Episode 4: No Way Back

1352 Words
The sky wasn’t supposed to look like that. Aria stared up, her chest tightening as the bright afternoon slowly dimmed into something darker… heavier. Like night was forcing its way into the day. “What is happening now…” she whispered. Around them, students had already started running again—panicking, confused, screaming as the air shifted unnaturally. But this time, it wasn’t just fear. It was pressure. Even the ground felt like it was holding its breath. Kael’s grip on her wrist tightened. “We have to go. Now.” Aria pulled back slightly. “Go where?! You still haven’t explained anything!” “There’s no time,” he snapped. That made her pause. Because this was the first time his voice had risen. First time he sounded… genuinely worried. Aria swallowed hard. “Kael—” A loud crack cut through the sky. Not thunder. Something else. Both of them looked up at the same time. The air above them split. Not fully—but enough to reveal something behind it. Darkness. Deeper than anything Aria had ever seen. And then— A shape moved inside it. Slow. Massive. Watching. Aria’s stomach dropped instantly. “That’s not like the other one…” she said, her voice barely there. Kael didn’t respond right away. His eyes were locked on the sky, his expression colder than ever. “No,” he said finally. “It’s not.” The ground trembled slightly beneath their feet. Students screamed louder, scattering toward exits, some falling, some crying. Everything was chaos now. But Kael stayed still. Too still. Aria looked at him. “What is it?” she asked. His jaw tightened. “That’s not a scout,” he said. Aria frowned. “A what?” Before he could answer— The sky tore open. Fully this time. A deep, violent rip across reality itself. Dark energy poured out like smoke. And then it stepped through. This one wasn’t a shadow. It had form. Tall. Solid. Wrong. Its body looked almost human—but twisted, like something had tried to copy a person and failed. Its eyes landed directly on Aria. And this time— There was no doubt. It knew exactly who she was. Aria felt it immediately. That same pull. That same connection. But stronger. Much stronger. Her chest tightened painfully. “It’s… looking at me again…” she whispered. Kael moved in front of her instantly. “Stay behind me.” “No,” she said, grabbing his arm. “I need answers! What are these things?! Why are they coming after me?!” Kael turned to her. His eyes sharp. “You want the truth?” he said. “Yes!” He held her gaze. Then— “They were sent to bring you back.” Aria blinked. “…Back?” Her mind struggled to catch up. “Back where?” Kael didn’t answer. Because the creature moved. Fast. Faster than the last one. It hit the ground with a force that cracked the tiles beneath it. The impact sent a wave of energy through the courtyard. Aria stumbled. Kael steadied her quickly. “Listen to me,” he said urgently. “If you stay here, you will die. And if you don’t—” He stopped. Aria frowned. “If I don’t what?” His voice dropped. “They’ll take you.” Silence. That scared her more than anything else. “…Take me where?” she whispered. Kael’s grip tightened. “A place you won’t come back from.” The creature let out a low, distorted sound. Not a scream. Not a growl. Something worse. Something that didn’t belong in this world. Aria felt her chest tighten again. That energy. It was reacting. The same way it did before. Kael noticed immediately. “No,” he said sharply. “Don’t let it out again.” “I’m not trying to!” she snapped. “I don’t even know how I did it!” The creature took a step forward. Then another. Each step made the air heavier. Like gravity itself was increasing. Aria struggled to breathe. Kael exhaled slowly. Then made a decision. “Fine,” he said. Aria looked at him. “Fine what—?” Before she could finish— He pulled her closer. One hand moved to the back of her neck. The other held her arm firmly. “Don’t fight me,” he said quietly. “What are you—” The world shifted. Again. But this time— It wasn’t her power. It was his. The courtyard disappeared. The noise. The people. Everything. It all blurred into darkness. Aria gasped. “What is happening?!” she shouted. “Moving you,” Kael said. The darkness around them twisted. Faster. Stronger. Until suddenly— They stopped. Aria stumbled forward slightly. Her eyes widened. They weren’t at the school anymore. Not even close. The air was colder. The sky darker. The ground beneath her feet wasn’t tiled—it was stone. Old. Cracked. Ancient. She turned slowly. Nothing looked familiar. Tall structures stood in the distance—half broken, half standing. The entire place felt… abandoned. But not empty. Never empty. “Where are we…” she whispered. Kael stepped beside her. His voice was calm again—but something about it felt heavier now. “Somewhere they won’t find you easily,” he said. Aria turned to him sharply. “You keep saying ‘they’! Who are they?! What do they want from me?!” Kael didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he looked at her. Really looked at her. Like he was seeing her clearly for the first time. Then he said something that made her chest tighten again: “You.” Aria froze. “What?” “They want you,” he repeated. “Why?!” Kael’s expression darkened. “Because of what you are.” Her breathing slowed. “What I am…” she repeated softly. Kael stepped closer. Close enough that she could see every detail in his eyes. “Aria…” he said quietly. Then— “You’re not just powerful.” A pause. Then the truth started to break through. “You’re dangerous.” Silence. Aria’s heart pounded again. “…To who?” she asked. Kael didn’t look away. “To everyone.” Her stomach dropped. “That’s not possible,” she said quickly. “I would never hurt anyone!” Kael’s gaze didn’t soften. “That’s not your choice.” Those words hit harder than anything else. Aria stepped back slowly. “No… no, that’s not true…” But deep inside— Something reacted. Like it knew. Like it had always known. The air around her shifted slightly again. That same energy flickered under her skin. Kael noticed instantly. And this time— He didn’t look surprised. He looked… prepared. “This is why I was sent to find you,” he said. Aria looked up at him. Her voice barely above a whisper. “Sent… by who?” Kael hesitated. Then— “The ones trying to stop what you’ll become.” Silence fell between them again. Heavy. Unavoidable. Aria’s world felt like it was breaking apart piece by piece. Nothing made sense anymore. Nothing felt safe. Not even herself. “…And what if I don’t want this?” she asked quietly. Kael’s answer came without hesitation. “You don’t get to choose.” The wind picked up suddenly, rushing through the broken structures around them. Aria wrapped her arms around herself slightly. Not from the cold. But from the fear creeping in. Then she looked back at him. One last question. “…And you?” she asked. “What are you, Kael?” For the first time— He didn’t answer. Not with words. Instead— His eyes changed. Just for a second. Dark. Deeper than before. Not human. Not normal. Something else entirely. Aria’s breath caught. Because in that moment— She realized something terrifying. He wasn’t just protecting her. He was part of the same world chasing her. And maybe… Just maybe… He was just as dangerous.
