I tilted the envelope over my palm, and a small photo slid out. It was an old photograph with a glossy finish and faded corners, taken at Ashford Academy. Students crowded across the courtyard in sports uniforms, blazers and house colors. Someone had taken the picture from the steps above the main lawn, high enough to catch the old science block behind us. I remembered that day. It was our Sports Day. I had just clocked fifteen. My younger face sat near the left edge, half-hidden behind Leah and another girl whose name I couldn't remember. Shadric stood several rows behind us with his friends, tall enough to be easily seen.
