CHAPTER 4.1

835 Words
I am standing beneath an oak tree on an isolated side of the clearing. The dress feels itchy on my body, a very clear pointer to the fact that I am not used to nice things. Alpha Curran is standing by my side all decked out in black. Black dress shirt, black pants, black shoes and dark green eyes staring daggers into the truck of the tree. Right in front of us, an old woman who looks like she shouldn’t be able to stand kneels in front of what seems like a pile of bones. She's bent with age, and her hair is straight and white, and it falls down her back in rivulets. She turns to me and I suppress my shudder. Her eyes are white. I mean, like the entire ball is white, and it is unsettling. Mira called her The Bone Keeper on our way here. When Mira had told me that the dress was for my wedding, I had fallen and laughed for like five minutes, and then when she didn’t join me in my bouts of laughter, I realized that things may be real. “What do you mean my wedding?” I asked Mina. “Well, get up so I can fit you into this dress and then I’ll tell you all about it.” It sounded like a request, but I imagined Raze forcing up still as Mira pulled the dress over me and got my ass up. “Alpha Curran is a male with a lot of responsibilities, and he needs a female companion with him to make his life easier. When your pack gave you up, he decided to rescue you, and the only way for him to be able to protect you from them if they ever get it in their head to want you back, you being his Luna will be a very strong deterrent. That is if they are stupid enough to challenge us in the first place.” “But that makes no sense. And how can I be his Luna? I have no wolf. I think that alone undersells me for the position.” “The Alpha is ever wise in his decisions, and unless you want to go back to that pack, I suggest you comply.” “So, my option is between going back to a pack of wolves who hate me, or being strong armed into mating the most feared Alpha, huh?” Mira said nothing. She finished zipping the back of the gown and then pulled my hair to the back. A dryer came out, and she dried it till it fell in a full mass down my back. I looked into the mirror and was met with a strange sight. I looked... decent. I was too thin and gaunt looking to say I looked good, but I didn’t look dirty and grimy, which was my look in Dark Moon pack. The gown didn’t fit me perfectly, but it would do. “Your choice is to take this chance of a new life that fell into your lap and do something with it. Raze told me what Alpha did. He took you away from a pack who considered you worthless. But look around you; do we look like we would ever desert you that way? And you may be thinking, ‘oh, I know nothing about you guys’, which will be true, but listen to your heart. A girl will come to pick you up in ten minutes. Put those shoes on and be ready.” And with that she walked out of the tent. I saw the white shoes on the table, put them on, and sat down thinking. Getting married to Alpha Curran Sharpblade. Me. It was so stupid to think, yet it was true. I was all here dressed up in the night so I could marry the man who saved me from my previous pack. What type of wolf was he? Was he as evil as the stories said? Though I had started to doubt them because nothing from what I had seen today pointed to an evil tyrant terrorizing people all around. I wasn’t even sure I had a choice here, so, whoops. The little girl opened the flap of leather that served as the door to the tent and smiled at me. She was so cute and adorable that I suddenly got an intense wave of baby fever. Whoa. “It’s this way,” she said and then ran out of the tent. And then I had to run after her, and then she brought me here and now, here I am. Standing beside the man who was going to be my husband. Who would have thought, huh? The Bone Keeper was chanting in the old tongue, a language I had heard about but never seen. Dark Moon pack didn’t have a spiritual leader like the Bone Keeper, and maybe it has something to do with how evil they are ha-ha.
