I wake to the smell of coffee and the sound of a blender. My head is fuzzy, my eyes swollen from my stupid crying episode the night before, and I’m…starving. I can’t remember the last time I had something to eat beside a microwave burrito from the Gas ’N Go and a Coke. I see the plastic bag that holds my clothes and reach for it without getting up. A tightness pulls in my side, and I remember my stitches. I try again, this time with more care, and then begin to rifle through it. I find what I’m looking for, roll off the couch, and stumble into the kitchen. Bear’s lying on the rug just outside the kitchen, looking innocent as if he’s been there all night and not curled up with me on the couch.
