CHAPTER 19
*DEVON MCKNIGHT*
My heart is beating faster than normal as I watch the clock ticks towards the end of the office hours. I promised William that I will tell him what happened to me. I have to tell him.
Then it strikes six. That is the time that our office hours end.
“Let’s go?” William said with a smile on his face. I felt so bad, cause I know that smile won’t be there after we talk. “Where do you want to talk?”
“Anywhere you want.” I said.
“Well, let’s go to a place where I know you will love.”
He brought me to restaurant, this time it’s an expensive restaurant. I looked around, this the first time that brought me to this kind of place.
“You like it?” he asked.
“Yeah, but why here?”
He grabbed my hand closed to his chest and smiled. “Well this is the first time that I’m going to celebrate out monthsary together with you…” he said. I gasp as I am going to cry, he remembered. “..I know it’s too cheesy and stuff but, I just want to show you how sincere I am to you.” He continued. I can’t hold on the tears anymore, the guilt and regret are overwhelming.
“Why are you crying?” he asked, wiping away my tears with his gentle hands, as he led me to sit on our table.
“I’m sorry, it’s just that…. I can’t…I can’t do this anymore.” I choked as those painful words went out in my mouth.
His mouth opened slightly as he was trying to comprehend the words that I just said. “What do you mean?” he said, the smile on his face withered.
“I’m sorry William.” I can’t face him anymore; it just hurts me to say this things to the man had been true to me all this time. I ran outside the restaurant. I was crying outside while running, but I felt a hand that grabbed my wrists. It’s William.
“Tell me why?” He demanded, now his face is all confused and worried at the same time.
No matter how lame it was, but the lamest excuse that man ever invented popped into my mind. “It’s not your fault or anything, it’s just..” I didn’t finish.
“That bull s**t Dev. Don’t you dare tell me that kind of rubbish excuse!!” He yelled, now his grip it too tight that it hurts. I can see that he is angry.
I jumped as I was surprised that he yelled at me.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry…” I sobbed in between. “I don’t know what to do.” People are staring at us. William grabbed to a more secluded face where people are far from us.
He just looked at me, his eyes, I don’t how to explain it, but I can see hurt and hope. Hurt because of the fact that I want to break up with him and hope because …he’s still hoping that I would just change my mind. And it pains me to see this man feel that emotions because of a stupid girl like me.
“Just say it Dev! Don’t make me look like stupid here. I am not a psychic that I can read your mind!”
“I just can’t continue cheating on you.” I sobbed, there was a pause.
He laughed with disbelief. “What?!”
“I cheated, not just physically, but also emotionally.” I said still crying. “I like you so much…and I tried my hardest to….love you…but…”
“Who is he?” now he’s tone is calm but you can still hear that there is anger in his voice.
“I…”
“Is …is it Brandon?” he said. Now I’m looking at him.
“I …”
“Just spill it Dev!”
I just cried, I couldn’t answer the his question.
He shook his head and released a bitter smirk. “I knew it! How could I be so stupid!” he looked at me and went closer to me, his hands are on my shoulders. “What did he do to you?”
“William he didn’t do anything…it was me who fell for him.” I finally said it.
“I know he did something to you…he can’t possibly..” he said, he’s eyes are now pleading.
“Will I am so sorry…I should have not entered in this relationship in the first place…I thought I could love you…and treat you the way you deserve.”
“Then why are you doing this to me?”
I just couldn’t take the face that I’m cheating to a good man for some jerk like Brandon.” I yelled while crying.
“Then why did you still chose him?” He asked.
“Because…because I love him.” I said. Now I saw tears falling from his face. I felt panic ran through my veins. “please ..please Will don’t cry..you will make it hard for both of us.”
“what do you expect me to do? Be happy that the girl I love told me that she didn’t actually loved me back, but instead she loved my best friend who is jerk! Is that what you want me to feel!”
I couldn’t find any words that can calm him down. I know that I hurt him. And it really hurts me to see him this way. I just wished that he would just move one, or I can just take that pain away from him and suffer alone, but I just can’t.
“I’m sorry..”
He dried his tears. “You know what you’re right. I don’t deserve you.” He said looking at me, leaning closer to my face and gave his final kiss. “But let me just tell you this…I loved you whole heartedly…and I will never regret that I did. All the things that we did and the kisses that we shared, I will treasure it dearly…” he said, I know his words are true. “..but I can’t promise you that I will treat you the same way as I did before.” He kissed me again in the forehead before saying “Good bye Devon.”
My knees weakened as I saw him disappearing in the crowd of people. I cried so hard that I don’t care if people may hear me.
I went home devastated. The girls looked worried but they just let me go to room, they knew that I wanted to be alone. I curled myself in my bed feeling so down and lonely. Pain is slowly devouring me as the image of William crying in front of me and because of me.
*BRANDON WALTER*
I went home feeling exhausted. I have to do some more paper works that I decided to have overtime at the office.
I heard the door bell.
The maids are not yet here until the morning so I just took it. Who could it be this late at night?
I opened the door. William is there holding a bottle of whisky.
“Are you drunk?” I asked, as he was leaning on the wall for support so that he can still stand.
He smiled at me. “Brandon…my friend.” He said between hiccups. He hugged me and pat my back. “You are one lucky man slut.” Then he’s slapping my face, not to strong though.
“What happened to you?” I asked curious of what made him look wasted.
“You know what…I…I mean Devon…my beautiful Devon..just broke up with me…” he said, his eyes are like puffed, he was crying. Devon broke up with him?
“What?” I said.
“I know right…I’m too perfect for her..but..” Hiccup. “She chose a bastard like you instead of a good guy like me.” He said trying to punch me, but alcohol is all over his system and he just passed out.
I can’t believe I’m carrying my guy friend like a princess because he’s drunk. I put him to the couch. Devon broke with him? I can’t seem to comprehend. I have to talk to her, now.. well at least I can just call her..
I took my phone and dialed her number. It keeps ringing.
“com’on pick it up.” I muttered.
After the forth ring she picked up. “Hello?” her voice choked when she spoke.
“Where are you?”
“I don’t know,”
“What do you mean you don’t know?”
“I’m still in the car, I think I’m in a parking lot…oh it’s park.” She said.
“Are you drunk?”
“Huh? Oh no, you woke me up…What do you want? She said.
“William is here.” I said. I can hear her silence. “He’s drunk.”
“Is..is he alright?” she asked.
“Yeah…he’s sleeping in the couch right now.”
I heard her sigh. “That’s good.”
“I heard you broke up with him.”
Again there is silence. “He told you?” she said.
“Yeah, and it’s because of me?” I can’t help but smile. Just the thought of her choosing me, But it faded quickly as I saw my friend lying on the couch.
She didn’t answer. I can sense that it felt awkward. “We have to talk.”
“What do you think we’re doing right now?” She said sarcastically. I rolled my eyes, even at the moments like this, she’s still stubborn.
“I mean personally..”
“But it’s almost midnight, it’s dangerous to drive at this hour.”
“Fine..tomorrow then. It’s your day off, so you don’t have an excuse.” I heard he growl as she said
“Fine…but take care of him.” She said.
There’s a big pause.
“Ok..” I said and then hang up.
