Chapter 6

The day of the mating ceremony arrived softly. Irene woke before the sun fully rose, her heart already racing as if it knew something important was coming. The air felt different, thicker, heavier, like the world itself was holding its breath. Tonight. She lay still for a moment, staring at the ceiling, listening to the quiet around her. Somewhere in the distance, a wolf howled softly, a low sound that faded into silence. She pressed a hand to her chest and breathed in slowly. Today was the day. When she stepped outside her room, the pack grounds were already awake. Wolves moved with purpose, voices hushed but excited. Final preparations were underway. Lanterns were being set in place, decorations adjusted, elders gathering near the clearing. Everything felt real now. As Irene walked toward the common hall, she saw Sebastian. He stood near the entrance, speaking briefly with one of the elders. He looked composed, calm, but when his eyes found hers, something flickered between them. Relief. He stepped toward her. “Hey.” “Hey,” she replied. They stood there, facing each other, words hovering between them. “You slept well?” he asked. She nodded. “Did you?” “Enough,” he said. Silence followed. Not the comfortable kind they usually shared. “I’ll see you later,” he said finally. “Yes,” she replied quickly, smiling. “Tonight.” He hesitated, then nodded. “Tonight.” He walked away before she could say anything else. Irene watched him go, her heart fluttering not with worry, but excitement. Tonight would explain everything. Tonight would answer questions she didn’t even realize she’d been asking. She shook off the strange feeling and headed inside. There was too much to do to dwell on small things. She spent the morning working through her duties quickly, her energy high. She cleaned, carried supplies, helped prepare food for the gathering later that evening. Everything felt lighter today, as if even the simplest tasks carried meaning. Time moved strangely too fast and too slow at once. By midday, she was done. For once, there was nothing else expected of her. Irene returned to her room to wash and change, her hands trembling slightly as she smoothed her dress. She hadn’t felt this way since she was a child waiting for something special. A knock sounded at her door. “Irene!” a familiar voice called. Her face lit up instantly. “Zara!” She opened the door to find her best friend standing there, smiling wide. Zara looked radiant sun kissed from travel, her hair styled loosely, confidence rolling off her like warmth. “I’m back just in time,” Zara said, pulling Irene into a tight hug. “I missed you,” Irene laughed, hugging her back. “How was your trip?” “Amazing,” Zara replied. “My mom wouldn’t stop fussing over me. But enough about that, today is your big day.” Irene felt her cheeks heat. “Our big day.” Zara grinned. “Come on. Let’s get you ready.” They sat together, helping each other prepare. Zara brushed Irene’s hair gently, chatting easily as she worked. “So,” Zara said casually, “Simon and I talked a lot during the trip.” Irene smiled softly. “About tonight?” “Yes,” Zara said, her tone confident. “We decided something.” “What?” Irene asked. “If fate doesn’t give us each other,” Zara said plainly, “we won’t accept it.” Irene froze slightly. “You won’t?” Zara shook her head. “We love each other. That’s enough for us.” “But what if—” “What if fate disagrees?” Zara finished. “Then fate can argue with itself.” Irene laughed softly, though something tightened in her chest. “You’re brave,” she said. Zara shrugged. “Love is a choice. Simon chose me. I chose him.” The words echoed uncomfortably. Irene thought of Sebastian. Of his smiles. His reassurances. She thought of how deeply she hoped. “That’s… beautiful,” she said. Zara studied her through the mirror. “You okay?” “Yes,” Irene replied quickly. “Just thinking.” “You and Sebastian will be fine,” Zara said easily. “Anyone can see how close you are.” Irene smiled, though envy stirred quietly in her chest. Zara had certainty. She had a love that spoke its name openly. Irene had hope. She said nothing more. As the sun began to set, excitement filled the air. Drums were brought out. The ceremonial fire was lit. Wolves began gathering, dressed carefully, scents sharp with anticipation. Irene stood beside Zara at the edge of the clearing, her heart pounding. This was it. She searched the crowd and found Sebastian across the clearing. Their eyes met. He smiled. Her breath caught. Everything else faded. Tonight would make sense of everything. She lifted her chin and stepped forward, believing fully, fiercely that fate would reward the love she had already given.
