Ashley's POV My heart thrummed like a jackhammer, propelling me forward from where I lay, gasps and erratic breaths forced their way out of my lungs. I immediately placed my palm over my mouth when I saw my mom lying beside me. Gently, I lifted the sheets off my legs and tiptoed into the restroom. The splashes of cold water on my face lessened the headache. But when I stared into the mirror, the memories came rushing in. Loud gunshots cut through the air, startling me. My shallow breaths soon turned into sobs and whimpers, making my bones weak until I fell against the cold floor. I backed away from the sink and curled into a ball when my back met the tiled wall behind me. “I'm sorry, I'm sorry…” I muttered to myself amidst the tears.
