Chapter 2

(seven years later) (Artemis POV) I stared out my window as rain dribbled down the glass, my orange eyes almost glowing in the reflection. I glared at myself, I hated how I looked. my long brown hair never behaved, it always seemed to be a mess. my eyes were sunken in from lack of sleep, highlighted by my chubby cheeks. and my eyes... my stupid orange eyes, they scared people. at the sound of a floorboard creaking I spun around in full defensive mode, only to meet eyes with my mom. "Artemis, everything ok?" her voice was soothing. "sorry mom... yeah I'm ok, just on edge a little." I replied relaxing a little. she crossed my room and took my hand, turning us both to the window, "you know it was on a night just like this that you and your brother came to us." I squeezed her hand, "you've told me before." "you were so small... and completely soaked, honestly your father had no idea what he was doing." she smiled thinking about the memory. "sorry to interrupt, but Alpha Ruger and beta Aaron have called for you Artemis." a warrior said stiffly before running away. I gave Mom a forced smile before heading to the Alpha's office down the hall. I didn't bother knocking, everyone else was already there. Alpha Ruger, my dad, and my brother were gathered around the desk where a map of our territory was laid out. "now that were all here let's get straight to the point. patrols have seen members from the Blue Moon pack along the Eastern boarder. I sent a group out this morning but they haven't returned or sent word." my dad explained and pointed to the spot on the map. "I need my two best captains on this. if they have crossed the boarder, it's war. I'm tired of this cat and mouse game they've been playing for two years." Alpha Ruger said, his voice stone cold. two years ago a mob of rogues invaded our territory and after some interrogation they revealed the Blue Moon pack had paid them to attack us. but every meeting with their alpha has ended in his denial. yet we continue to have his members dancing dangerously close to us. when some of our warriors started going missing our Alpha sent his two younger kids to join his eldest in Romania, safe from the brewing war. my brother and I wasted no time. we gathered our ten best warriors and split into two groups. one group heading one way and the other in the opposite direction, to run both sides of the eastern border and meet in the middle. it didn't take long to smell it. Blood. I quickly transformed and turned up the speed. after a few more minutes the trees opened up into a clearing and we could see the chaos. without needing a command my men launched into the fight. after a while I became concerned, we had taken out so many and yet their numbers didn't seem to be thinning and my brother was no where to be found. I mind linked Alpha Ruger about the situation, leaving out my brother's absence. "do what you can and get back to the pack house. we're under attack by rogues." he answered, my blood ran cold. "everyone listen up! pick one target and take them out then give the rest the slip. the pack house is under attack by rogues." I shouted in my head to my warriors. I watched as I fought as one by one my five guys melted back into the forest. I was on my own. suddenly a massive wolf slammed into my side, sending me spinning into a tree. I forced myself back to my ready position, the huge black wolf practically grinning at me. I pulled my lips back in a snarl and dared him to come closer. the clearing seemed to go silent, as if everyone was waiting for what we would do.
