Sunshine reflecting on shiny metal dazzled me for much of the journey home. The moment I pulled up in my driveway, I was out of my car and racing down the side of my house and on through the side gate. ‘Doris,’ I called, going straight to her backdoor. ‘What is it?’ I was momentarily disoriented by the sound of her voice outside. I left her back porch and found her reclining on a sun lounger on the lawn beside her pond. The rock sculpture looked splendid in the sunshine, and I saw that she’d been hard at work planting sedges to finish off the look. She appeared so relaxed and contented I almost didn’t want to tell her my news.
