CHAPTER 17: THE BOOK – Alexa’s POV

1358 Words
As we all said goodnight and went to bed, I opened my bedroom door and a chill went down my spine and I noticed the window was open. I hadn’t opened it and by the looks of my room no one had cleaned it, so it surely hadn’t been housekeeping. Something felt wrong so I quickly retrieved the book Nana had given me and went down stairs in the game room. Thankfully it was empty, so I sat down on the sofa and started reading. I realized the book was a journal! If this was real, a human named Carl had tried to become a werewolf to be with the woman he loved who he had found out was a werewolf. He described all the process exactly as Nana had told me:   “ 26 April  1954 She is the love of my life and I never thought that after the war I would so easy find happiness. I want to be with her for the rest of my life and so does she. I have decided. Tomorrow I am going to the temple. I hope I’m worthy.”    “ 28 April 1954 I did it! I’m a werewolf! It’s amazing. I went to the temple of the moon goddess asking to join the werewolf kind in order to be with the love of my life. She said that she would leave my fate in the hands of the wolf spirit world.    As soon as I became one with a spirit wolf, three tattoos showed up on my back: three black empty circles. Three challenges in three weeks. I have to find out more about what these tasks are… I feel so full of energy, I can’t wait to shift again.”     “ 29 April 1954, I mated with the love of my life and I mark her too. She’s next to me sleeping now and looks so peaceful. I didn’t tell her about the challenges…  After the mating and marking, one of my tattoos changed, inside the circle appeared a heart with two wolves howling to the moon, beautiful. I guess being able to love is the first challenge. One done, two to go.”   “ 01 May 1954, I challenged Luke for the title. Tomorrow we will battle.” I will not let him take away my mate. I don’t care who the hell he is, she wants to stay will me and she will. I will take his title away and I will lead the pack. Everyone will respect me and she will always be safe. That’s all I care about.    I couldn’t stop reading his journal. It was full of details about him being a wolf, his mate, their Alpha who wanted her even if they weren’t mates. I arrived at the end and realized that he only had described one challenge: love. But the other two? Nothing. Did he make it? Did he die? It didn’t say.  How was I supposed to do this if I started the process not knowing what to expect? I decided I needed to talk to Nana tomorrow and see if there was a second journal. If this was true and not fictional, it could be my safety ticket, I could become one of the pack and stay here forever.   I must have fallen asleep again in the game room like the night before, because noises from the kitchen woke me up, what time was it? I looked at the clock on the wall and saw it was 4.30am. Again? What is wrong with these people?! I got up and dragged my feet to the kitchen to see who would be so weird to wake up so damn early. I found Lucy with a cup of coffee in one hand and a protein bar in the other. She was dressed in her gym gear. “Morning” a said with a groggy voice. “Oh! Hi Alexa! What are you doing up? Did I wake you?” she asked sipping her coffee. “Uhm I think I fell asleep in the game room and then I heard noises here. What is a girl your age doing awake? Aren’t you like supposed to sleep till late and make your parents yell at you for it? Or was that just me?” I asked chuckling, while poring myself a cup of coffee, fighting really hard to keep my eyes open. “I usually do but I want to practice my moves before general training today. I’m a cheerleader and I really want to be good at it.” She said grinning. “Cool! I love to dance and music, it just takes your mind off of everything.” I said still trying to stay awake. “Yeah exactly! Do you want to come?” she asked me eagerly, sounding so chipper. “Sure. Do you have something I can wear?” I asked yawning.   Lucy lent me a pair of shorts, a sports bra and a baggy top and we went to the gym. It was still dark out, but we told the guards at the main entrance where we were going. The gym, which I had been yesterday was actually pretty much in front of the pack house down the main road. As expected, no one was there so we had the floor all to ourselves. She took out her phone and showed me a video of the moves and the routine her team wanted to do and it looked really fun. She plugged her phone the gym’s sound system and music started to play really loud which helped me wake up. We started stretching and warming up, which led to practice. We repeated over and over the routine, trying to improve our moves and to sync our steps. After a while we started dancing like we were at a club and being silly, we laughed so hard that at one point I felt tears down my cheeks. Time flew by so quickly, we didn’t even notice that people were slowly coming in the gym until James arrived and started dancing with us without hesitation. He was so funny, he even tried twerking but failed miserably, which only made us laugh harder. Oliver arrived too and joined in, showing us some really great breakdance moves that made us all cheer. Other people I hadn’t met before, but were friends of Oliver and Lucy, joined in and started dancing and jumping.  Everything was going great and the gym sounded more like a disco, until the music was turned off. James obviously shouted at no one in particular: “Buzzkill!” A female voice yelled: “What the hell is going on? Why are my cheerleaders jumping like monkeys?” I realized the woman talking was the one that had flirted with Eric a few days ago at the ice cream shop. Jessica AKA Miss Big t**s. She looked at me with disgust and stated: “You. This was you wasn’t it?” I don’t like being insulted for no reason, so I replayed accordingly: “Excuse me? Who the h**l do you think you are to be talking to me like that? You don’t even know my name. We were just having fun.” She scoffed and said: “You dance like a slut.” I smiled widely and answered calmly: “At least I can dance properly without feeling the need to show my breasts to everyone.” I noticed that I had struck a chord because she started to look angry and said: “What?”. I kept going: “You heard me”. I turned to James who looked amused and intrigued by the bickering and I asked him: “So when does general training start?”. If you really want to get someone rattled up the best thing to do is to ignore them after shutting them down. Thing is, it’s not the best course of action when their werewolves. In fact, my comment was maybe too much because next thing I know she was transformed in her wolf and jumping on me. Thankfully James grabbed me and threw me backwards making Jessica’s wolf miss me by an inch. I was gaining my breath back, when an ear-piercing howl made everyone kneel to the floor, even Jessica’s wolf.
