Chapter Thirteen- A Shattered Trust

484 Words
The night after the threatening package had been delivered, silence hung heavy over the penthouse. Aisha couldn’t sleep—every creak, every gust of wind against the glass windows made her jolt upright, clutching her belly. Damian hadn’t left her side. He’d spent the night pacing the suite like a caged beast, phone glued to his ear, giving orders to his security team. But beneath his steely tone, Aisha caught the undercurrent of unease he tried so hard to mask. By morning, exhaustion dragged at her bones. She walked into the kitchen to find Damian already dressed, his tie knotted with precision, his jaw locked like stone. “You’re going to the office?” she asked softly. His eyes flicked to hers, stormy and unreadable. “I don’t have a choice. Kross is escalating. Pulling back now would only make me look weak.” Her throat tightened. “And what about us? What about the baby? I don’t feel safe here anymore, Damian.” For a moment, something flickered in his gaze—hesitation, guilt—but then it was gone, buried under his armor. “You’ll be safe. I’ve doubled security, moved surveillance inside the building. No one can touch you here.” “That’s not the same as being safe!” Her voice cracked. “I don’t just want cameras and guards, Damian. I want peace. A life where my child isn’t born into threats and enemies.” His jaw ticked. “You knew being with me came with risks.” She flinched as if struck. “No—I knew being with you came with a man who promised to protect me. I didn’t sign up for becoming a pawn in your war.” The words hung between them, sharp and cutting. Damian’s fists clenched at his sides, his control slipping for the briefest second. He turned away, gripping the counter so tightly his knuckles whitened. “I never wanted this for you,” he muttered hoarsely. “But walking away isn’t an option anymore. You and the baby… you’re leverage now. Kross made sure of that.” Tears stung her eyes. She hated that he was right, hated that she was trapped in a world she didn’t choose. “So what are we, Damian? Just another weakness for your enemies to exploit?” He turned then, his eyes blazing with a ferocity that made her breath hitch. “No. You’re the only thing that matters. That’s why I can’t let you go—even if it means dragging you into my darkness.” Aisha’s chest ached at his confession, raw and unguarded. She wanted to believe him, wanted to cling to that thread of vulnerability he rarely showed. But the shadow of the threat loomed larger than ever. And for the first time, she wondered if love alone would be enough to survive the war they were about to face.
