Chapter 2: The Rejection

1038 Words
My footsteps echoed through the hallway as I walked away from the room. Away from Lucas. Away from Selena. Away from the life I had spent years dreaming about. Every step felt heavier than the last. My chest ached so badly that it felt impossible to breathe. Yet somehow, I kept moving. Tears blurred my vision, but I refused to let them fall. Not anymore. I had cried enough for people who did not deserve my tears. The sounds of celebration grew louder as I approached the grand hall. Laughter. Music. Conversations. Everyone was still waiting for the mating ceremony. No one knew that the future Alpha was currently in bed with another woman. My sister. A bitter laugh almost escaped my lips. What a joke. The moment I stepped into the hall, dozens of faces turned toward me. The conversations stopped. People smiled warmly. Some congratulated me. Others wished me happiness. The kindness only made the pain worse. Because they did not know the truth. At the front of the hall stood Alpha Victor Ravencrest and his mate. Lucas's parents. Their expressions relaxed when they saw me. "Aria," Luna Evelyn said softly. "Where is Lucas? Everyone is waiting." The question sliced through my heart. For a moment, I could not answer. Then I saw movement near the entrance. Lucas. And Selena. They had followed me. A wave of whispers immediately spread through the crowd. People noticed how close they were standing. People noticed Selena's guilty expression. People noticed Lucas's tense face. The atmosphere shifted instantly. Something was wrong. Everyone could feel it. Lucas started walking toward me. His eyes were fixed on mine. "Aria." I ignored him. The crowd watched silently. Waiting. Confused. Curious. Alpha Victor frowned. "What is going on?" No one answered. The silence became unbearable. Then Lucas took another step forward. "Let's discuss this privately." The audacity. The sheer audacity. After everything he had done, he wanted privacy. No. I was done protecting him. Done protecting Selena. Done pretending. I slowly turned to face the crowd. Hundreds of eyes stared back at me. My heart pounded. This was it. There was no going back. "Tonight's mating ceremony is canceled." Gasps erupted throughout the hall. Shock flashed across every face. Alpha Victor stepped forward. "What do you mean canceled?" I swallowed hard. The pain returned with full force. But so did my determination. I pointed directly at Lucas. "He cheated on me." The room exploded. Whispers spread like wildfire. People stared at Lucas in disbelief. Others looked toward Selena. The truth was beginning to dawn on them. Luna Evelyn's face turned pale. Alpha Victor looked furious. Lucas clenched his jaw. "Aria." I ignored him again. "He has been sleeping with my sister." The hall fell silent. Dead silent. Nobody moved. Nobody spoke. Selena looked as though she wanted the ground to swallow her whole. Good. For once, she could feel embarrassment instead of me. Lucas glared at me. But I wasn't finished. "And she is carrying his child." The reaction was immediate. Shocked gasps echoed around the room. Several pack members looked horrified. Others looked disgusted. The Alpha family stood frozen. Unable to process what they had just heard. Luna Evelyn stumbled backward. Tears filled her eyes. "No." But it was true. Every word of it. Lucas stepped forward. "Enough." His voice carried authority. The authority of the future Alpha. Normally, people would obey instantly. Tonight, nobody moved. Nobody looked away. Because everyone wanted answers. Everyone wanted the truth. And for the first time in his life, Lucas had nowhere to hide. Alpha Victor's expression darkened. "Tell me she's lying." Lucas remained silent. That silence was answer enough. The Alpha's face turned red with fury. A growl rumbled through the hall. Several wolves instinctively stepped back. I had never seen him look so angry. "You disgrace this family." Lucas lowered his gaze. Meanwhile Selena looked terrified. As she should be. For years she had stolen little things from me. Clothes. Jewelry. Attention. But this time she had stolen something much bigger. And now everyone knew it. My gaze met hers. For the first time, there was no triumph in her eyes. Only fear. Good. Because this was only the beginning. Suddenly my wolf stirred. The bond. The mate bond. Even damaged by betrayal, it still existed. A painful thread connecting me to Lucas. A reminder of everything I had lost. Everything he had destroyed. I hated it. I hated feeling connected to him. I hated feeling his presence. I hated everything about him. Lucas looked at me. For a brief moment, regret flickered in his eyes. Too late. Far too late. "I reject you." I spoke the words loudly enough for the entire hall to hear. A collective gasp filled the room. The mate bond trembled. Pain shot through my chest. My wolf cried out. The rejection was real. Final. Irreversible. Lucas's eyes widened. The crowd watched in stunned silence. Nobody expected a rejection. Not from me. Not tonight. But I was finished. Finished loving him. Finished believing in him. Finished giving him power over my life. The bond snapped. Pain exploded through my body. I nearly collapsed. A cry escaped my lips. Then it was over. The connection was gone. Gone forever. For the first time in years, I felt free. The emptiness hurt. But freedom felt stronger. Lucas staggered backward. His face was pale. As though he had only just realized what he had lost. Good. Let him suffer. I had suffered enough for both of us. Without another word, I turned and walked toward the exit. Nobody stopped me. Nobody dared. As I reached the doorway, a powerful scent suddenly drifted through the hall. The scent was unfamiliar. Dangerous. Commanding. Every wolf in the room instantly lowered their heads. Even Alpha Victor. A chill ran down my spine. Then a deep voice echoed from the entrance. "Interesting." The single word silenced the entire hall. I slowly looked up. And for the first time in my life, I came face to face with the Alpha King. His dark eyes locked onto mine. And something about the way he looked at me made my wolf freeze. As though fate itself had just changed direction.
