It takes every ounce of willpower I have to keep to the speed limit as I drive to Marina’s rescue. All I can think about is what her uncle will do to her once it reaches his ears that his psychological con-job hasn’t stuck. She’s a witness. He’ll kill her himself before she can go to the police.
That can’t happen.
By the time I reach their fancy stone villa, the sun has almost set. I know Marina must be home by now. Alone. Vulnerable. Carrying my child in her belly.
I wish I could have just told her up front about her uncle and what I suspected about her psychiatrist. But they set traps in her head to turn her away from the truth—even if it was right in front of her. I’m only lucky that she never mentioned meeting me.
