Lola is in the kitchen with Hannah when it happens.
They're making tea, laughing about something stupid, when two of Ocean's men walk in. She recognizes them from security, Marco and Tony. Mid-level guys who usually work the perimeter.
They don't see her at first. She's partially hidden by the open pantry door, reaching for honey.
"...can't believe he actually married her," Tony is saying. "His son's leftovers. That's desperate even for..."
"Careful," Marco warns. "Boss might hear you."
"Boss isn't here. And come on, you're thinking it too. She's damaged goods. Divorced. Used up. What's he thinking, bringing trash like that into his house?"
The honey jar slips from Lola's fingers.
It doesn't break. Just hits the counter with a loud thunk.
Both men turn. See her standing there.
Tony's face goes pale. "Oh shit..."
"Out," Hannah says, her voice hard as steel. "Get the f**k out of this kitchen right now."
But Lola can't move. Can't breathe. The words echo in her head.
Damaged goods. Used up. Trash.
Everything Ethan used to say. Everything she's tried so hard not to believe.
And here are Ocean's own men saying the same things.
"Ma'am, I didn't mean..." Tony starts.
"You didn't mean for her to hear it," Hannah snaps. "That's different from not meaning it."
Marco is already backing toward the door, pulling Tony with him. "We're sorry. It was out of line. We'll just..."
"You'll just what?"
Ocean's voice cuts through the kitchen like a blade.
Everyone freezes.
He's standing in the doorway, and the expression on his face makes Lola's blood run cold. She's never seen him look like this. Absolutely murderous.
"Boss, we were just..."
"I heard what you were." Ocean steps into the kitchen. His movements are controlled. Precise. Like a predator stalking prey. "You were disrespecting my wife. In my house. In front of her."
"It was a joke..."
"A joke." Ocean's voice drops to something deadly quiet. "You think calling my wife trash is a joke?"
Tony opens his mouth. Closes it. Clearly realizes there's no good answer.
"Lola," Ocean says, not looking away from the two men. "Please leave the room."
"I'm fine, I can..."
"Please." His voice gentles just for her. "I don't want you to see this."
Hannah takes Lola's arm. Pulls her toward the hallway. "Come on."
But Lola can't help looking back as they leave.
Ocean has crossed the kitchen in three strides. He grabs Tony by the throat. Slams him against the wall so hard the pictures rattle.
"Boss, please.. " Tony chokes out.
"You will never speak about my wife again. You will never look at her. You will never even think about her." Ocean's voice is terrifyingly calm. "Because if you do, if I hear one more word, one more whisper, I will break every bone in your body. Slowly. Do you understand?"
Tony nods frantically. Can't speak with Ocean's hand around his throat.
Ocean releases him. Tony collapses, gasping.
Then Ocean turns to Marco. "And you. You heard him disrespect her and said nothing. That makes you complicit."
"I'm sorry, boss. I should have stopped him..."
"Yes. You should have." Ocean looks at both men with pure contempt. "My wife is under my protection. That means she is under your protection. When someone disrespects her, you shut it down. Immediately. Or you answer to me."
"Yes, boss."
"Get out of my sight. Both of you. You're on probation. One more mistake and you're gone."
They scramble out. Fast.
Ocean stands there for a moment, his hands clenched into fists. Then he turns and sees Lola and Hannah still in the hallway.
His expression immediately softens. "I told you to leave."
"We were leaving," Hannah says. "Slowly."
"Are you okay?" Ocean asks Lola, moving toward her. "What they said..."
"It's fine. I'm used to it."
"It's not fine. And you shouldn't be used to it." He stops in front of her. Searches her face. "Did they hurt you? Scare you?"
"No. They just... said what everyone thinks."
"No." Ocean's voice is firm. "They said what assholes think. Not everyone. Not me."
Lola looks at him. At this powerful man who just threatened his own employee for insulting her. Who looks genuinely distressed that she heard those words.
"You didn't have to do that," she says quietly.
"Yes, I did. You're my wife. No one speaks about you like that. Ever."
"But they're right, aren't they? I am divorced. I am..."
"Stop." Ocean's hand moves toward her face, then stops. Like he wants to touch her but won't let himself. "You are none of those things. You're a woman who survived. Who escaped. Who's rebuilding. That's not trash. That's strength."
Hannah makes a small sound. When they both look at her, she's got tears in her eyes.
"Sorry. That was just really beautiful. I'm gonna go... somewhere else." She practically runs from the kitchen.
Leaving Lola alone with Ocean.
"I'm sorry you heard that," Ocean says. "I'll make sure it doesn't happen again."
"You can't control what everyone thinks."
"No. But I can control what they say. And I can make it very clear that disrespecting you has consequences."
Lola's throat feels tight. "Why?"
"Why what?"
"Why do you care so much? About what some random guys think about me?"
Ocean is quiet for a moment. When he speaks, his voice is careful. "Because you deserve respect. Because you've been treated like you're worthless for too long. And because..." He stops. Struggles with something. "Because when people talk about you like that, it makes me want to commit violence."
The admission hangs between them.
"Ocean..."
"I know. I know it's too much. Too protective. You're not actually my wife, not really, and I have no right to feel this..." He runs his hand through his hair. "I'm sorry. I'll try to be less..."
"Don't." The word bursts out before Lola can stop it. "Don't be less protective. Don't be less anything. What you just did, defending me like that, no one's ever..." Her voice breaks. "No one's ever stood up for me before."
Ocean steps closer. "Then everyone you've known before has been an idiot."
"You really think that?"
"I know that." He's so close now. Close enough that she can see the anger still simmering in his gray eyes. Anger on her behalf. "You're not trash. You're not damaged goods. You're a woman who survived hell. And anyone who can't see how remarkable that is doesn't deserve to be in the same room as you."
Lola's heart is pounding. From fear of the confrontation. From gratitude. From something else she can't quite name.
"Thank you," she whispers. "For defending me. For making me feel like I matter."
"You do matter. More than you know."
They're standing very close now. Too close. She should step back. Should put distance between them.
But she doesn't want to.
For the first time in four years, she feels protected. Safe. Valued.
And it's all because of this man who married her to save her life and somehow made her feel like she's worth saving.
"I should go," Ocean says, but he doesn't move. "Let you process. Make sure those idiots know they're on thin ice."
"Okay."
"Unless you need me to stay? If you're upset..."
"I'm not upset. I'm..." What is she? "I'm grateful. And a little bit amazed that you'd do that for me."
"I'd do a lot more than that for you."
The words feel weighted. Important.
Ocean seems to realize what he said. Clears his throat. "I mean, you're under my protection. Of course I'd defend you. That's just... that's the arrangement."
Right. The arrangement. The marriage that's not a real marriage.
Except it's starting to feel real.
"Right," Lola echoes. "The arrangement."
Ocean nods. Takes a step back. Putting distance between them.
"I'll see you at dinner?"
"Yes. Dinner."
He leaves. Lola stands in the kitchen, her heart still racing, her mind spinning.
Hannah appears from wherever she was hiding. "Holy shit."
"Yeah."
"He almost murdered those guys for insulting you."
"I know."
"And he looked at you like..." Hannah trails off. "Like you're not just some responsibility. Like you're something important."
"He was just being protective."
"Lola." Hannah's voice is gentle. "That wasn't just protective. That was possessive. In the best possible way."
Possessive. The word should scare her. Should remind her of Ethan.
But it doesn't. Because this is different. Ocean isn't trying to control her. He's trying to protect her honor. Her dignity.
He's fighting for her, not against her.
And that changes everything.
"What do I do?" Lola asks quietly.
"About what?"
"About the fact that I think I'm starting to have feelings for my husband who isn't really my husband."
Hannah grins. "Honey, I think you passed 'starting to' about a week ago. And from the way he looks at you? The feeling is mutual."
"That's impossible. I'm too young. Too damaged. Too..."
"Too nothing. You're a woman. He's a man. You're both adults. And you're both clearly into each other." Hannah pours them both tea. "The question is, what are you going to do about it?"
Lola doesn't have an answer.
All she knows is that Ocean defended her. Made her feel valued. Protected.
And for the first time since Ethan, she feels like maybe, just maybe, she could be worth loving.
