Cracks in the Ice

The week dragged on with Chris sharper than ever. He demanded precision in every lesson, his critiques merciless, his tone cool and detached. But Mya couldn’t stop the pull. Every time he barked her name, every time his gaze pinned her in place, something inside her thrilled. He thought he was untouchable. But she knew—knew—there was something under that steel façade. She just had to find a way to make him slip. --- That Thursday, the conservatory hosted its student recital in the main hall. Mya had been chosen to perform a solo aria. Her nerves buzzed all day, but she refused to let them show. When she walked onto the stage, she caught sight of Chris in the audience—sitting rigid in the second row, his arms crossed, eyes fixed on her with a scrutiny that made her heart pound. Watch me, she thought as she drew in her first breath. Her voice soared, full and commanding. Every note carried her passion, her longing, her defiance. She wasn’t just singing; she was showing him. But halfway through, as she pushed into the aria’s highest passage, disaster struck. Her heel snagged on the stage’s uneven panel, and she stumbled. The audience gasped. Her throat tightened, panic flooding in. For a second, her voice faltered, the note breaking. And then—he was there. Chris was on his feet, faster than anyone else. His hands were firm on her arms, steadying her before she could fall. The world narrowed to the strength of his grip, the fire in his eyes. “You’re fine,” he said, his voice low, meant only for her. “Breathe. Again.” Mya’s chest heaved. His closeness burned, his command wrapping around her like a lifeline. She nodded, swallowing hard, and found her voice again. With Chris still at the edge of the stage, his gaze locked on her, she finished the aria—this time flawless, her voice ringing through the hall like pure flame. When the final note faded, the applause was thunderous. But Mya barely heard it. Her pulse raced too fast, her skin still tingling from his touch. --- Later, after the recital, she found him waiting in the shadow of the backstage hallway. “You could’ve been seriously hurt,” he said, his tone clipped, but his eyes betrayed something else—something raw, unsettled. Mya smirked, though her heart still hammered. “What’s this? Concern? From the cold, untouchable Professor Hale?” His jaw tightened. “Don’t make light of it.” She stepped closer, testing the boundary between them. “You caught me, Chris. You didn’t even hesitate. Almost like you—care.” His eyes darkened, and for a moment, she thought he might deny it. But instead, he exhaled sharply, like her words had struck too deep. “Don’t read into it,” he said finally, his voice rougher than usual. “You’re my student. It’s my job to keep you safe.” But his gaze lingered too long, the weight of it saying everything his words tried to deny. Mya tilted her head, her lips curving. “If it was just a job, you wouldn’t have looked at me like that.” Silence pressed between them, thick and electric. Finally, Chris stepped forward, closing the space so suddenly her back brushed the wall. His hand came up—not touching her, but close enough that she felt the heat radiating off his skin. “You have no idea what you’re playing with,” he said, his voice low, dangerous. “And if you keep pushing, you won’t like the consequences.” Mya’s breath caught. “Then why didn’t you let me fall?” she whispered. For the briefest heartbeat, his mask slipped. She saw it—the flicker of something fierce, something possessive. And then, just as quickly, it was gone. He stepped back, his face cold again, his tone sharp. “Because you’re not ready to burn.” With that, he turned and walked away, leaving her trembling against the wall, her body alight with the truth he refused to admit. --- That night, as she lay awake, Sonya groaned from her bed across the room. “You’re restless again. Let me guess—Professor Hale showed another flicker of humanity?” Mya hugged her pillow, her lips tingling with the memory of his nearness. “Just a flicker,” she admitted. Sonya rolled her eyes. “Careful, Mya. If you keep chasing him, you’re going to get scorched.” But Mya smiled in the dark, because she already knew—Chris Hale had cracks in his armor. And she was determined to pry them wide open.
