Wednesday, and a long run in the cool of the early morning and no neighbourly interruptions meant I was at my desk before nine. The feature piece was starting to take shape and I needed to focus. My problem had grown into having to sift through an abundance of research material. It was hard to know what to keep and what to cull. That’s the trouble with a story you have an emotional attachment to; you want to include every little titbit. Indifference, I found, made for a smoother, more straightforward composition. I also felt under pressure to do a good job, not for the magazine but for the Myrtle Bay community, and there would be plenty of critical tongues should I miss something vital, or that someone thought vital.
