CHAPTER 12: THE LEGEND – Alexa’s POV

I began walking to the pack house but then remembered Eric’s grandmother’s words. She had invited me to go and talk to her and since I didn’t have anything better to do, I decided to go and visit her. I used to visit my nanna every time I could when I was young, Eric was so lucky to have her still alive despite her old age.  I looked around for someone to ask for directions and found a group of guards chatting, so I went up to them and asked politely: “Excuse me, could you please tell me where the Alpha’s grandmother lives? She invited me for tea, but I don’t know where to find her.” One of them looked at me with pure disgust and snarled: “You’re the human that we are stupidly protecting.” “So, you think your Alpha’s decision is stupid?” I mocked, putting him in a difficult position. He started to look flushed and irritated and then a woman answered kindly: “I’ll take you, I have had enough of these idiots anyway”. When we were out of ear site she said: “You really do like to provoke people who could easily lose their patience don’t you huh?” I huffed: “People keep telling me that… I just don’t like it when people say i***t stuff” “I’m Helen, one of the packs guards and you are?” she asked. “Alexa White, pleasure” I said, putting out my hand. She shook it and smiled: “Here we are” she said pointing at a beautiful little cottage with lots of flowers in the front garden. “Thanks a lot, see you around” I said smiling.  I knocked on the door, and a voice yelled: “Come in! It’s open!” “Ms. Blackhood? It’s Alexa White, we met this morning in the conference room remember?” I yelled back opening the front door. I went inside and smelled biscuits, the house was small but cozy, with lots of paintings on the walls. “You made it! Please take a seat, I’m just preparing the tea!” she yelled back.   I sat on the sofa and waited patiently. After a few minutes, the same old lady I met this morning, came into the living room with a tray filled with various types of sandwiches, biscuits and tea. “Please enjoy you looked hungry before” she said sitting in a chair opposite from the sofa. “Thank you, you’re too kind” I said while poring the tea in two cups. “I knew you would come” she stated smiling “the only ones who believe in legends are the crazy and the desperate. Me and you” she said chuckling while picking up her cup of tea. I looked at her and said grinning: “Or the brave ones”. “I like you” she said picking up a biscuit.   “Ms. Blackhood...” I began saying after finishing eating a delicious ham sandwich.  “Please call me nanna, everyone does, I don’t even remember my actual name” she interrupted smiling. “Ok nanna, is there actually a way for me to become a werewolf?” I asked going straight to the point.   She looked at me seriously and asked: “Would you like to?”. “Yes” I stated putting a hand in front of my mouth since I was chewing on my third sandwich.  She leaned back sipping her tea and asked: “Why?” I answered sincerely: “Who wouldn’t? You get to experience life differently, you are able to defend yourselves and others without being hopeless and you get a real chance at true love knowing straight away that your mate is made for you.” “I knew as soon as I saw you, you could have a chance, that you have all the right characteristics and could become a chosen. The legend of the chosen narrates of an ancient way for humans to become werewolves. Let me explain. A werewolf is made of one soul divided into two halves: the human and the wolf. When a werewolf is born, the moon goddess creates and assigns a wolf to them, that will reveal itself when one is ready, usually between 5-10 years old, in order to develop together and become one. Our thoughts may seem divided into two, but in reality, it is always one soul and one mind speaking. To simplify, one could see the wolf half as one’s wild and primitive side.  When a werewolf dies, the two halves will collide as one and will go and live in peace with the moon goddess as a spirit. Now, knowing this we can move on to the Legend part: If a human officially asks the moon goddess to become a werewolf, she will ask these spirits if one of them wants to join you and therefore became your wolf half.   However, there are is always a catch.  First of all, if the moon goddess does not see you as worthy of being a werewolf, she will kill you for disturbing her peace. Second, if the moon goddess does see you worthy but no wolf spirits choose you, you will die for the horrible pain of rejection.   If everything goes according to plan: the moon goddess does see you worthy and a wolf spirit chooses you, you will become a werewolf. Your soul will be completed by the wolf spirit who chose you.  However, in order to remain a werewolf forever, you and your new half will have to complete three challenges, to demonstrate the moon goddess that you and your new wolf half are truly meant to be one soul in one body.   If you complete these three quests, in the amount of time she requests, the moon goddess will ask both you and your wolf spirit too officially choose each other forever. If you both agree, you are a werewolf forever, but if one half refuses, the both perish and die.”   “Are you serious?” I said blinking and continued: “I’m sorry let’s say that I believe that the Legend is real. So, all I have to do is:  1.     Ask a goddess to become a werewolf, hoping she says ok otherwise I die; 2.     Hope that a wolf spirit chooses me, because otherwise, again, I die; 3.     Complete 3 challenges as a werewolf with this new part of my soul. 4.     After all that, I have to hope that the wolf I spent my days doing challenges with still wants to be with me, as me” I summarized in disbelief.   “Exactly” Nana answered nodded calmly, blowing gently on her hot tea. “Simple” I muttered. She put her cup of tea on the table, got up and picked up a book from one of the shelves behind her. She handed it to me saying: “Here, read this, it will explain what I said to you. You better get going now or they will start wondering where you are.” I simply nodded still thinking. “I think you have a chance at this, think about it, I’m here when you’re ready. See you soon.” She said smiling at me as she picked up her cup of tea and headed in another room, leaving me alone.
