Chapter 12

1997 Words
''Good morning, Penny.'' mom greeted me as I sat down at the table. ''Good morning, mother.'' I said back. ''How did it go with Melissa?'' she asked. Confused, I looked at Karen. She looked at me and shrugged. ''With Melissa?'' ''Yeah. Bryson told me you were volunteering to help Melissa on her nurse job for the night. That is so sweet of you!'' And, as I noticed Bryson staring at me knowingly, it hit me. He was supposed to cover for me. "Oh... right!," I smiled at her. ''Yeah, it was great, thanks for asking.'' ''I think i'm going to call her right now-'' mom started saying as she stood up from her chair. ''NO!'' I shouted. Karen and Bryson looked at me as if I was insane. Mom turned around with a look of horror on her face. ''W-why not?'' ''Because, uhh...'' I tried to think of something. "Her phone is... broken." Mom furrowed her eyebrows. "It is?" "Yeah," I nodded. "And she told me that it might take a while to fix it." ''Is that so?'' mom said and I nodded, again. ''Oh... Well, okay.'' with that she left. I sighed in relief. Karen eyed me up and down as she chewed her pancake. "You need help or something." *** Today was Allison's birthday. Lydia and I agreed and we took our time to make a surprise for her inside her locker. Surprisingly, it was mostly Lydia's idea. Seriously. Her exact words were "We should do something for Allison. You know, for her birthday". I almost choked on my chocolate cupcake. She really seemed to be fond of Allison now. And I couldn't lie, I was fond of her, too. I wanted Lydia and I to surprise Allison at the same time, but Lydia wasn't even at school, yet, which was weird because she always there early. She wasn't answering my calls, my texts, anything. If she was sick she would've told me already. Maybe she overslept this time... When I entered the school, the first thing I saw was Allison stealing a kiss from Scott, making him smile afterwards. Great. What an amazing way to start your day. Just keep walking, Penny. Just keep walking. Instead of finding Lydia, though, I found Stiles, who clearly knew what I saw earlier. "Enjoyed the view?" "Oh, definitely," I rolled my eyes. "Hey, have you seen Lydia today?" He shook his head. "I haven't, which is weird. Why?" "No reason, she just hasn't answered my texts and I'm not sure if she's coming to school today." I said. "Oh, well, maybe she just got caught up in traffic... right?" he said in a hopeful tone. "We'll find out eventually," I said as I looked at my phone and then back up at him. "Don't go panicking about it, though." He exhaled deeply. "I'll try not to." *** On chemistry class I didn't see her, either. Jackson was out, too. And even Scott and Allison weren't there. ''I'm going to check on Lydia today, after school.'' Stiles whispered behind me. I looked at him with wide eyes. ''Wait, did something happen to her? Is she alright?'' ''Yeah, she is. She's just a little stressed out.'' ''About what?,'' I asked. "And how do you know that?!" ''Well, I unfollowed the advice you gave me earlier and I panicked, so I called dad to see if he, by any chance, knew something =, and it turned out that he did. He told me that she and Jackson witnessed an attack last night.'' he explained. "An attack?," he nodded at my shocked expression. "Do you think it was-" "The werewolf Alpha who bit Scott? Definitely." he finished. "I wonder who it is," I said out loud, my eyes glancing out the classroom's glass window. "We already know It's not Derek." "And we also need to know what did Jackson and Lydia see exactly." Stiles added and I nodded. Then, on the seat next to Stiles, I noticed Danny sitting there, minding his own business. Danny, Jackson's best friend. I looked back at Stiles, again. ''Maybe Jackson told Danny?'' He looked at Danny and turned back to me. ''Let's give it a shot.'' ''Hey Danny'' I hissed, trying to get his attention. He looked at me, confused as to why I was speaking to him, when we barely looked at each other in the hallways. ''Hey?'' ''Listen, can we ask you a question?'' I said. ''No.'' ''Good. We'll ask you, anyways,'' Stiles interrupted. ''Did Jackson tell you anything about what he saw last night?'' ''No, he didn't.'' Danny answered, looking back at his notebook. ''Great. Was he acting weird last night?'' I asked. ''I haven't seen him since we left school yesterday.'' he answered, already looking annoyed. ''Did you talk with him on the phone? Email? Skype?'' Stiles asked. ''I haven't talked to Jackson at all, okay?'' he said. ''Okay, okay, we were just asking.'' I muttered. ''One more question, though'' Stiles added. ''What?'' Danny said, same annoyed tone. ''...Do you find me attractive?'' The look on Danny's face was priceless. ''Stilinski! Brooke! Do you want to share something with the class?'' Mr. Harris said before Danny could respond, and all eyes turned to us. ''No, sir.'' Stiles and I said at the same time. *** ''Was that really necessary, Stiles?'' I said, both of us walking through the halls. ''Yes, it was." He said. "I needed to know if I'm attractive to gay guys, but he didn't even give me a valid answer.'' ''Why is it so important to know if you're attractive to gay guys?,'' I said. "You're not gay... are you?" He huffed. "Of course not." "Well, then." ''Whatever,'' he said. ''What do you think, though, am I attractive to gay guys?'' ''I don't know, I'm not a gay guy'' I said, rolling my eyes. ''Just take a guess, then.'' ''Drop it, Stilinski.'' ''Can't you just tell me? Am I attractive to gay guys?'' But before I could answer his question, I spotted Jackson talking with Derek. I didn't even know they knew each other, but that wasn't my main concern at the moment. All I wanted to know was Lydia's status. I could still hear Stiles asking if he was attractive to gay guys from as I walked towards them, but I ignored him, my full attention towards the other two. ''Jackson!,'' I said, once I reached them. ''How's Lydia?'' He raised an eyebrow. "And why should I tell you?" ''Oh, let me see," I pretended to think about it. "Well, because I'm her best friend, I've been there to comfort her whenever you two fight, and because you're a douche who should really start being nice to me.'' ''I guess I'll be going now," Derek interfered, turning to Jackson and smirking. "Thank you for the information, Jackson.'' Whwn he was out of sight, I looked confusedly at Jackson. "How do you guys know each other?'' ''That's none of your business, Penny.'' Jackson snapped. I rolled my eyes. ''Fine, don't tell me. But, can you please tell me how Lydia is? And notice how I said the word please this time.'' He shrugged. ''I don't know about her.'' I stared at him in disbelief. ''What do you mean 'you don't know'? She's your girlfriend!'' ''...So?'' Is he kidding me right now? ''Do you even care about her?'' ''Why should I? She doesn't seem to care about me.'' he said. ''Well, I think she cares too much about you," I glared at him. "God, you're unbelievable." I walked away from him before I did something that would get me in trouble later. I really did hate that guy. The only things he cared about were a) himself, b) his looks, and c) his car. I really could not stand him. I got so lost in thoughts that I almost bumped into someone in front of me . ''Oh my God, I'm so sorry!'' I apologized. ''It's okay, no worries.'' the person said and I immediately recognized that voice. I looked up quickly. Just as I thought. ''Oh, hey Calvin.'' ''Hey, Penny,'' he said smiling. "Are you okay? You seem bothered by something." "It's nothing," I assured. "Just that every time I finish talking to Jackson I end up wanting to punch him." He chuckled. "Don't we all?" I couldn't help but smile. "Well, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one." He smiled back. "Hey, do you wanna go grab lunch together? I mean, It's not too fancy eating here at school, but you look like you want to get some things off of your chest and I'll happily be here for you." "Really?," I said. "That's so sweet, thank you. I'd love to have lunch with you." *** I never in a million years would've thought that I'd be having lunch with Calvin Williams, just the both of us sitting at the table. It was too unreal to process, 'cause he was on a whole other level, and I was just this girl who happened to be Lydia Martin's best friend, but also Scott McCall and Stiles Stilinski's best friend. Both sides were very different. Also, I never in a million years would've thought that I'd be letting everything out with Calvin Williams, and that he would be listening intensely to every single word I said. "-and, I don't know, I just feel like I'm stuck between this all," I said. I had basically told him all about my current situation, while leaving the supernatural details aside, of course. "Because I've always had this huge crush on Scott, and now he's with Allison, but I really like her, so it just hurts a lot more. And now, Lydia's not here because she had an... accident last night, and I'm worried about her." "Wow," was all he said. "You guys are going through... a lot." A lot more than you think, Calvin... "Yeah," I said, playing with my food. "I haven't had time to relax because I always feel a huge burden of emotions lately, and I hate it. Sorry if I'm being annoying, by the way, I just needed to let it all out." "No, It's okay," he assured me. "I really enjoy spending time with you, and It's better that you let it out." I gave him a small smile. "Thanks." "So, you definitely need to spend some time away from all of this," he said with a sigh. "Look, I know you just told me how much you like Scott, but, by the looks of it, you could do without those feelings. If I ask you out on a date right now, would you accept?" I looked up at him, my eyes wide. "Wha- you're kidding." He chucked and shook his head. "I'm not. I really want to take you out." I could not believe what he had just said, and honestly I did not know how to feel about it, either. "I, uh..." no coherent words left my mouth. "It's okay if you don't want to, though," he said. "I don't want you to feel pressured or anything, I just thought you could forget about Scott and Allison for a while and I guess I-" "Yes." I said before I could stop myself. He stared at me as if he head not heard me right. "Wait, really?" I nodded slowly. "Yeah. I'll go out with you." And then he grinned. It was beautiful. "That's great. Yeah, that's amazing. So, um, should I pick you up tomorrow night at your house?" I nodded again. "Sounds good." "Great," he said as he stood up. "It's a date then." "It's a date." I repeated, mostly to remind myself that I was actually going out on a date. He nodded, beaming. "I'll see you tomorrow, then." And with that, he kissed my cheek, picked up his stuff, and then left, leaving me sitting there in shock. I was going out on a date and it wasn't with Scott...
