“Hi,”
“Hey there little one. What's your name?”
“My name is Lily. Mama says you are our new Luna.”
So cute, but this felt like an ambush. “I mated the Alpha yesterday, so I think you mama is right.”
A frown decorates her face, and she looks so adorable as I watch little thoughts play around in her head. “You’re not sure if you’re Luna? But you mated Alpha.”
“I know Lily. Say what? I’m your new Luna until the Alpha says otherwise. What do you think?”
She thinks about it for a minute and takes my hand in hers. “Come with me then, Luna.”
I am very aware that I do not have a choice in the matter, so I let myself be pulled along. The wary faces around me begin to tone down the mean. I think it may have something to do with the child dragging me around. If I was entertaining the whimsy of a kid, I certainly couldn’t be the evil b***h from the east end, right?
Kids really are our unifiers.
Lily pulls me to a woman standing and looking panicked. When her eyes catch Lily, she runs towards us and scoops her into a hug.
“Oh goddess, Lily! I told you to stop running around where I can’t see you. Mommy was worried sick.”
“I’m sorry, mama. I brought the Luna.”
The female wolf turns suspicious eyes to me and takes in my measure. I guess she’s thinking I have deceived her daughter. After all, this scrawny thing could definitely not be her new Luna.
She's very pretty in a conventional way. Her hair is a fiery red carried in a haphazard shoulder length cut. She has green eyes and her face is decorated with freckles. I see where Lily got them from.
“Greetings, Luna,” she says and tilts her head down.
“No, please. Call me Violet. Your pup is adorable.”
“I am Martha. And I will find her behavior adorable in a few more years, but right now, every disappearance drives me crazy.”
I laugh, and my stomach growls again.
“Oh my. Please come eat with us.”
I immediately panic. “I do not want to intrude.”
“Nonsense. Lily and I will love the company.”
My stomach cramps again, and I shut up and follow her. She leads us to a little mat that has a basket and plates sitting on it.
Martha sits Lily down and sits herself.
“Come on. Take a seat. I promise to leave my grilling for the next time we see.” She says, and I laugh. But Martha keeps her word. She dishes me a plate of diced beef, some rice and a gravy that smells heavily.
I eat
Slowly so I can savor the flavors. Whoever made this meal is a mean cook, and I say as much out loud.
“Well thank you. Hey! Lily come back here!” I turn to see Lily running away with a giggle.
“Please, I hope to see you around Luna.” Martha says, and then she runs after her pup. I stand with a smile and begin the walk back to my cabin. Or rather, Curran’s cabin.
I'm close to the house when I hear it. Raze's voice. “... She has o fire. He burned three years on a dead end, and now he’s tied to dead weight. All he has to do is say the word, and I’ll...”
Arms pull me away and the last words of that conversation are lost to me. But chills climb down my spine. There is only one single act of tying that happened yesterday. Was Raze talking about me? What fire?
I trace the hand holding me to a face and see Mira frowning at me.
“What was that about, Mira? Why did Raze mean? Why did you pull me away?”
“Alpha asked for you. And it is not my place to say. All will be revealed in time.”
