The history class has always been a boring one but not this time. It was one of my best classes—He was taking the history class just like me. It was weird and unbelievable that I found him attractive. We only met once and I was already day dreaming about us together. I never believed in love at first sight but this chemistry proved it was real.
I felt Dave’s stare on my skin and when I looked back, I was right. His eyes were stone dead on me like I had Forcefully taken his kidney. He gave me an angry stare that made me think if dating him in the first place was a mistake.
But his reactions got nothing on me as my crush was in the same class as me. I knew Dave saw what was going on but I totally didn’t care about it. All I wanted was to get my crush’s attention to me — even if it meant answering questions in class. I didn’t mind failing —I was never good in history.
As the teaching went on, I was lost and all I thought was how to get his name and properly talk with him. I smiled sheepishly at myself while turning back to get a glimpse of him when our eyes clocked.
I felt my heart drop in my stomach. I didn’t expect him to look in my direction. I knew my cheeks were a bit red but I didn’t know how to control my excitement. It made the little girl in me scream for joy.
I never thought I would blush over a guy the way I did. His presence made me shy and I didn’t care about hiding it.
“Maybe he finds me attractive,” I thought to myself.
I’ve had guys look at me but not the way he did. It felt different— like a fairytale. A commoner noticed by a prince .
I was still in my day dream when Maya called to my attention through a text. I looked down on my phone and it read “ Dave’s watching,” I smiled and waved it.
The class ended well and my unnamed crush noticed my presence. That was enough to fill the lonely gap inside me. I didn’t expect my first day in school to turn out beautiful and to crown it all— I had a crush and butterflies in my belly.
I needed a solitary time for myself to reflect on how my day went and journal it down.
I picked my side bag and left for my secret place. A place I can talk about in my Diary and that was no other place than the cemetery— where my parents were buried side by side.
It made me feel closer to them and also gave me the peace I wanted. It helps me express myself.
I walked down from school and branched to my destination. It was quiet and greenish. I passed the sign post which read “ respect the dead” immediately I heard a crow. I didn’t put it into consideration because I wasn’t scared.
I sat in front of my parents grave. I stared at it for a while before pulling out my journal from my bag and began to write.
Dear
What did you think about today? I made it through, right? I genuinely smiled again. It was nice seeing my friends and sincerely it was nice having them around. By the way, I had a crush on a guy I know nothing about — not even his name and it felt nice knowing he felt the same way.
Thank you so much for being here and helping with my journey. Today no one noticed my pain and I miss my parents.
I wasn’t done writing when I heard the crow again. I looked up in the sky and saw numbers of them flocking around. It was unusual and it made me wonder what must have triggered their presence.
My heart raced and I decided to pack and leave but my eyes came in shock as a crow stood beside me when I was about to leave.
Unlike birds, it stood strongly ignoring the attempts I made to chase it away and it looked directly into my eyes. I didn’t want to over think it but deep down, I knew I wasn’t safe being alone.
I felt a strange presence but when I turned my back to be sure I wasn’t hallucinating, I saw a shadow clocking around and the bright day was becoming a little darker. In a heartbeat I picked a race.
Unfortunately I tripped on a stone and fell to the ground. I stood immediately looking back to be sure I wasn’t followed
“Are you okay?” I heard a voice very close to me and my heart froze. I didn’t hesitate to turn and it was him— my new crush in school.
“How did you get her? I was alone,” I asked immediately. That was the only question that came to my mind and meeting him was the strangest thing that ever happened to me.
“I’m sorry if I scared you, I have past relatives I visit,” he spoke without emotion on his face.
“Were you sulking me? I never met you here before,” I proceeded to ask.
He shrugged.
“No, I wasn’t,” he replied, but this time he was smiling.
“Oh!I was scared by a crow and it took me unaware so I had to run,” I explained.
He nodded. “ You are fine,” and for the first time, he reached for my shoulder and tapped on them before taking them back to himself.
“ I’m Lena,” I introduced, stretching out my hand.
“I’m Ethan,” he replied, shaking me back
The silence after the introduction was a bit awkward and I noticed a silver ring on his finger.
“Nice ring,” I commented.
He nodded and smiled. He didn’t look like a shy type but assumed he liked to be quiet.
He gave me back the same energy I wanted. We stood at the spot and spoke about school. He sounded sweet and mature. His voice was deep and I watched his Adam’s Apple move in rhythm as he spoke. It was so smooth that I forgot my fears and what chased me.
I noticed his eye balls grew bigger, but I thought I might have imagined it and immediately he said I was hurt, pointing down on the wound on my leg.
I didn’t notice it until he called to my attention.
“I might have gotten it from the fall,” I responded, bending to take a close look at it but before I could look up— he was nowhere to be found.
“Ethan!” I called out, but no one responded.
I wondered if he was shy or had an emergency for leaving the way he did. I didn’t know when he left and he was fast… he didn’t even say a good bye.
He just vanished from nowhere. I took a deep breath and went home.
