Ray knew how Jake would react to the news that Vanessa was in town, and he didn’t delay in calling him.
Jake answered his phone on the second ring.
“Hello son, I have some news about your mother.”
“What’s going on?”
Ray could hear the hesitancy in Jake’s voice. “She was at my house today when I got home.”
“What? Why is she in town? Oh, no, do you think she knows where we live?”
Ray knew his first thought would be to keep Vanessa away from Sara. “You know it’s only a matter of time before she tracks you and Sara down. You don’t have a choice. You have to tell her before Vanessa finds her.”
His breath caught as he exhaled. “You’re right. I never expected to see her again. I’ll talk to you in the morning. G’night Dad.”
Exhausted, Ray flopped in his recliner and propped his feet up.
