Endangered Mate

Beau pov-

as we where walking past the car park at the rear of the club, I heard a muffled sound, like a scream from the employee's park lot that pulled me from my thoughts, It was probably nothing, but with all attacks in the area, we had to check it out. so Dominic, Shane and myself silently entered the car park keeping to the shadows. when we heard a terrified female voice.

the sound of fear in that voice made ice form in my chest. looking to Dominic and Shane I signaled for Shane to loop around and come in from the east as I would continue to advance from the west and signaled to Dominic to provide us cover from the roof of the club. as Shane and Dominic broke off to get in to position.

My first instinct was to run to her, but after almost 80 years of hunting i made myself move slowly into the car park to assess the situation before I acted on it. I almost forgot all of my years of training when I saw her hanging off the shoulder of a man, he was huge, at lest 7ft tall with pointy ears and he was definitely part ogre. to the left stood a shifter of some kind and in front of the girl stood a demon. I was suddenly filled with a rage that burned through my body, awakening something dark and feral within me.

taking two deep breaths to calm myself, I had to have a clear head. If we were going to make it out of this alive.

taking a step forward it was time to make my presence known,

“Now now, that is no way to treat a lady.”

The demon spun to face me. moving to the side blocking my view as the man carrying the girl, started to walk off in the distance.

“you are very brave or just stupid, my friend, but you will move on if you know what’s good for you.” snarled the demon with hatred in his eyes.

“I'm the kinda person who doesn't follow orders well, especially from a demon.” i replied in a voice laced with rage the corner of my lips twitching with a hint of a smug smile.

the demon froze and quickly recovered from his shock .

I carried my sword and had knifes strapped to my thighs.

the demon stiffened and let out a hiss at me. " Nephilim!” anger and what sounded like fear crept into his voice

i chuckled, "so you know what I am," i said as more of a statement then a question. “I see there is no need for introductions then. Good. I hate to waste time.”

I laughed, standing calmly, a calm I didn’t feel.

"see thats the problem with your generation, No patience.

you know, you nephilim, are like rats, I really wish I knew how to kill you. But no rush. Let's take our time...relish the moment". said the demon as a malicious smirk spread across his lips.

“come on now that's not very nice, and to think I was considering to let you live?”

I said lightly as I took a step toward him.

noticing a bright flash of light some where behind the demon, I new Shane had just got their in time to intercept his comrade.

distracted as I was by Shane's arrival. Sloppy Beau, I cursed myself clamping my jaw. I hadn’t been thinking straight ever since I’d met that girl. I failed to notice the shifter to my left, going around to flank me from behind.

with the demon at my front and the shifter at my back. Before I could move

in, the shifter advanced on me from behind with a clawed hand raised he rushed me.

keeping my face impassive. I met his challenging stare. as he advanced I spun bringing my sword down, laying open his shirt and slicing in to his back separating his spin as he past. He screamed in agony collapsed to the ground trying to crawl away. as I advance on him to finish him off.

the demon came at me in that moment, from the side not with a physical attack but a metaphysical attack.

with a blast of black raw energy i was launched through the air, I lost the grip on my sword as it fell from my hand and skidded across the ground as my back slammed against the parked car . I was back on my feet in seconds, ready for more. He was faster than I expected.

but I was even faster, using my own speed, to dodge the psi ball he tossed at me before i barreled into him like a ragging bull. he must have braced for it but still didn’t have time to avoid impact.

his back hit the wall of the club hard enough i heard bones breaking, a few ribs I think. He fought to get his hands around my throat.

the demon managed to bang my head against the hard, brick behind him. A growl spilled between my lips. with my sword long gone, I reached to my thigh and withdrew one of my blades thrusting it in to his side. A scream tore from him as he tried to remove the blade that was embedded in his side.

as I slowly retreated, keeping my eyes on the demon he finally ripped the blade from his flesh.

he started chuckling, " You're gonna have to try a whole lot harder than that if you want to defeat me but i do have to say...this knife of yours...it's an exquisite piece."

We squared off, each successfully blocking the other’s attacks.

" Well, go on. Why don't you try some of your mojo on me now, hotshot?" I said mockingly.

i was still mocking him, when he slapped me with another surge of power. It threw me on my ass, giving him the time to follow up with a kick to my face.

he was leaning over me, holding a psi ball ready. he hit me with the roiling black ball of energy.

“the order wants the girl, they want her bad. we will get her the order will never stop" he taunted with a sneer.

as I tightened my grip on another one of my knives I swung my arm and stabbed it straight through the muscle of his shin,

i took advantage of the opportunity and i brought both my hands together and smashed them like a giant fist into his face. I bet he saw stars. he hit the ground hard.

the girl's scream tore my eyes away from him, I looked to my right to see a blur as someone past me.

my only thought now was getting to my mate.

a coughing, cackling sound drew my attention back to the demon with a malicious grin he said

“Flint is going to have so much fun with her. He loves pretty young things".

Enraged, I struck at him again. as I raised my fist to strike him again I sensed movement to my left I looked up to see Shane with his sword and a man I didnt recognize approaching, looking back at the demon a smirk lifting my lips I said

"Well, it Looks like the devil is on my side tonight." i laughed."

"she can't run, Nephilim. Not from the order. we may not have her now or next week but she will be ours."

he said with conviction, slowly black smoke seemed to rap itself around him as he slowly faded from site until I was was holding nothing but air. as I got up and swepted my eyes around the car park I saw the demon nealing next to his shifter comrade rapping his arms around him disappearing in to the same black cloud and then he was gone.

I looked across the car park when my eyes landed on the women laying unconscious on the ground. moving toward her, lifting her from the ground,

I held her against my chest as I breathed hard to maintain my control. The feel of her soft curves against mine awoke something other than a protectiveness inside me. In that moment, I didn’t want to ever let her go.

“JJ!” the man dark shoulder length haired yelled while his booted feet hit the ground. He ran to us. reminding me we weren't alone.

"JJ" I let the her name roll off my tongue as if I could taste it. a smile tugging the corners of my mouth

as he got closer he reached out his arms for her. “how is she?” I made no move to hand her over. “She unconscious, but she’s okay.” The man let out a harsh breath. “ thank you... for everything.” He said reaching for her again. “You can give her to me.” The loving way he looked at her made me want to crush her to my chest. There was no way I was handing my… life mate to another male, even if he was her friend.

as I held her I inhaled her scent it was a mixture of ocean breeze and forest rain. Never had I liked those scents, but on her the scent was hypnotic and sweet all at the same time.

My eyes moved to her lips, and I had to resist the urge to taste them.

She looked so innocent, and I would have done anything to have guarded her from the evil she’d encounted tonight. Her lack of experience in that kind of situation proved she was no hunter. she would have an even bigger shock when she found out what she was.

I reluctantly placed her in his outstretched arms, and then I cursed myself for the sudden loss I felt.

I should be with Dominic and Shane trying to tracking down the group that where involved in the attack, not standing here acting like a school boy with a case of puppy love.

“Thank you again,” her friend said in a rush.

He held JJ like she might break if handled too roughly. walking over i scooped up my sword and sheathed it, then started walking towards the east end of the clubs parking lot.

“get JJ home now,” I barked over my shoulder.

“Where are you going?” the dark haired man asked

“Hunting.” I said as I ran out of the car park without looking back.

I rang Shane to get their location, he said he and Dominic had pick up the trail on Spitfire Dr but lost it again.

I swore softly. I should have handed JJ over to her friend and then gone after the car.

Any other hunter would have done this job better than I had tonight.

I wasn’t used failing, and I didn’t like it one bit.

My mood was stormy as I started back to the vehicle 3 blocks away

But instead of going down the side street of the club, I stood in the shadow across from the club, where I could watch JJ and her friends, with out being seen. She was conscious and sitting on a bench with the vampire and shifter on either side of her.

My gut twisted when I saw how confused and scared she looked, but there was nothing I could do for her now. I’d find out where she lived and try to convince her of what she is and that she would be safer at one of our communities.

It was better that way. I watched them stand and walk towards a gray holde astra parked on the street in front of the club.

I will take down the license plate as they drive past me.

JJ and the dark-haired vampire got in the car. The small blonde shifter stood outside the vehicle and made a quick phone call.

once The blonde woman was done, she placed the phone back in her pocket and got into the back of the car.

I waited for them to get moving, but After a few minutes, worry for her began to niggle at me. Why hadn’t they left? Was she hurt? She’d looked fine sitting on the bench and as they’d made their way to the car, but there was no knowing how tonight had affect her.

Before I thought about what I was doing, I emerged from the shadows and headed toward the car. The vampire jumped out of the car and stepped in front of me before I reached the vehicle.

“I thought you said you were going hunting,” the dark-haired vampire said.

“I did then I came back.” He scowled. I looked past him at the two girls coming towards us. She was pale, but otherwise she looked uninsured, and I couldn’t help but admire her backbone.

“Hello again. You seem to have recovered quite nicely from the events of the night.”

“Matty? Do you know this man?” I raised an eyebrow at her, Matty shook his head. “i dont know him, I’ve never seen him before.”

“But you've heard this Nephilim before right? What does it mean?” she asked looking at her friend.

“Nephilim, it what and who I am” I said, drawing her attention back to me.

“And you hunt demons and ogre's?”

“I hunt a lot of things.” I looked her in return, studying her.

I could see she was still shaken by the attack, but she wasn’t at all intimidated by the sight of an armed hunter.

She didn't seem satisfied with my answer.

“What about your friends from the club? are they hunters, too?"

i didn't realize she had noticed Shane and Dominic in the club, it surprised me she could remember see their faces amongst the crowd.

“We should leave this place .” the vampire said.

“You live in Willo Falls?” I asked. The three of them nodded their heads.

the vampire gently took her arm. “We need to get out of here.” He tugged her gently toward the car, and I stayed where I was, feeling a mixture of relief and loss. I shook my head to try and clear it.

the mate bond shouldn't be affecting me like this so soon.

It made me feel weak and vulnerable, and I didn’t like it.

JJ pulled her arm away from her friend and grasp and turned back toward me. “Thank you…for helping me . If you hadn’t come I don't want to think about what would have happened to me…” Her voice shook, and it looked like she was fighting back tears.

Her apple green eyes met mine, and I felt myself falling into their depths. My protective instincts rushed forward and I had the urge to pull her to me and wrap her in the protection of my arms. I stoped myself before I took a step forward . What the hell was wrong with me?

I needed to put distance between us. I should not be entertaining any thoughts of holding her. The sooner she got out of here, the better. “I'm just doing what I was trained to do, nothing more.” I regretted my cold words as soon as they left my mouth, especially when hurt and confusion crossed her face. “Oh….. well, thank you,” she said quietly before she turned away walking towards her friends. I watched her walk to the car, waiting for her to turn and look at me. But she got in the car, as if I didn’t exist. Probably for the best.

I melted back into the shadows and watched them drive away.

i slipped my phone from my pants pocket and, snapped a photo of the license plate as they pulled away from the curb and headed up the street.

i texted Levi the photo of the plate. It wouldn’t take him long to track her down.

I returned to the car to find Shane and Dominic already waiting for me, leaning against the car deep in conversation. Shane head popped up as he heard me approaching, " what did you find?" I asked looking from Shane to Dominic.

Dominic was the one to reply " we followed the sent to Spitfire Dr and then lost it. we picked up the sent again too streets over on Cumberland road, it lead us to an abandoned farm house but it was empty"

Shane continued "yeah it was abandoned when we we got their but their were signs that someone had been their for some time but had left in a hurry"

“I know. Something is up, and we’re going to get to the bottom of it.” I said more to myself.

"do you think the attack tonight has anything to do with the recent attacks and disappearance's in the area" asked Shane

"I don't know" I said honestly.

“We should call in another team for this one,” Dominic suggest as we hoped in the car.

“I'll call Nickson. im pritty sure his team is the closest.” Shane said, grabbing his phone to make the call.

“ Nickson said They’ll be here tomorrow by 11am.” said Shane.

as we pulled away from the curb, making our way back to the hotel.

as we pulled in to the hotel car park Dominic turned in his seat looked at me

“You gonna to tell us why you’re in such a dark mood tonight?” he asked.

gaving Dominic a sideways glare. “I’m.. not.. in.. a.. mood.”

shane made a sound like a snort.

hoping out of the car we headed towards the entrance.

I drifted off in thought

in my line of work, There was no place for a mate, no matter what I was feeling and my job always came first.

My phone started to vibrate and Levi's name flashed across the screen. I answered it “Levi, what did you find?”

“I traced the license plate to a Matty Patersenie, 8 Kansas roadin in Willo Falls, which is about a 10 minute drive from the club. he has a father named Ben Patersenie, who owns auto repair shop at the address listed above.

I searched the employee records and found a photo and information of an employee. I’m sending you their pictures now.” A photo appeared on the screen and I recognized the face immediately.

I stared at JJ Henderson with her apple green eyes and flowing black locks. when Levi spoke again, "is that her?" he asked

I said "yes that's definitely her"

“Do you have her address for me?”

Levi laughed. “yeah I'm sending it to you now?” with in seconds my phone lite up, telling me a text had just arrived.

“need anything else?” he asked.

“No, and Thanks, Levi.”

“Anytime.”

Chris leaned over and look at the familiar face on my phone.

“Ah, Levi found your girl.” said Shane

getting out of the message, I said

“She’s not my girl,” I grumbled,

shaking his head. we said our good nights and went to our separate rooms to wait for the team to arrive in the morning.
