At noon, the two sat on the sofa, eating their food and trying to fill their stomachs as much as possible.
“I’m going out for a bit later. You stay inside and don’t move around,” Lin Yuan said, having come to a conclusion. His zombie evolution system required humans as the medium for evolution, and only by being around large groups of people could he quickly accumulate evolution points. Once he joined the rescue team, there would be plenty of people for him to bite, and getting some food in the process wouldn’t be difficult.
"Why are you going out at a time like this?" Shen Rong immediately felt concerned, worried that Lin Yuan might leave her behind.
“To buy some oranges!”
With that, he grabbed the fire axe, opened the door, and left.
There were two people hiding on the second floor, but Lin Yuan didn’t bother them. He went straight to the first floor, avoiding the few zombies at the entrance, and headed outside. He deliberately avoided areas where the office building’s windows provided visibility, staying close to the walls as he moved toward a nearby supermarket.
Although the fire axe was decent in terms of damage, its attack range was too short, and it didn’t have enough intimidation factor against humans. Lin Yuan needed a new weapon. Ideally, a firearm would be the best option, but given that China had strict g*n control, obtaining one was almost impossible. Moreover, when the rescue team arrived, they might even mistake him for a rebel if he had one. After searching around, he only found some kitchen knives, watermelon knives, and fruit knives, none of which were suitable for his needs.
"Damn it. I guess strict regulations aren’t always a good thing. When the apocalypse hits, you can’t even find a tool to defend yourself."
These knives were fine for cutting fruit or vegetables, but they wouldn’t be effective against people. In the end, he picked up two large backpacks, filled them with high-energy food and purified water, and selected two sets of durable clothing.
Shopping without paying brought a strange sense of satisfaction. There were a few obvious signs of life in the supermarket’s warehouse, but it seemed relatively safe in there, with plenty of food. As long as they didn’t do anything reckless, they could survive for ten days or more.
Lin Yuan didn’t concern himself with the fates of others. After gathering his supplies, he avoided the zombies along the way and returned to the office building.
As soon as he unlocked the door with his key, he saw Shen Rong hurriedly coming out of the bedroom, looking flustered and with a slight flush on her face.
“You know what you look like right now?”
Lin Yuan set down the supplies and lay on the sofa, casually tossing an orange to Shen Rong.
“I just... well, you know…”
Shen Rong avoided his gaze, not offering any explanation, and began peeling the orange.
“You look like someone caught cheating at home, found red-handed.”
If Lin Yuan hadn’t been able to sense that there was no one in the bedroom, he might have actually thought along those lines.
“You’re the one cheating!” Shen Rong snapped, her face flushed with anger. Without thinking, she threw the orange peel at him.
But to Lin Yuan, the object seemed to slow down as it flew toward him. With a simple swat, he sent the peel flying back, landing it squarely on Shen Rong’s face.
“Enough messing around. Tonight might not be safe, so we’d better sleep in the same room,” Lin Yuan said as he grabbed the backpack and headed to the bedroom. The supplies he had just brought back from the supermarket hadn’t been sorted yet, and with such a heavy load, Shen Rong wouldn’t have been able to carry them for long anyway.
Seeing Lin Yuan enter the bedroom, Shen Rong quickly followed.
“The bed’s a bit messy. I haven’t had time to clean it up yet."
In the bedroom, Shen Rong was quickly gathering up the thin blanket on the bed, pulling it back and forth. Lin Yuan didn’t pay much attention to her as he dumped the contents of two backpacks onto the bed. Most of it was instant meat, compressed biscuits, or high-energy foods like chocolate.
"When the rescue team arrives tomorrow, we’ll definitely need to follow them to a safe place. Right now, it’s complete chaos, and I’m afraid food supplies will be scarce later. These things are all we’ve got," Lin Yuan said, sorting and categorizing the food. There were also small tools like lighters, folding knives, and other essentials.
"Where did you find all this stuff?" Shen Rong asked. The last time Lin Yuan brought supplies, it wasn’t much, and she hadn’t thought much of it, assuming he had scavenged from the office building. But the heap of food on the bed was far more than what one could find in an office building.
"I risked my life out there just to make sure you’d have something good to eat. What’s wrong with that?" Lin Yuan replied. He quickly finished organizing the items, packing a large backpack for himself and a smaller, lighter one for Shen Rong, which still contained enough food to last several days.
"Huh? What’s this?" Lin Yuan asked as he came across a small remote control while packing. Instinctively, he moved to press it.
"Don’t! Don’t touch that!" Shen Rong said urgently, looking as if she was afraid something terrible would happen.
"It’s not a remote bomb, is it? If I press it, will the whole building explode?" Lin Yuan joked. The more nervous Shen Rong looked, the more he wanted to press the button just to see what would happen. He deliberately chose the button labeled "Violence."
As soon as he pressed it, Shen Rong’s body stiffened, and she trembled, collapsing to the ground as if she was being attacked by something.
"Damn it! I’m out there risking my life for supplies, and you’re in here playing with electric toys?" Lin Yuan sneered. The remote in his hand had a nice texture and seemed high-end. There were five different settings on it, with the highest labeled "Violence," which suggested just how intense it could get.
Within seconds, Shen Rong couldn’t take it anymore. Her body slumped onto the bed, trembling uncontrollably. After several waves of spasms that left her almost convulsing, Lin Yuan finally turned off the remote.
"I can’t take it! Help!" Shen Rong cried out. The sudden stop left her feeling as if she were floating in a void, with no anchor to hold onto. She frantically clawed at the blanket, burying her head under it, but the soft fabric provided no comfort.
"What do you call me?" Lin Yuan asked, holding the remote as if he were holding her very life in his hands. A simple button press could control everything. Shen Rong, a dignified and confident company boss on the surface, had never revealed this side of her.
“Daddy,” Shen Rong muttered, blushing as she poked her head out from under the blanket. She only hesitated for a second before calling out in a way that would excite any man.
"I told you to call me master! Who the hell said we were playing taboo games here?" Lin Yuan said sharply. That one word from her made him immediately excited. He tossed aside the remote and replaced it with a real toy.
In the pressure of the apocalypse, most people would throw away societal norms. Who cared about emotional foundations or anything like that? While Lin Yuan didn’t consider himself an impulsive person, when the moment called for it, he could easily let loose.
"Wait, how come the marks on your body are gone?" Lin Yuan suddenly noticed that the bite marks from earlier had disappeared, and even the bruises were completely gone. He rubbed the skin, which was now smooth and tender without a trace of injury.
"I don’t know," Shen Rong stammered. "In the past, even a light touch would leave a mark for days, but now, somehow, my wounds heal within half a day without leaving a scar."
Before, Shen Rong would have hidden this from him, as her body’s mutation was her greatest secret. But now that she had been completely dominated, she had no energy left to keep it hidden.
Lin Yuan didn’t slow down his actions, using the opportunity to think. If he could have a zombie evolution system, it wasn’t so far-fetched for someone else to awaken a special constitution. Now, he didn’t need to hold back—he could bite all he wanted.
