“What the hell were you thinking?!”
That is Raze screaming at Curran while I sit on the bed with his head in my lap. Apparently, whenever the shadow beast emerges and Curran tries to wrestle it for control, the marks of their mental battle appear on his body.
Which is why I have an injured Curran lying on my lap while his Beta chews him out. Can't say I’m complaining. I really want to chew him out, too. I can’t believe he risked himself in that way just to stare at me with goggly eyes because some strange mark appeared on my wrist.
Marks that disappeared when I woke up this morning. Well, I have better things to preoccupy my mind with and I focus on them. For example, the claw marks on Curran’s back. Raze's rant is starting to piss me off too. I need him out so I can treat my mate.
“Get out, Raze. Come shout at him later,” the words are out of my mouth before I can even think about them, and I wait for regret or anxiety to consume me for my speaking out of turn, but the only thing I’m concerned with right now is treating my mate. I don’t care if he’s a supernatural creature whose wounds will heal by themselves. I just need to make sure he’s fine.
I notice the room is silent, and I look up to find Curran and Raze both staring at me. One with a smile that threatens to sweep me away, and one with surprise slacking his face, as if he can’t quite believe I said those words to him.
“What did you just say to me?” Raze says, and Curran growls, a sound I’m sure will send shivers down the sign of any lesser wolf. But not me. Because I’m his mate. Huh, when did I start to think this way?
“She said to get out. Listen to her.”
Raze must have heard the tense note in Curran’s voice. He bows to Curran.
“I meant no disrespect, Alpha.”
“Just get out.”
He exits the room without another word, and I can’t help the smile that climbs my face. Curran defended me. I remove his head from my lap carefully and climb down the bed. I already asked Mira to bring me a bowl of clean water, some rubbing alcohol, and a sheet of bandages.
“Now that Raze is out, why did we chase him out?”
I laugh. “So that I can clean your wounds without him chewing your ears off. He has a loud voice and has no concept of self-regulating it.”
“And you’re cleaning my wounds why?”
“Because I’m partially to blame for you getting them. I had no idea surfacing when the shadow beast was out was a literal fight for you.”
“I wouldn’t change it for anything. Seeing that mark on your wrist, it spurred something inside me. I had to come out. Besides, this is the first time that I am awake this early. I blame you for nothing, Violet.”
