We walked out of Cross Tower with nothing.
No security. No car waiting. No assistant.
Aiden had just quit. The man who owned half the city was now just... Aiden.
“Where do we go?” I whispered. The paparazzi were already outside.
“Home,” he said. But his jaw was tight.
Home wasn’t home anymore. The penthouse belonged to the company.
We ended up in a small hotel 2 hours later. Nothing fancy. Just a bed, a window, and us.
For the first time since the contract, there were no cameras. No board. No Vanessa.
Just silence.
Aiden sat on the edge of the bed and put his head in his hands.
“I failed,” he said. “My company. My family. You.”
I knelt in front of him. “You chose us. That’s not failure.”
He looked up. His eyes were red. The cold CEO was completely gone.
“I don’t know how to do this, Zuri. I don’t know how to be poor. I don’t know how to be a husband.”
“Then we learn together,” I said. I took his hand and placed it on my stomach. “Starting with them.”
The twins kicked. Right against his palm.
Aiden laughed. It was broken, but it was real.
“Okay,” he whispered. “We learn together.”
My phone buzzed. Unknown number.
“Check your email, Mrs. Cross. You’ll want to see this. - V”
The war wasn’t over.
