Chapter 8

1041 Words
Irene barely noticed the cheers around her. The crowd’s excitement, the laughter, the whispers, they all blurred into one endless, meaningless noise. Her eyes stung. Her vision felt hazy, and a strange, heavy ache settled in her chest. The fire’s light flickered on Sebastian and Carris as they stood together, their bond shining bright for everyone to see. Every glance they exchanged, every subtle smile, was a dagger in her heart. She couldn’t look away, though she wanted to run. She wanted to disappear, to be swallowed by the earth so she wouldn’t have to see it, hear it, feel it. But she was rooted to the spot, frozen in a torment of disbelief. A small hand touched hers. “Irene…” She blinked, trying to focus. It was Zara, squeezing her hand gently. Irene barely registered her friend’s presence. Everything sounded muffled, as if the noise of the world had turned to static in her ears. “I… I can’t…” she whispered, her voice shaking. Zara’s grip became tighter, a silent anchor in the storm of emotions. Blinking hard, Irene turned to look at her friend. The world tilted slightly, her vision swimming with tears. She saw Zara’s bright eyes, full of hope and warmth, and felt an almost painful contrast to her own numbness. “Irene,” Zara said softly, her lips moving, but Irene couldn’t hear the words. They didn’t reach her. The minutes dragged. Every second felt like hours. Irene let her hand go. She couldn’t keep holding on. Not anymore. Her gaze wandered back to the circle. Simon stepped forward, confident and sure. He took Zara’s hand. She hesitated just for a moment, then the bond hit. The air seemed to shimmer around them. Their connection was undeniable, powerful, and immediate. Irene’s heart clenched painfully. They hugged, and then kissed. A rush of emotions hit her all at once. Happiness. Relief. Love. And a crushing, impossible sorrow that felt like it would break her apart from the inside. “Good for them,” she told herself, through gritted teeth. “Be happy for them.” But every beat of her heart reminded her of what she did not have. And then the sounds of excitement and celebration pulled her attention. Squealing voices, laughter, whispers, she turned her head slowly. Carris’ friends were talking amongst themselves, leaning close, pointing, laughing softly. She couldn’t catch every word. Everything was a blur, a chaos of noise and confusion. But she caught enough. “Can’t believe your boyfriend…” one said. “…I knew your love was strong enough…” another added. “Always knew you were meant for each other…” The words struck her like ice. Irene froze, her stomach twisting. Her vision blurred with tears. Her heart, already raw and bleeding, began to feel torn in pieces she had never imagined. It all began to make sense. The stolen glances. The smiles she had thought were just friendly. The moments she had believed were special, personal, meant only for her. None of it was real. Sebastian, Sebby had never loved her. Carris had always been there. Always. The way Sebastian had looked at her, the way he had touched her hand, the way he had reassured her it had been a performance. A lie. Every flutter of hope she had held onto for years had been in vain. Her hands trembled. Her knees threatened to give out. She tried to speak, but no sound came. The tears came faster now. Hot, stinging, unstoppable. They blurred the firelight, the wolves, everything. She sobbed loudly. Quiet sobs had no place here. She needed to release it. She needed to let the world hear her heartbreak. Irene’s chest heaved. Her vision swam with faces and lights. She realized something that made her sob even harder. She had been the only one loving. She had been the only one hoping. Everyone else had a bond. Everyone else had certainty. She had only belief. And belief had failed her. Her body shook with the force of the collapse, small and contained in the midst of the crowd, but enormous in its depth. No one could comfort her. No one could reach inside the hollow ache that now consumed her entirely. Her mind kept replaying moments that had seemed innocent. Every smile, every word, every laugh she had shared with Sebastian now felt like betrayal. And she had never noticed it. The weight of the realization pressed down on her until she felt crushed. She looked at Carris and Sebastian so close, so certain and felt a burning, piercing emptiness. Even the lanterns and the fire could not illuminate the darkness that had taken over her heart. Zara’s hand still rested lightly on hers. She could feel it, but she could not respond. Her friend’s comforting presence passed through her like warmth she could not hold. The sobs shook her from the inside out. Irene’s wolf stirred, confused, angry, hurt. Her wolf had expected safety, had expected love, had expected belonging. Instead, it had found betrayal, rejection, and emptiness. Her body trembled. Her world had shattered. The ceremony went on around her, bright with bonds forming, mates finding each other, joy spreading like wildfire through the pack. Irene felt none of it. She felt only the silence that had followed the storm of her hope. She had been left behind. Alone. And now, she understood, in a way that hurt far worse than any physical pain could: she had been the only one loving. And it was not enough. The sobs continued. Her shoulders shook. Her hands were trembling, still empty. The fire burned in the center of the clearing, but it could not reach her. The moon above watched silently, impartial, uncaring. Irene’s tears fell freely, her chest rising and falling with each broken breath. Her hope had been absolute. Her heart had been full. And now it was gone. Quiet devastation filled the spaces where joy should have been. And she let herself feel it. Fully. The world might continue to cheer, to celebrate, to see bonds being formed. But for Irene, tonight, there was only the sound of her own heartbeat and the echo of what she had lost.
