ONE Saturday night, about a fortnight after Rajesh left for Vellore, Emon was watching television at home in the drawing-room. Later, just before night meal, the telephone rang. His mother went out of the kitchen and picked up the extension in the dining-room.
A few minutes later, Mrs Barua came into the drawing-room. Her face was pale and her eyes were watery. She said in a shaky voice: “Emon – Emon, Rajesh is dead.”
“Who dead?” Emon asked.
“Rajesh.”
“Oh!”
“He died during operation in Vellore yesterday.”
“Who told you?”
“Deb’s Maa phoned just now. She said, today afternoon she had met Rajesh’s elder brother on the lane – he told her. Rajesh’s Dewta, will reach here with the body tomorrow morning.”
