. The stolen company's massive revenues brought immense wealth to Sage. It plummeted her family name from their inconspicuous class to one of the affluents in Leytan city. The Myrna family could compete with the city's elite today because of their stolen wealth. Their name reigned today because King laid the foundation. This unplanned disclosure from Darius revived King's rage. He had planned to deal with Sage when he settled, but fate had other plans. Since they were related, he could use this man to hint at his return. Sage was smart. She'd get the message. Darius mistook King's disquiet for fear. His grin spread out on his face as an exalting dress. "You scared little boy? You know about the Thatcher ways and now y..." Darius' sneer got cut off by a deafening slap to his face. "Would you shut up, you thieving hog!" King's voice boomed over the room as he hovered around Darius. His vicious slap left a visible red print on the left side of Darius' face where his palm had landed. Onyx squealed and jumped in her seat. Her distress increased by the minute as she watched on, helpless to this chaos. King was definitely in trouble, and it was because of her. She should do something. Stop him, call his attention to the danger he was getting into, anything, but her reflexes wouldn't work. Darius held his face staggering backwards, too raddled to speak words. His mouth flopped open, but nothing came out. It's been ages since anyone stood up to him, let alone hit him. King's imposing figure and destructive glare had his knees buckling beneath him. He tried speaking again, but only a shuddering whimper left his lips. His face stung, causing furious tears to reel into his eyes. "I could snuff out your life this instant, but I'd be merciful." King's low tone was deadly. It only grew more venomous as he spoke. "Before I change my mind, get on your knees right now and apologise to Miss Jameson." At the sound of this, Onyx flung herself to her feet. "No, no. He won't, he doesn't have to..." She scrambled towards King, nudging his sides with her fingers to draw his attention. "What do you think you are doing?" She rebuked in a harsh whisper that was so loud her receptionist probably heard it. King turned to give her a mild look. His anger dissolved an inch at her terrified sight. "Please King, you need to apologise to him. You don't know what you are dealing with." Onyx's voice came out shaky due to her panic. "This man is the devil incarnate. He doesn't work alone. There's more of him. You'd better go now before it gets any worse. Leave this city 'cause they'd come after you." She rushed out at once. Not taking a second to breathe between her words. To her, King was a righteous man. His actions just now further proved it. Being a veteran must have taught him to never look away from injustice, and she appreciated that. However, some injustices, like this one, shouldn't be faced. Soldier or not, Darius could ruin his life, maybe even end it. "Don't worry, it's fine." King gave her an assuring smile. "You don't know what you are doing." Onyx persisted, her voice becoming an outcry for sanity. This man was too pure to understand the sinister ways of the real world. Years of military camaraderie must have shielded him from how this society worked. He was naÏve, and he was about to learn the truth the hard way. Onyx felt guilty for putting King in this position. She felt responsible for his safety. The urgent need to protect him enveloped her in a baffling way. She didn't mind reaching out to her father, who she hadn't spoken to in years, for King's protection. Seeing that she couldn't penetrate King's adamant resolve, she shot a hasty glare at Darius. "Listen, he was a city soldier. If you dare retaliate against him..." "What if I do?" Darius seethed, dropping his palm from his now swollen cheek. When Onyx spotted this, she gasped, looking from his damaged cheek to King's rough hands. Her delicate palms hugged her lips. This was a disaster waiting to explode. Her heart tugged against her ribcage, beating a thousand miles per second. "No pretty-faced soldier is going to threaten me in this city! I own all of Leytan City! You both shall bow right now and apologise to me or I'd have you locked up this instant." Darius' livid scream filled the room. "Darius, please. We can discuss this amicably." Onyx pleaded, alarmed beyond rational thought. All her attempts at trying to restore Darius' sanity were futile. The man raved and ranted out loads of exaggerated threats. "I'd do anything you request, Darius, please!" Onyx cried out, bought off by his threats. This statement calmed him. He sneered like a fiend, his brown eyes lightening up with evil intent. Darius gave King a victorious glare, then turned back to Onyx. "I don't know why you are wasting your time shielding this fool, but if you insist... Here's my term. Be my girlfriend and start gracing my bed from tonight." The words were barely out of his mouth when another face-rearranging slap landed on his undamaged cheek. This one was more ferocious than the last and it cut his lip, permitting a trail of blood to flow down his chin. Onyx gasped again, covering her open mouth with her palms. Two confused pairs of eyes turned to look at King. "Say that again and you'd wake up on the other side of life," King growled. This time, King put effort into restraining himself. He was tempted to unleash his anger and just end this i***t's life. "Are you out of your damned mind?" Shocked tears spilt out of Darius's eyes. The pain on his cheek lowered his voice to a whine. King kept growling, taking daring steps towards Darius. One at a time. Purposeful and stern. With each step King took forward, Darius took one step backwards whimpering as he did so. He looked like he'd cry for his parents any moment from now. King's frown was lethargic. He noticed one of Darius's fingers rummaging through his pocket. The sight fascinated him, fueling his delight. This man who was all talk could not fight him. King stopped moving when Darius's back hit the door, trapping him in a cage he had unlocked himself. One trembling palm held his cheek while the other finally fished out his phone. "Go ahead, call your daddy," King fleered, amused at his cowering form. He hadn't even done his worst, and this man was taking a bow. What a boring contender. King almost yawned. "I'm calling the police." Darius' breathy reply jerked out a chuckle from King. "Go ahead, I'd dictate the number." King cheered him dictating the number. Darius struggled to keep his hands steady as he dialled. The recipient picked up on the third ring. Just as Darius caught his breath to report the situation, King grabbed the phone from his hands, making the report with unyielding confidence. "This is King Salvator, reporting from Hegwards building, room 1805. There's an ongoing case of female harassment, intimidation, a threat to life, destruction of property, and human violence. Please come over right now to take up this case." Darius smirked at King's report. At the other end of the phone, he heard the responder give out an agreement. King hung up the phone, handing it back to Darius with a centred moue. "You just dug your grave," Darius whispered to him, taking the phone.
