The Goodbye & New Beginnings

805 Words
The morning sun spilled over the campgrounds, golden and warm, but it did little to lift the lump in Mya’s throat. Today was the day they had to leave. The final month at camp had been unforgettable—filled with music, laughter, teasing glances, and that one perfect kiss that still sent shivers down her spine. She stuffed the last of her belongings into her suitcase while Sonya hummed a cheerful tune beside her. “Can you believe it’s over?” Sonya said, bouncing on the balls of her feet. “A whole month, and I’m going to miss it… but mostly, I’m going to miss you getting flustered every time Chris looks at you.” Mya groaned. “Sonya, please, it’s not funny.” “Not funny?” Sonya said, snatching Mya’s bag to carry it. “It was hilarious! But also… adorable. I’m going to miss you, Mya.” Mya smiled despite herself. “I’m going to miss you too. More than I realized.” Chris appeared by the bus, guitar slung over his shoulder. Mya froze, her heart skipping a beat. He gave her a small, controlled smile—warm, but not too revealing. “Ready to go?” he asked. His voice was calm, almost casual, but there was an unmistakable weight behind it. Mya nodded, swallowing hard. “Yes.” For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then Chris stepped closer, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “Take care of yourself, Mya,” he said softly. “Keep playing like this, and… don’t forget what we shared this month.” Her chest tightened. “I won’t,” she whispered. “You… you too.” He nodded once and gave a final, fleeting smile before walking toward the bus. Mya watched him go, a bittersweet ache lingering in her chest. The month had been perfect, but now it was over. The bus ride back to her hometown was filled with chatter, laughter, and Sonya’s endless teasing about Chris. Mya couldn’t help smiling, replaying the kiss over and over in her mind. --- A year later, the excitement of a new chapter filled the air. Mya had been accepted into the prestigious conservatory, and Sonya would be joining her. The thought of sharing a room with her best friend eased some of the nerves about this next step in her life. But before that, there was one final summer visit to the camp—a chance to see Chris again, or so Mya hoped. She arrived early, suitcase in hand, ready to soak in the familiar sights. The cabins, the lake, the practice halls—they were all the same. But something felt… different. Chris wasn’t there. Her heart sank. She asked around, and the staff confirmed he had moved on to other projects this year. Disappointment settled over her like a heavy cloud. She had hoped for another moment, another smile, another teasing remark. Instead, she was left with the memories of last year’s magic. “I guess he’s gone,” Sonya said, nudging her shoulder gently. “But hey… we’re going to the same conservatory! That’s amazing, Mya. We can room together, practice together, and make this next chapter even better.” Mya smiled, feeling a flicker of happiness despite the disappointment. “You’re right. I’m so glad you’re coming too. It wouldn’t feel the same without you.” When they arrived at the conservatory, their dormitory room was cozy and bright. Two twin beds sat side by side, with a shared desk in between, cluttered with music sheets and supplies. The window looked out onto a small courtyard, sunlight streaming in and illuminating the polished wood floor. “This is perfect,” Sonya said, flopping onto her bed. “We can stay up late practicing, gossiping, and of course, reminding each other how hopeless we are with boys.” Mya laughed, unpacking her belongings. “I can’t believe we’re finally here. It feels… real. Like we’re really starting this next chapter together.” They spent the rest of the day organizing their room, setting up music stands, and making plans for rehearsals and classes. There was excitement in the air, a fresh start, and the comfort of knowing they would face it together. Though Mya still thought of Chris—his teasing smiles, the way he had looked at her, the warmth of that perfect kiss—she knew life had moved forward. Conservatory life awaited: new challenges, new friends, and music that would push her to grow. And with Sonya by her side, she felt ready for anything. As she unpacked the last of her things, Mya looked out the window at the courtyard below. A breeze rustled the leaves, carrying a faint hint of possibility. She smiled to herself. This was only the beginning.
