I took a deep breath as I looked at myself in the mirror, for the 5th time already. Believe it or not this was my very first date, and I was extremely nervous. What if I do something stupid?, seemed to be the only thought running through my mind all day. Karen kept telling me that I was going to be okay, but it didn't make me feel any better. Mel and Sam quickly volunteered to take me shopping today because they said that I had to look ''breathtaking'' for a first date, and they seemed more excited than I was. Scott didn't seem too happy about me going on a date with Calvin, but I ignored that. After all, I wasn't so happy with him dating Allison, either. Not happy, at all. And besides, he didn't control my life. So, there I was, wearing a cute, short dress and some high heels that were already killing me. But, it was all in the name of fashion, I guess.
''Penny, are you-Whoa.'' Karen entered the room, stopping when she saw me.
I looked at her with a worried expression. ''Do I look okay?''
She eyed me up and down, and slowly started to walk in circles around me. ''I must congratulate you, sis, you have done an amazing job.''
I gave her a small smile. ''Well, thanks.''
''Calvin will fall head over heels for you.''
I chuckled. ''You think?''
''I know it.'' she said, grinning from ear to ear.
I rolled my eyes and tried to hide my blush.
''My little girl's growing up so fast.'' she said dramatically, pretending to wipe a tear off of her eye.
I started to laugh, because it was the only thing I could do. The nervousness was making me feel more nauseous as the seconds passed, and I had to cope somehow.
Just as Karen and I were making our way downstairs, we heard knocking on the front door. Karen gasped. ''It's him!''
''Oh my God," I muttered, checking my dress once more. "Do I still look good?"
''You look beautiful,'' Karen reassured me. "Now, go get the door while I go get your purse."
''What, me?''
''Yeah, you!'' she said, pushing me until we reached the front door.
I sighed before opening it. Turned out, it wasn't Calvin. ''Scott?," I furrowed my eyebrows. "What are you doing here?''
His eyes softened as he looked at me up and down. ''Wow. Penny, you look... beautiful.''
I was pretty sure that I blushed different shades of red. Scott rarely gave me compliments like that, and when he did I felt like I had just won the lottery. I grinned. ''Thanks," I said. Then, I spoke louder so that Karen could hear me from upstairs. "It's just Scott, Karen!''
''Goddammit!'' I heard her reply from our room and I let out a quiet laugh.
'Scott let out a small chuckle as he looked at the stairs before turning to me, again. ''So, you're still going?''
I rolled my eyes. ''Yes, I'm still going. Why are you so against this, anyway?''
''Because I know how he is, and I don't want you to end up hurt,'' he said. "I don't trust him."
''I won't get hurt. Calvin's a nice guy.''
''He acts like one just so he can get every girl he wants.''
''That's not true.''
''Of course it is,'' he said. "Just ask the girls he's dated before."
I huffed. "I'm not going to ask anything to anyone."
He sighed, running a hand through his hair. ''Look, I just want to protect you-''
''From what?," I cut him off. "There's nothing to protect me from, Calvin's not a bad guy. Can't you just be happy for me? It's my first date ever and I want it to go well.''
Why the hell was he so angry? He could at least pretend to be happy for me, just how I've doing. ''Okay, fine," he said in defeat. "If you wanna go out with hin, then do it, It's not my problem. And if you're happy... then I guess I am, too.''
I smiled in relief. ''Thank you.''
''But please just be careful.'' he pleaded as I let him enter my house, seeing that we were still standing in the doorway.
I rolled my eyes behind him. ''I will. Though there's nothing to be careful of'' I muttered the last part so that Scott wouldn't hear. I was pretty sure he heard it, though, but I decided to change the subject so we didn't have to talk about that anymore. ''So, what's up?''
He shrugged, sitting down on the couch. ''Not much. Derek gave me a little visit earlier at the hospital's parking lot.''
I chuckled and sat next to him. ''Oh... well, okay. Same old Derek, surprising people.''
"Yeah," he chuckled as well, staring at the ground. His smile faded slowly. ''He told me to stay away from Allison.''
I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion. ''Why would he say that?''
He finally looked back up at me. ''He thinks that she's a distraction.''
Well, where was the lie in that?
''But,'' he stood up, smirking all of a sudden. ''I am going to see her right now.''
I stood up, as well. ''But he just told you to stay away from her.''
''Well, did I say that I was gonna listen to him?'' he said, grinning like an i***t.
I just wanted to yell at him when he said that. Not just because Derek told him to stay away from her, but because of his inability to let go of her, which just hurt me more. Yeah, I was going on a date with Calvin, still having feelings for Scott. It was messed up, but hopefully, after the night I wouldn't have to worry about my feelings for Scott anymore. I sighed. ''Fine. I won't say anything about this because it's none of my business.''
''I just don't think I could stay away from her. In fact, I should get going. I'll see you tomorrow, Penny.'' he said, planting a kiss on my cheek and making his way to the door.
I placed a hand on the spot where he kissed me as he left, and then I sighed. He should just stay away and never talk to me again. Then it would've been easier to forget about this aching in my chest.
Fifteen minutes passed and when I was about to go back to my room, there was another knock on the door. I opened it, and this time Calvin was standing there, a smile on his face. ''Hey, beautiful.'' he said.
''Hi, handsome.'' I said, smiling back.
''You ready to go?'' he asked, offering me his hand.
I nodded whilst grabbed my purse, linking my hand with his. ''Yes. Let's go.''
***
The first phase of our date was the typical movie date, and if I was being honest, I didn't mind it one bit. Something I also liked was the fact that Calvin wasn't like those boys who tried to suck the girl's face off during the movie, because that would've been too much for me to handle.
''So, did you like it?'' Calvin asked me as we left the movie theatre.
''Are you kidding? I loved it!,'' I said. "I mean, it wasn't the scariest movie, but it was very enjoyable. I would definitely watch it again."
''Hey, just give me the word and I'll take you to watch it again.'' he chuckled, both of us hopping into his car.
''So, where to now?'' I asked.
''I'm not gonna tell you that.'' he smirked as he started the car.
''You're mean.''
He rolled his eyes playfully. "Don't be so impatient, we'll get there."
''Okay, okay.'' I laughed, and then we drove off.
***
We made it to the forest, for some reason, and then we hopped out off the car. Calvin had a bag in his hand. ''Okay, now you have to close your eyes.'' he said.
I gave him a 'Seriously?' look, but he just laughed. ''Close them.''
I did as I was told without knowing why, and I let him guide me. I felt his hands covering my eyes and I couldn't help but to giggle. He walked me towards the forest, and I still had no idea where we were heading to exactly. But, we sure had to walk a lot. And when I said a lot, I meant a lot. ''Okay,'' he finally removed his hands once we stopped. ''Open them.''
When I opened them I let out a loud gasp because of the view in front of me. The forest was filled with fireflies, actual fireflies. A whole bunch of them. Everywhere. It was a breathtaking view that I had never seen before. They looked like Christmas lights flying around. Then, after I was done taking it all in, I noticed a small table with two chairs in the distance. And, last but not least, there was an amazing view from the pond nearby. I looked around, still admiring everything. ''Wow,'' I breathed. ''How is this possible?''
''Most of it is just the power of nature.'' he said.
''It's incredible'' I whispered, still in awe.
''Let's sit, shall we?'' he said.
When we sat down, Calvin took a wrapped up bowl out of the bag, and inside the bowl he revealed a bunch of chocolate covered strawberries, which just went amazingly with the setting. We started to eat the strawberries peacefully as we watched the fireflies fly in every direction. ''How did you find this place?,'' I asked. "I've never seen it around before."
''I don't know. I think it was by accident, actually. I had a bad day one day and I was walking around here at night, and suddenly I found it. I come here often since then.'' he explained and I slowly nodded.
''Well, I'm glad you found it.''
''And I'm glad that you get see it.'' he said, making me blush.
He took my hand from across the table. ''Penny, I know that you're going through some sort of situation with McCall, but I'm going to be honest, I really like you. And I think It'd be great if we could keep doing this. I want to go out with you again.''
Somehow, I was shocked by this. Maybe part of me thought that this would be a one time thing, that Calvin only took me out because he pitied me. But, there he was, asking me on a second date, when we hadn't even finished the first one. ''I...'' If I said yes, then that meant that we would probably keep going out more often and that would probably develop into a relationship... maybe. But, did I want all of that to happen? ''Can I... can I think about it?''
I could see the small frown on his face, but he nodded, anyways. ''Sure. I understand. Sorry if I made you feel uncomfortable or anything.''
''No, you didn't!,'' I said, squeezing his hand. "But, like you said, about my situation... It's just a lot to take in, you know?"
"Yes, of course," he said, smiling. "If you don't feel like It's the right thing to go out with me, then I won't pressure you. You just let me know if you want to keep this up."
I nodded, smiling back, receiving a wink from him. "Thank you, Calvin."
