Chapter Nine - My Mate

Caspian POV Caspian's POV The lone rider wasn’t going to make it. I could see it in the wolf’s faltering steps, the way its body trembled with each stride. The beast was wounded, barely able to keep pace as the pack of wolves closed in. The rider, hunched low over the wolf’s back, didn’t seem in much better condition. I had been watching them for over an hour, tracking their desperate escape from my vantage point high on the mountain peak. The dense trees obscured them at times, but every so often, I caught a glimpse through the shifting shadows. Two dozen wolves pursued them, their movements relentless and coordinated. For the past two years, the border of Lykos had drawn me back like a moth to a flame. Each full moon, the invisible pull became impossible to resist. Tonight, though, the compulsion was stronger than ever—urgent, demanding. I hadn’t intended to stay long, just enough to appease whatever magic or curse tethered me to this place. But then I saw them. The rider and the wolf. The moment I laid eyes on them, I knew I couldn’t leave. As they broke into a clearing, the moonlight revealed the figure astride the wolf. A woman. Her cape slipped back, and hair that shimmered like liquid moonlight tumbled free. I inhaled sharply. I’d never seen hair like that before. It wasn’t just unique—it was captivating. The kind of beauty that made my chest tighten and my fingers ache with the strangest urge to touch it, to see if it was as soft as it looked. What was wrong with me? I descended the peak, my instincts screaming at me to get closer. If they could just reach the border, they’d be safe. But as I reached the invisible line that marked the edge of Katara, I froze. I couldn’t cross. None of us could. The curse that bound the Lycans to this land would not allow it. It wasn’t my concern, I told myself. Whatever happened on the other side was beyond my control. Yet my feet refused to turn away. I stayed rooted in place, watching, silently willing the woman and her wolf to escape. And then it happened. The wolf stumbled, and the woman was thrown to the ground. She rose slowly, facing the pack with defiance that was both foolish and admirable. My breath caught. This was it. There was no way they could fight off that many. I should leave. I couldn’t help her. But my eyes were drawn to the wolf. Its gaze locked with mine, a silent plea radiating from its tired, pained eyes. It wasn’t asking for its own safety—it was begging me to save her. Then the wind caught her hair as she rose from the snow, and her scent reached me. Jasmine, figs, and something utterly intoxicating filled the air, overwhelming my senses. My body stiffened, and Remus surged to the forefront of my mind, growling with need. I caught a glimpse of her as she stood, and my breath caught. Her long silver hair framed a delicate, heart-shaped face with piercing green eyes. Her full lips and elegant features struck me like a physical blow. She was beautiful—exotic and otherworldly. I needed to get closer, needed to touch her. The compulsion was primal and consuming, unlike anything I had ever felt. Remus pushed me forward, his growl reverberating in my mind. Stop, I tried to reason with him. We can’t cross into Lykos. You know what will happen. Remus didn’t respond, but he kept moving, driven by something deeper than reason. He rarely spoke these days, and his silence was maddening. I fought to regain control, managing to halt his advance just as the woman turned to face the line of soldiers pursuing her. Her voice rang out, defiant and fierce, as she confronted her attacker. I couldn’t make out the words, but I caught the mocking tone of the man leading the soldiers. His intention was clear: he wanted her for himself. Fury burned through me, and a low growl escaped my throat. Suddenly, an eclipse reached the moon, casting the clearing in eerie shadow and the woman was lifted into the air, suspended in a cocoon of shimmering starlight. Strands of light swirled around her, illuminating her with an otherworldly radiance. She looked like a goddess being forged, but I could see the pain in her expression. I stepped forward instinctively, driven by the need to protect her, to ease her suffering and Remus took control again, taking us across the border. The moment my feet touched Lykos, searing pain tore through my chest, and my strength began to wane. Turn back! I yelled at him. We’ll die if we stay here! But then she cried in pain, shifting our focus entirely to her. Her presence was magnetic, an irresistible force pulling us forward. The pain intensified with each step, spreading like fire through my veins, but I didn’t stop us. I couldn’t. I had to reach her, had to let her know she wasn’t alone. Her eyes locked onto mine then, and a gasp escaped her lips. The connection between us was immediate, visceral. Mate! Remus roared in my mind, his voice trembling with exhilaration. I stumbled, the agony in my chest making it hard to breathe. Lycans didn’t have mates. It wasn’t possible. Yet here she was, the bond between us undeniable. I collapsed to my knees, my vision blurring as the pain consumed me. I was dying, I knew it and she seemed to understand it to. Sadness was etched across her delicate features. I wanted to tell her that it was ok. That seeing her once and dying at her feet was enough for us. And it was. Resolve hardened in her eyes as one of the glowing ribbons of starlight surged into her chest, making her cry out. I reached for her instinctively, and the same ribbon connected to me, lifting me into the air beside her. A whisper filled the clearing, too faint to understand, as the ribbon bound us together. For a brief moment, I felt her—her strength, her determination, and the depth of her emotions. Then we both fell, the snow cushioning our landing. She scrambled to her feet, running to me, but the wolf—a male—blocked her path. I growled, fury surging through me. Remus roared in my mind, pacing and snarling. Mine. Move, or kill him. “Damian, it’s okay,” she said softly, her voice a balm to my frayed nerves. “He’s my mate.” The word sent a jolt through me. She called me her mate. Hope flared in my chest, fierce and undeniable. The wolf—Damian—reluctantly stepped aside, and she knelt beside me. Her touch was electrifying, tingles dancing across my skin as her fingers brushed my face. Her smile was hesitant, her emerald eyes searching mine. I reached up, tucking a strand of her hair behind her ear. The bond between us solidified at that moment, a connection unlike anything I had ever felt. “Mine,” I said, my voice rough but certain. “Mine,” she echoed, her voice trembling with emotion. I leaned closer, intent on claiming her lips, but movement in my peripheral vision caught my attention. A ball of fire hurtled toward us, and I acted on instinct, rotating us so her body was shielded by mine. The flames engulfed me, but instead of pain, there was only heat—a searing sensation that dissipated almost as quickly as it came. I stood, unscathed, turning to face the attacker with a vicious smile. They would pay for threatening her. They would all pay.
