Chapter 5

Aurora had no idea what it means when the moonstone refused to glow, but when she turned to look at Lila, she saw that her face had changed too. There was worry in her eyes. Emilia’s stomach dropped further. “Now” a voice called out, drawing attention away from her. “find your mates.” The atmosphere shifted instantly, excitement surged back into the crowd. Each new wolf was handed a single flower. “A guide” Lila whispered. “Your instincts will lead you.” she said, her excitement down a bit. Aurora stared at the flower placed in her hand. Her fingers tightened around the stem and her heart raced again. This seemed like another chance, to find out if she truly belong. If she really finds her mate tonight, then it would convince everyone and even herself that she’s indeed a werewolf. She followed everyone else. People passed her, some stopping and some smiling. There were squeaks as few found their mates, and cries as some seemed to be rejected. The others hung their heads down as they couldn’t find their mates. Emilia’s breath grew uneven. She continued to follow the scent that somehow attract her. Her gaze lifted and landed on him. He stood a few steps away, looking tall and yummy. The blazer suit well-tailored, fitted his slender feature, his hair fell slightly over his forehead. ‘Better than the last’ she muttered under her breath. When his eyes locked onto hers, it turned stone-cold instantly, like he had seen something forbidden, something eerie. His face twisted in irritation quickly. Emilia’s lips parted slightly, a small, hopeful smile formed, she stepped closer. “It seems…” she said softly, her voice carrying a nervous warmth, “we’re mates.” She extended the flower toward him. For a second, he stared at the flower, then back to her. Then a snort, his gaze beholding her like some dirt in his shoes. Emilia’s smile faltered, confusion flickered across her face. She swallowed, withdrawing the flower in her hand. “How could you” he said, his tone laced with mockery, “a wolf lower than an omega, dare to offer me a flower?” The words hit hard. Aurora blinked. “…What?” she whispered, not understanding. Before she could react, he grabbed the flower from her hand and dropped it right at her feet. Then crushed it beneath his shoes. The soft petals flattened against the ground, ruined. In that moment, everyone turned to them, watching keenly. There were snickers this time. Aurora clenched onto her dress, her chest tightened painfully as heat rushed to her face. She had been humiliated as a human, and even now, as a werewolf, she was still crushed. Tears welled up in her eyes and she bit her lips to stop it from falling, wishing the ground would open up and swallow her whole. She decided to pivot and took to her heels instead. She almost stumbling as she pushed through the crowd, her vision blurred with tears. When her shoes tripped her, she stopped to remove them and ran again, fast out of there. -- Cole Hawthorne stood still, his fingers tightened slightly around the flower in his hand as his gaze followed Emilia’s retreating figure. Her scent lingered, feeling all his senses like an intoxicating drug. He’s an athlete and he knows how dangerous drugs could be. His eyes shifted to the boy who had humiliated her and his jaw clenched. A dark look crossed his face, something deep within him stirred, his wolf shifting restlessly, low and displeased. A quiet, warning growl echoed in his chest -- From a distance, another one stood at the entrance, missing the chance to go after her. His expression darkened and he let out hard breathes. His wolf growled in him, wanting him to chase after her. But he didn’t. “We have plenty of time to meet” he told it. He smiled holding the flower up and took a long inhale, his lips curve easily, a quiet brightness in his eyes. -- From the top of the building, a figure jumped down like it was nothing. His red eyes flashed to the direction of the penetrable scent that suddenly intrude his peace. His claws sprang out and he took a long sniff of the lingered scent, a creepy smile played at his lips. Without waiting, he flew back up. -- Aurora didn’t stop running until she reached the faculty building. She held her dress up with one hand, and her shoes in the other hand. Her heart races as she searched the number and names on the door, trying to figure which one her Mum was occupying. Finally, she saw Jack Beaumont. Without waiting to be sure if it was the same person, she pushed the door open and walked in, her eyes searching frantically. Aurora found Mona, packing her bag already. She seemed ready to leave. Her breath caught in her throat and she slowly called her name. “Mum” her voice already cracked. Mona turned, surprised to see her. Aurora rushed forward into her arms. She immediately embrace her back, warming her up. She gave her a kiss in her hair. “Mum, please don’t go!” she cried, her voice breaking as tears spilled freely down her cheeks. Mona’s eyes widened in fright, hearing her cry so hard. She pulled her back, staring into her eyes and wipe her tears with her hand. “What’s wrong? What happened?” she rushed. Aurora shook her head frantically. “Please don’t leave me here,” she begged again grabbing her hands. “I don’t want to stay here alone… I don’t belong here!” Her voice cracked completely now. “They hate me… I don’t understand anything… I…I tried but I can’t…” She broke off, choking on her own words. Her hands trembled as she clung to Mona like she might disappear if she let go. Mona looked at her, tears fell down her cheeks. Her eyes and heart were heavy with grief. She hugged Aurora again, tighter. “I’m sorry, honey” she let out. “I’m so sorry” she said again, her voice filled with regret, pain. Aurora pulled away hearing her response, her eyes held Mona’s desperately and pleading “Please don’t abandon me like Dad did, you promised” she cried, shaking her head vigorously. Mona’s expression shattered. “I’ll be good,” Aurora rushed on, tears falling uncontrollably. “I promise I will be your good like girl. I won’t cause trouble, I won’t fight, I will do whatever you want” Her grip tightened on Mona “Just… please don’t leave me here.” Her voice dropped into a broken whisper. “I’m scared, Mum…” She collapsed into Mona’s arms, sobbing against her shoulder. Mona stroke her hair, her own tears matches with her and they both held onto too tightly. “I really am sorry” Mona pressed her lips hard, her eyes moved slowly to the blood-stained handkerchief beside the bed rest and her heart fell in great anguish.
